Cabeço de Vide Ophiolite: structure, age and correlation of an obducted marginal basin on the northern margin of Gondwana
The Cabeço de Vide Ophiolite (SW Iberian Massif) offers new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North Africa Gondwana margin. This study presents petrological, structural, and geochronological evidence to reconstruct the Cadomian tectonic evolution of the Cabeço de Vide Ophiolite and discusses possible correlations. The Cabeço de Vide Massif experienced two Cadomian deformation phases (DC1 and DC2). Besteiros thrust (Besteiros Shear Zone) is attributed to DC1, which obducted the Cabeço de Vide Ophiolite onto the Ediacaran series deposited along the Gondwana margin (top-to-E-NE emplacement). DC2 produced a normal-sense ductile shear zone with top-to-the-SE kinematics (Cabeço de Vide Shear Zone). A cross-sectional data analysis combining geochronological evidence with U-Pb dating in calcite (marbles) and zircon (amphibolites, metagranites and metaconglomerates) constrains the age of DC1 between ca. 623–523 Ma. The same analysis suggests a Cambrian age for DC2, between ca. 523–512 Ma. The sequence, timing and kinematics of the major Cadomian structures in the study area align with those described in other sections of the Cadomian Orogen in Iberia, notably the Calzadilla Ophiolite. We propose a correlation between the Cabeço de Vide and Calzadilla ophiolites, which would emerge as two pieces of a single ophiolitic belt. This ophiolitic belt was probably obducted from a primary fore-arc basin setting inland onto Gondwana during the Cadomian Orogeny. Although individuals with this condition experience various challenges and require support in different areas of life, research on this topic remains limited. Therefore, this article presents a systematic review aimed at describing the cognitive profile of individuals with BIF. The review included studies addressing the intellectual functioning of the BIF population published between 2012 and 2024. The literature search was conducted in the ProQuest, WoS, SCOPUS, and EBSCOhost databases. Finally, a total of 33 articles were included, and their quality was assessed using the SSAHS tool. The results were organised into three categories: general cognitive abilities, executive functions, language cognition, and neurophysiology. The analysis indicates that individuals with BIF exhibit a cognitive profile characterised by deficits in various domains, including executive functions (such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, processing speed, and planning), general cognitive abilities (such as memory, attention, abstract thinking, problem-solving, arithmetic, and concentration), and language-related cognitive skills, both oral and written. Additionally, neuroimaging techniques suggest that BIF is also associated with structural and functional alterations in the brain. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed, as well as the need for future research with larger samples and more comprehensive assessments. The late Ediacaran to early Cambrian subduction-related granitic magmatism of the Pampean orogen: Geochemical and isotopic constraints on hybridization processes
The late Ediacaran to early Cambrian Pampean magmatic arc in Argentina represents an excellent example of subduction-related magmatism and continental crust formation. This study presents new geochemical, isotopic, and geochronological data from the Guasayán intrusive complex, which is a significant body within this magmatic arc. The data are integrated with a comprehensive compilation of published data from the arc elsewhere. The Pampean arc exhibits a wide range of rocks, from metaluminous I-type diorites to strongly peraluminous S-type granites, with the majority displaying hybrid compositions (mostly magnesian, calc-alkalic and slightly peraluminous compositions). Zircon U-Pb geochronology indicates that the Guasayán granitoids were emplaced mainly during a flare-up of arc magmatism between ca. 530 and 535 Ma. However, the presence of zircon antecrysts with ages of ca. 545 Ma in most of the Pampean arc granitoids, suggests that the magmatic system was long-lived, and the early crystallized zircon crystals were recycled into younger magmatic pulses. Geochemical and isotope data (Sr-Nd-Hf) highlight the interaction between mantle-derived magmas and crustal components, with magma mixing identified as the dominant process in the generation of the hybrid granitoids. Local-scale processes such as crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization, and peritectic entrainment also contributed to the geochemical and isotopic diversity. The involvement of the Puncoviscana Series as the crustal component of the mixed magmas is evidenced by zircon inheritance patterns and isotopic signatures. Time response of an undoped LaCl3 crystal

CIPROM/2021/064We have characterized a detector equipped with an undoped LaCl truncated cone crystal with dimensions of 22.5 mm in the largest diameter, 16 mm in the smallest diameter, and 16 mm in height, coupled to a fast Photonis XP2020/URQ photomultiplier tube (PMT). Its time response at 511 keV (22Na) and 60Co photon energies has been measured against a reference detector using a fast digitizer module by digital signal processing methods based on a genetic algorithm. The time resolution was optimized by the choice of the photomultiplier bias voltage and the fine-tuning of the digital parameters of the time pickup algorithm. We examined the growth, ochratoxin A (OTA) production, and osmoadaptive responses of two common ham-colonising fungi, Penicillium nordicum and Aspergillus westerdijkiae, under four culture conditions: control (no added salt), 100 g/L NaCl, 100 g/L KCl, and 50 g/L each of NaCl + KCl. Media were based on lyophilized dry-cured ham, and strains were incubated at 25 degrees C for 12 days. High adaptation to salt-rich conditions was demonstrated by the faster development of both moulds in salt-supplemented media, with A. westerdijkiae exhibiting overall higher growth and OTA production. The unsupplemented control medium produced the greatest OTA levels, indicating that mild osmotic stress may maximise toxin synthesis. Intracellular glycerol assays revealed HOG-pathway activation in A. westerdijkiae under salt stress, whereas P. nordicum showed reduced glycerol accumulation, implying alternative adaptation routes. Free-chlorine release occurred via OTA and free chlorine in both species, though no direct correlation with OTA levels was found. Total NaCl replacement by KCl did not significantly alter OTA synthesis, suggesting feasibility for sodium reduction in dry-cured ham. However, partial NaCl substitution may risk elevated OTA production by A. westerdijkiae. Brucellosis in aquatic mammals
