Since the early 2000s, the video game industry has surpassed traditional sectors such as film and music in terms of revenue, establishing itself as one of the leading forms of digital entertainment. According to the White Paper on Spanish Video Game Development 2024, the industry had a turnover of 1,425 million euros and 177.900 millions dollars in 2023, consolidating itself as a growing sector despite current challenges. However, accessibility in this field remains largely underexplored, which prevents individuals with various disabilities (visual, cognitive, auditory, etc.) from enjoying video games on equal terms. Accessibility, in general terms, refers to the characteristic of a product, service, or environment that allows any person to interact with it easily, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. This project aims to design and develop a turn-based strategy video game that is accessible from its inception to people with total visual impairment. To achieve this, technologies such as screen readers and audio description systems have been integrated to enable interaction, while also ensuring that players without visual disabilities can enjoy the game as well. The game belongs to the roguelike subgenre, off ering procedurally generated combat scenarios that vary with each session. It draws inspiration from titles such as Hades and In Stars and Time. The open-source Godot engine was used for development, as it provides native support for assistive technologies. C# was chosen as the primary programming language for implementation.

This doctoral thesis is the first modern critical edition with Spanish translation and commentary of the four alchemical poems attributed to Heliodorus, Theophrastus, Hierotheus and Archelaus. Until now, only two editions of the poems have been available: the 19th-century editions by Fabricius (Heliodorus) and Ideler (Theophrastus, Hierotheus and Archelaus) and the 1923 edition by Goldschmidt, which is based mainly on the Casselanus chem. 2° 1 (= Ca). There is also an early study with an English translation of the poems of Theophrastus and Archelaus by Browne, but there has been no translation or commentary of the four poems altogether. This thesis pursues three objectives: to update Goldschmidt᾿s critical edition, to translate the poems into Spanish and to comment their content, contextualising them within Greekal chemical literature. It also includes an introduction addressing the issues of dating, authorship, poetic meter, the alchemical theory and practice of the poems, the comparison between them, and indexes of illustrations, quoted passages, and contents...Fac. de FilologíaTRUEunpu

Gabriel Rabanal-Rodríguez is recipient of a researcher training scholarship from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Banco Santander (CT25/24).Objective : To evaluate the neurophysiological effects associated with dry needling. This review evaluates the influence of dry needling on pain-related biomarkers, conditioned pain modulation, and temporal summation to clarify the potential mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects. Data Sources : A literature search across the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases until October 2024 was conducted. Study Selection : Studies were included if they assessed the neurophysiological effects of dry needling in animal or human models. Fourteen results were included in the qualitative synthesis (n=4 in animals, n=10 in humans) and 4 in the quantitative analysis. Selection was performed independently by two reviewers. Data Extraction : Data were extracted independently by two reviewers using a standardized form. Neurophysiological outcomes included levels of biomarkers (e.g., substance P, cortisol, interleukins, CGRP, serotonin, TNF-α), as well as measures of conditioned pain modulation and temporal summation. The methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro, Cochrane Risk of Bias-2 and Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions scales. Data Synthesis : Dry needling showed increases in miR-939, miR-25, β-endorphin, IL-2, TNF-α, iNOS, HIF-1α, COX-2, VEGF, inflammatory cells, IL-6, and AChE, while decreases were observed in MYOZ2, SP, CGRP, ACh, and AChR. The effects on neurophysiological variables related to pain processing are limited, leading to small improvements in conditioned pain modulation (SMD 0.36, 95% 0.05 to 0.67) and no apparent changes in temporal summation (SMD -0.08, 95%CI -0.44 to 0.27). Conclusion : The application of dry needling can induce significant changes in pain-related biomarker levels in animal and human studies, providing insights into its underlying mechanisms of action and potential clinical effects.Depto. de FisioterapiaFac. de Enfermería, Fisioterapia y PodologíaTRUEpu

Expansive clays in tunnels: potential of Raman spectroscopy

    No full text
These volume changes can cause structural deformations which, if not properly considered during design, may lead to serious geotechnical issues. This project, developed as part of a master’s Thesis in Geological Engineering, evaluates the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a tool for the identification of expansive clays, with the aim of exploring more efficient and faster alternatives to conventional mineralogical characterization methods. Through the analysis of four clay-rich samples (MA, AT3, LMI, and MC5), the study confirmed that Raman spectroscopy is effective in identifying non-expansive crystalline phases, such as quartz and carbonates. However, its application to clay minerals proved more challenging, primarily due to high fluorescence and low signal intensity, especially in complex mixtures or samples containing organic matter. While X-ray diffraction (XRD) remains the standard technique for identifying expansive clays, Raman spectroscopy shows promising potential for rapid, in-situ analyses without the need for sample preparation, an advantage particularly relevant in tunnels construction. With continued advancements in instrumentation and the development of more comprehensive spectral databases for clay minerals, Raman spectroscopy could become a valuable complementary tool in geotechnical engineering.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEsubmitte

Shape matters: inferring the motility of confluent cells from static images

    No full text
OCENW.GROOT.2019.022 2022-T1/TIC-24007Cell motility in dense cell collectives is pivotal in various diseases like cancer metastasis and asthma. A central aspect in these phenomena is the heterogeneity in cell motility, but identifying the motility of individual cells is challenging. Previous work has established the importance of the average cell shape in predicting cell dynamics. Here, we aim to identify the importance of individual cell shape features, rather than collective features, to distinguish between high-motility and low-motility (or zero-motility) cells in heterogeneous cell layers. Employing the cellular Potts model, we generate simulation snapshots and extract static features as inputs for a simple machine-learning model. Our results show that when cells are either motile or non-motile, this machine-learning model can accurately predict a cell's phenotype using only single-cell shape features. Furthermore, we explore scenarios where both cell types exhibit some degree of motility, characterized by high or low motility. In such cases, our findings indicate that a neural network trained on shape features can accurately classify cell motility, particularly when the number of highly motile cells is low, and high-motility cells are significantly more motile compared to low-motility cells. This work offers potential for physics-inspired predictions of single-cell properties with implications for inferring cell dynamics from static histological images.Dutch Research Council (NWO)Comunidad de MadridUniversidad Complutense de MadridDepto. de Física TeóricaFac. de Ciencias FísicasTRUEpu
