SUMMARY To determine the best shape/cost ratio for small wood structures many boundary conditions must be fixed such as their use as hay-loft and/or animal shelter, their dimensions and structural project. First of all, it was calculated the amount of hay necessary to feed an animal during a season period. It was chosen to refer to bovine specie: it resulted a 8,0 m3 of hay for winter period, calculated with a bulk density of 200 kg/m3. Than, three shapes were compared: a triangular shape roof, a double-pitch roofed structure and a self-sustaining arch roof. The total cost of the structures was calculated referring to three classes of materials: concrete used in foundations, wood used for structures, and steel used for roof. The roof was fixed as a self-sustaining corrugated steel, in order to achieve a lower structural complexity and therefore a lower cost. Considering a wild (1) Dipartimento di Produzioni Animali, Direttore Prof. Paolo Verità. (2) Dipartimento di Agronomia e Gestione Agroecosistema, Direttore Prof. S. Miele. state breeding at marginal areas, the classic double-pitch roofed structures resulted in the lowest cost. Nevertheless, another interesting structure is the self-sustaining arch, which shows fast and easy to build-up characteristics. Their first installation cost varies between 400 and 500 Euro/head. Considering a twenty years duration-life it means a real cost per year of 35 ÷ 45 Euro/(head.year)
SUMMARY Long bone fractures are a common event in dogs and cats. A retrospective study (January 2000 to October 2002) of 106 patients with appendicular fractures, 76 dogs and 30 cats respectively, was performed. These 106 fractures are classified by their characteristics; 65 of the 106 patients had a surgical stabilization with plates, external fixators, pins, ecc. Then, the Authors examined the dogs and cats underwent on surgery in order to evaluate the time between trauma and surgical procedures (48 hours, 48-120 hours, more than 120 hours) and the techniques reduction employed. Moreover, the 65 patients (19 cats and 46 dogs), divided into three classes of age (younger than 12 months, from 12 to 86 months, older than 86 months) were evaluated for the time of clinic union and the eventually delayed healing. This evaluation showed a difference for what concern times and quality of the healing process among the patients treated 48 hours from trauma and the ones treated 48-120 from trauma, with complications in the 14% of cases and 26% of cases respectively. On the basis of the results of the review, the Authors concluded that the time of surgery of long bone fractures is ideal in the first 48 hours from trauma

Revival of Non-Abelian Monopoles and Confinement in QCD
Central role played by certain non-Abelian monopoles (of
Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type) in the infrared dynamics in many confining
vacua of softly broken supersymmetric gauge theories, has recently
been clarified. We discuss here the main lessons to be learned from these
studies for the confinement nechanism in QCD
SUMMARY The retrospective analysis, conducted on 714 anaesthetised dogs over one year, points out the utility of this drug employed only if necessary and not during pre-medication. Considering both administration or not of atropine and parasympathetic stimulation, 189 dogs, amongst all cases, have been included in the study and divided in four groups (AP, NA, AOT, AONT). The percentage of dogs that has received atropine is resulted of 40,7% in relation of 189 dogs selected and of 10,7% compared to the total number of anaesthetised patients. In opposite with bibliography, of all dogs that would have received atropine, the administration of this drug, in pre-medication or during anaesthesia, is resulted necessary in only 23,2% of them. The dosage of atropine given only if necessary, to treat bradychardia, has not resulted higher comparing to dosage employed for pre-emptive administration. Atropine has produced a rise of heart rate but it has not altered respiratory rate. The usage of atropine only if necessary and not in pre-medication has not compromised the patient condition; on the contrary it has allowed a proper management of anaesthesia. A-V blocks due to atropine somministration are resulted transient and simple to resolve. Resorting to atropine, only for treatment of parasympathetic stimulation, provides a management of anaesthesia corresponding with anaesthetist requirements and patient conditions
Color confinement and dual superconductivity in unquenched QCD
SUMMARY We report on evidence from lattice simulations that confinement is produced
by dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD as in quenched QCD.
Preliminary information is obtained on the order of the deconfining phase
transition
Multicritical phenomena in O(n_1)+O(n_2)-symmetric theories
We study the multicritical behavior arising from the competition of two
distinct types of ordering characterized by O(n) symmetries. For this purpose,
we consider the renormalization-group flow for the most general -symmetric Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian involving two fields
and with and components respectively. In
particular, we determine in which cases, approaching the multicritical point,
one may observe the asymptotic enlargement of the symmetry to O(N) with
N=n_1+n_2. By performing a five-loop -expansion computation we
determine the fixed points and their stability. It turns out that for
N=n_1+n_2\ge 3 the O(N)-symmetric fixed point is unstable. For N=3, the
multicritical behavior is described by the biconal fixed point with critical
exponents that are very close to the Heisenberg ones. For N\ge 4 and any
n_1,n_2 the critical behavior is controlled by the tetracritical decoupled
fixed point. We discuss the relevance of these results for some physically
interesting systems, in particular for anisotropic antiferromagnets in the
presence of a magnetic field and for high-T_c superconductors. Concerning the
SO(5) theory of superconductivity, we show that the bicritical O(5) fixed point
is unstable with a significant crossover exponent, ;
this implies that the O(5) symmetry is not effectively realized at the point
where the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition lines meet. The
multicritical behavior is either governed by the tetracritical decoupled fixed
point or is of first-order type if the system is outside its attraction domain
Third-harmonic exponent in three-dimensional N-vector models
We compute the crossover exponent associated with the spin-3 operator in
three-dimensional O(N) models. A six-loop field-theoretical calculation in the
fixed-dimension approach gives for the experimentally
relevant case N=2 (XY model). The corresponding exponent
is compared with the experimental estimates obtained in materials undergoing a
normal-incommensurate structural transition and in liquid crystals at the
smectic-A--hexatic-B phase transition, finding good agreement
The 3-D O(4) universality class and the phase transition in two-flavor QCD
We determine the critical equation of state of the three-dimensional O(4)
universality class. We first consider the small-field expansion of the
effective potential (Helmholtz free energy). Then, we apply a systematic
approximation scheme based on polynomial parametric representations that are
valid in the whole critical regime, satisfy the correct analytic properties
(Griffiths' analyticity), take into account the Goldstone singularities at the
coexistence curve, and match the small-field expansion of the effective
potential. From the approximate representations of the equation of state, we
obtain estimates of several universal amplitude ratios.
The three-dimensional O(4) universality class is expected to describe the
finite-temperature chiral transition of quantum chromodynamics with two light
flavors. Within this picture, the O(4) critical equation of state relates the
reduced temperature, the quark masses, and the condensates around T_c in the
limit of vanishing quark masses