The study of brucellosis in marine mammals has become crucial due to its zoonotic risks and its effects on marine species. The bacteria Brucella ceti and Brucella pinnipedialis cause significant health issues in cetaceans and pinnipeds, respectively. While B. ceti is associated with severe conditions and strandings, B. pinnipedialis often remains asymptomatic, though some cases of disease have been noted. The zoonotic potential of marine Brucella strains, particularly sequence type 27, further emphasizes the need for continuous surveillance and research. While real-time PCR is useful for detecting Brucella DNA, it faces limitations, making it unsuitable for direct application to these samples. Bacterial culture remains the gold standard for diagnosing brucellosis, and molecular techniques should be applied to these cultures to ensure accurate strain identification. Cambrian initiation of the Saxothuringian Ocean: new insights from the Kaczawa Complex, West Sudetes, Poland
The Saxothuringian Ocean originated in the Early Palaeozoic from the fragmentation of northern Gondwana. In the Kaczawa basin, a part of the Saxothuringian Ocean, sedimentary-volcanogenic deposition began during the early Cambrian. The clastic material, predominantly composed of Neoproterozoic (c. 75 %) detrital zircons, originated from source areas dominated by 0.64–0.60 Ga and 0.58–0.54 Ga-aged felsic rocks, formed within a continental magmatic arc along the Gondwanan margin. This Ediacaran magmatism facilitated the recycling of older Gondwanan crust, which incorporated Cryogenian (0.75–0.73 Ga), Tonian-Stenian (1.2–0.9 Ga), Paleoproterozoic (2.2–1.8 Ga), and Archean (3.4–2.4 Ga) components. These inputs are reflected in εHf(t) values (–35.0 to +12.8) and TDM(Hf) ages (2.6–0.7 Ga), indicating a complex structure of the Gondwanan margin. The older continental crust of this margin gained juvenile additions from the mantle around 1.0 Ga and 0.72–0.53 Ga, supported by positive Hf zircon and whole rock Nd isotopic evidence. Though absent in the Kaczawa Complex today, such rocks were likely eroded alongside volcanic ash falls during the Cambrian. Detritus is interpreted to be transported from the Saharan Metacraton, the Trans-Saharan Belt, and the Anti-Atlas domain, shaped by the drainage systems of northern Gondwana. Contributions from the West African Craton cannot be ruled out, but the source regions exhibit greater complexity than this single craton. Mafic volcanism, ranging from WPB to OIB types with TDM(Nd) ages of 0.72–0.53 Ga began in the early Cambrian. This was accompanied by intermediate volcanic differentiates (TDM(Nd) 0.7–0.5 Ga) and felsic effusives (TDM(Hf, Nd) ages of 1.2–0.9 Ga), with volcanic activity peaking 500–490 Ma. This early evolution of the Kaczawa Complex reflects a continental rift-back arc basin system linked to oceanic subduction beneath the extended Gondwanan margin. La construcción de la identidad masculina de los obreros migrantes extremeños (1973-1993) aborda los efectos que provocó el gran éxodo rural de la segunda mitad del siglo XX en la identidad varonil de los emigrantes extremeños. Entre la década de los 50 y los años de la Transición, las zonas rurales del Estado español entraron en un proceso de declive poblacional, en el que la mayor parte de sus habitantes se trasladaron en masa a los centros industriales del país. Este éxodo —que ha sido calificado de traumático por varios estudios— tuvo unas consecuencias devastadoras. Por una parte, las zonas de recepción multiplicaron varias veces su número de moradores, lo que supuso el nacimiento de amplios poblados chabolistas y de polígonos de vivienda construidos en masa. La información y la comunicación internacionales como herramientas de inserción laboral para el alumnado de Relaciones Internacionales
El proyecto pretende poner en marcha una participación directa y permanente durante el curso académico 2023/2024 del alumnado de la UCM en un medio de comunicación digital de nueva creación especializado en información internacional. El alumnado pertenecerá principalmente, aunque no solamente, a los siguientes estudios: grados de Relaciones Internacionales, Periodismo y Comunicación Audiovisual, doble grado de Economía y Relaciones Internacionales; máster en Política Internacional; programa de doctorado en Ciencias Políticas y de la Administración y Relaciones Internacionales. Realizarán materiales informativos que se podrán difundir en las diversas secciones el medio de comunicación: análisis, reportajes, entrevistas en profundidad, cronologías, infografías, perfiles, podcasts, moderación y participación en debates con expertos internacionalistas grabados y emitidos, y la sección cultural. El alumnado de grado, doble grado y máster aprenderá a realizar este tipo de materiales en las clases prácticas de las diversas asignaturas que imparte el profesorado participante, teniendo como apoyo fundamental a las alumnas de doctorado que participan en el proyecto. El alumnado estará acompañado durante todo el proceso ya que el profesor responsable del proyecto y el alumnado de doctorado participante en el mismo están implicados en el medio de comunicación, junto a 25 exalumnas y exalumnos de los grados de Relaciones Internacionales y de Periodismo, y doble grado de Economía y Relaciones Internacionales. También realizará un breve estudio-análisis de la utilización de redes sociales de una ONG del ámbito internacional, por cada grupo de trabajo, poniendo en marcha dinámicas de una consultora de análisis de comunicación internacional.
