    The effect of Mo and Co on germination percentage, early seedling growth, leaf area, root development and pigment composition (chlorophyll and carotenoids) of mung (Vigna radiata) seedling were evaluated. Mo and Co treatment at 10, 50 and 100 μM L−1 affected germination percentage, early seedling growth, leaf area, root development and pigment composition (chlorophyll and carotenoids) of mung as compared to control. It was found that 10, 50 and 100 μM concentration of Mo showed beneficial effect. However, Co at 10 μM concentration also showed beneficial effect, but at 50 and 100 μM concentration it showed toxic effect on all the parameters

    A new species named as Psychotria zapotecana (Spermacoceae tribe) was collected in the State Oaxaca (South Mexico) in the framework of the collecting program of SERBO. It is related to P. mirandae C. W. Hamilt. of Chiapas Veracruz and Guatemala, but differs from it by having shorter chartaceous leaves, green when dry with abaxially domatiate and hirsute limb and nerves, obtuse and mucronulate apex and 4-merous flowers

    Borhidi’s system of natural values for species was developed and implemented for the historically grown fruit cultivars and the most important generative and vegetative rootstocks. A total of 865 types were considered and evaluated, and a more suitable ecological method was defined for each type. Further refinement was suggested for the relative ecological values of salt tolerance (SB). The methodology and definitions published in Kanitzia were completed by other species and a graphically expressed comparison on the number of species. The published illustrations on the fruit varieties and the cultivation itself confirm that some specific features should be changed concerning the Raunkiaer’s life-form categories. Relative ecological indicator values for the clones could be further refined, and the values are very different in case of rootstock-scion combinations. Those fruit-growing species not present in the cultural flora, are not considered here (Berberis vulgaris, Sorbus domestica, Trapa natans, Viburnum opulus)

    Pollen morphological characters of Inuleaea members have been investigated from Europe. Our work shows the results of some not well acknowledged species, e.g. I. spiraeifolia, I. hirta as well as some other members of the genus, e.g. I. britannica, I. salicina, I. helenium. Our study represents some differences between the seven species even without light microscopical analysis. The scanning electron microscopy results are encouraging for more detailed examination of the species, because of the differences between the seven species we found can be conclusive for taxonomy

    Laboratory experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the insecticidal effect of three bio-insecticides (i.e., Spinosad, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae) against Sitophilus oryzae on wheat. In parallel, wheat was treated with diatomaceous earth (DE) at one dosage rate, 2 g/kg of wheat either alone or in combination with three bio-insecticides applied at three dosage rates for each. Mortality of adults was counted 24 h, 48 h, 7 days, and 14 days later. In general, the combination of DE with three bio-insecticides increased the mortality rates of S. oryzae compared with treatments alone due to a potential additive effect. The highest spinosad/DE dosage combination resulted in the greatest mortality against S. oryzae compared with other treatments at all exposure periods. Moreover, significantly less progeny were produced on wheat treated with the highest dosage of spinosad with DE, in comparison with the other treatments. The results of this study suggest that bio-insecticides can be used effectively with DE against S. oryzae by exhibiting additive effect

    Pear ester based lures for the codling moth Cydia pomonella L. — A summary of research efforts in Hungary

    For acceptable capture efficiency it was necessary to add acetic acid to pear ester for successful trapping of codling moth populations in Hungary. The activity of pear ester on its own was very weak and unsatisfactory. Pear ester+acetic acid baited traps caught on an average 25% (mean of 6 tests) of the catch in pheromone traps. Traps with pear ester+acetic acid were clearly advantageous as compared to pheromone traps in that they caught not only males but also females (both virgins and mated) in a high percentage. Traps baited with pear ester+acetic acid clearly outperformed high-load pheromone lures in orchards with mating disruption and should be the right choice for the grower for sampling populations of codling moth in a mating disruption situation. In orchards with no mating disruption the relative inefficiency of pear ester+acetic acid baited traps as compared to pheromone traps can easily be overcome by applying more traps than usual. Thus the overall codling moth numbers caught will become higher and would make any conclusions drawn more reliable. Traps baited with pear ester+acetic acid always caught more when set at the highest branches (3.0–3.5 m) than when set lower (1.5–1.8 m) on trees

    The monoterpenoid (S)-carvone was shown earlier to induce glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and to attenuate necrotic lesion formation in Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) inoculated, hypersensitively reacting tobacco Xanthi-nc plants. To explore structure-activity relationships, three monoterpenes and five monoterpenoids were tested for their ability to induce increased GST activity in tobacco leaf discs. (S)-Carvone proved to be the most potent inducer. (S)-Carvone treatments markedly up-regulated the expression of several tobacco GST genes belonging to the phi, tau and theta classes, particularly in the case of tau class GSTs. Furthermore, TMV inoculation slightly induced the transcript abundance of the GSTT2 gene. The expression of three catalase (CAT) genes was also examined in (S)-carvone-treated tobacco leaf discs. The expression of CAT1 was not influenced by (S)-carvone treatments, whereas that of CAT2 was significantly repressed. (S)-Carvone very weakly induced the transcription of the CAT3 gene. The effect of the opposite enantiomer, (R)-carvone on the expression of GST and CAT genes was similar to that of (S)-carvone. Our results suggest that the antioxidative reactions catalyzed by tau and theta class GSTs contribute to the attenuation of necrotic disease symptoms in TMV-inoculated tobacco plants
