From MHz to mmWaves: a review of application-driven UK-based wireless power research
The deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT) has driven research in sustainable battery alternatives, including energy harvesting and wireless power solutions [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Wireless power transfer (WPT) and harvesting, ranging from near-field to short-range and km-range far-field solutions, have been extensively studied, with applications ranging from biomedical systems to pervasive ambient environmental monitoring.
In this article, we review the recent contributions over the last decade, with a focus on R&D activities carried out in the United Kingdom. Key contributions in the field of WPT were demonstrated by U.K.-based teams, including the first large-scale ambient power surveys, through high-sensitivity and -efficiency millimeter-wave (mmWave) and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) rectennas to near-field high-power systems and power electronics and applications in soft, wearable, and flexible electronics. Future research directions and challenges are also identified by a diverse range of active WPT research groups
‘Why is the chubby guy running?’: Trans pregnancy, fatness and cultural intelligibility
Since the late 2000s trans pregnancy has received increasing public and academic attention, and stories of the ‘pregnant man’ have become a media staple. Existing research has critiqued such spectacularization and the supposed tension between maleness, masculinity, and pregnancy that underpins it. Extending that work, this article draws on interview data from an international study of trans reproductive practices and analyzes participants' experiences of being, and expecting themselves to be, perceived in public space not as spectacularly ‘pregnant men’, but as fat men. As a starting point we take the experience of one participant whose heavily pregnant participation in a five-kilometer race prompted the question: ‘Why is the chubby guy running?’ Using Judith Butler's concept of the cultural intelligibility of gender, we ask why the question asked was not: ‘Why is the pregnant guy running?’ We further consider the degree to which pregnant trans people manage their unintelligibility within the matrix of pregnancy, fatness, and trans/gender and how this reveals the limits of gender intelligibility itself
Acoustic and aerodynamic evaluation of DLR small-scale rotor configurations within GARTEUR AG26
This paper presents the activities performed in the GARTEUR Action Group HC/AG-26 to study the acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics of small rotor configurations, including the influence of the rotor-rotor interactions. This paper will focus on comparisons between numerical activities and wind tunnel results on a small rotor provided by DLR. The wind tunnel models included a Rotor/Rotor/Pylon in isolated, tandem and coaxial configuration. The wind tunnel experiments for acoustics were performed in DLR’s Acoustic Wind Tunnel Braunschweig (AWB) and PIV test were performed in CIRA within a joint CIRA/DLR test program. For simulations, the numerical approaches from each partner are applied. The aerodynamic simulations necessary for the aeroacoustic predictions are conducted with various fidelity numerical methods, varying from lifting line to CFD. The acoustic values on the microphone positions are evaluated using Ffowcs Williams/Hawking (FW-H) formulation by all partners. The acoustic and aerodynamic predictions are compared to test data, including performance, PIV and acoustic directivity
COVID-19, board of directors and pessimism in annual reports: an intention to mitigate litigation risk
This study examines the impact of corporate COVID-19 disclosure on the negative tone (pessimism) in annual reports. We also investigate how board size and board independence influence pessimism in annual reports. Using a U.K. sample from 2020, we employ various techniques to explore the COVID-19 disclosure-pessimism nexus. Our findings, supported by Tobit regression and a two-stage least squares (2SLS) model, reveal a positive association between COVID-19 disclosure and pessimism in annual reports. We observe that managers tend to disclose COVID-19 information pessimistically as a risk mitigation strategy, aiming to prevent future earning shocks and potential litigation costs. Interestingly, our results also indicate that large boards and independent directors can bolster governance power, safeguarding firms against potential litigation costs by increasing pessimism in annual reports, both during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic

Evaluation globale standardisée systématique des rhumatismes inflammatoires chroniques: intérêts et limites
Introduction: National and international recommendations call for an annual standardized systematic holistic review in the management of chronic inflammatory rheumatism (CIR). This includes an assessment of disease activity and severity, as well as patient education on the disease, knowledge of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, adherence to treatment and screening for comorbidities. Our study aims to recall the definition of a holistic review (HR), to present the evidence of their effectiveness and to give an overview of HR practices in France.
Methods: A literature review was conducted in the Pubmed database to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or meta-analyses reporting the efficacy of a multidisciplinary intervention in ICR or other chronic diseases. Two online surveys were sent to all rheumatology departments in France and to a sample of independent rheumatologists, with 34 and 19 questions respectively. These questionnaires were used to determine the profile of the responding center/rheumatologist, the existence of an HR and the obstacles or facilitators to its implementation.
Results: Literature search yielded 872 articles, 24 of which were finally included: 16 RCTs and 8 meta-analyses. Only 3 articles concerned ICRs, including one meta-analysis of 10 RCTs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Of these 3 studies, 2 RCTs in systemic lupus and systemic sclerosis showed a favorable impact of a multidisciplinary approach on SLEDAI and grip strength and mouth opening respectively, while the meta-analysis in RA showed no benefit on disability or disease activity.The questionnaire was answered by 72 centers and 186 rheumatologists. A third of the centers had already implemented a HR during an day hospitalization. 70 % of centers estimated that they managed more than 10 patients per month, devoting an average of 35 minutes of rheumatologist time and 90 minutes of cumulative time for all other healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the program. Most of the HCPs involved were nurses (92 %), dieticians (56 %) and physiotherapists (56 %). The main obstacles to setting up a HR were the lack of paramedical resources, lack of economic value and lack of support from treating rheumatologists, while patient motivation was seen as a facilitating factor.
Conclusion: Although HR is recommended, there is little evidence of its effectiveness in ICR. Only 36 % of responding centers have implemented such a program. This survey helps to identify the obstacles and facilitators, and to find solutions for extending this practice
On the intellectual vice of epistemic apathy
Our aim in this paper is to characterize epistemic apathy as an intellectual vice. The agent who possesses this character trait is led not to intervene to prevent another epistemic agent from forming a false belief when it would be appropriate to intervene. Following the motivational viewpoint on vice, we conclude that epistemic apathy can be cashed out in terms of imperfect epistemic motivations. The apathetic agent possesses bad (or, at least, lacks good) epistemic motives. We show, however, that motivationalism has difficulties accounting for the excess-vice: epistemic paternalism. Following the obstructivism understanding of intellectual vice, we highlight the fact that epistemic apathy does not get in the way of knowledge for the agent who possesses this trait. This goes against our intuition that epistemic apathy is an intellectual vice. To remedy this, we argue that epistemic vices do not necessarily harm the vicious agent
“Your U-Well-Being Journal is due today”: on some possible intersections between surveillance and student wellbeing in the future university
This paper uses Participatory Speculative Fiction to explore the convergence of two important dynamics that are currently at play within the Higher Education sectors in the UK, North America and elsewhere: digital surveillance capacities and student wellbeing. We use short stories that were contributed and published anonymously through the Telling Data Stories website to show how their authors spontaneously connected surveillance capacities and potentials with contemporary concerns about student wellbeing. In the fictions they created, our contributors imagine how current and proximal future technologies might be enrolled in increasingly intrusive and interventionist neuro-psycho-bio-surveillance employed at all stages of the student journey. The stories problematise the relationship between visibility and wellbeing, expose complex assemblages of people, technologies and discourses and suggest possible outcomes ranging from embrace and perhaps enculturation to subversion and even inversion of power. We suggest that these possible futures are important signals of the need for wise decisions in the present
Investigation of attitude control actuators for large flexible space structures using inverse simulation
This paper proposes a modular mathematical model and Inverse Simulation methods to investigate a variety of attitude control actuators for Large Space Structures. The modular model is developed to allow for different actuator types to be easily implemented and combined, facilitating investigations into a variety of actuator configurations. The generic Inverse Simulation method allows for the inverse dynamic solution to be found for any configuration of actuators without any modifications to the solution process, facilitating rapid experimentation. Reaction wheels, magnetorquers, and solar pressure torque actuators are all considered with mass scaling laws ensuring that each actuator type is compared realistically. The investigations consider the limitations of each actuator type and the deformations experienced by the structure during a large slew manoeuvre. It is found that the distribution of smaller torques across the Large Space Structure reduces deformation and combinations of different actuator types, instead of a single type of actuator, allow for a good compromise between mass, power and structural deformation
