Nonabelian Monopoles and the Vortices that Confine Them
Nonabelian magnetic monopoles of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type have
recently been shown to appear as the dominant infrared degrees of freedom in a
class of softly broken supersymmetric gauge theories in which the
gauge group is broken to various nonabelian subgroups by an adjoint
Higgs VEV. When the low-energy gauge group is further broken completely by
e.g. squark VEVs, the monopoles representing are confined by the
nonabelian vortices arising from the breaking of , discussed recently
(hep-th/0307278). By considering the system with , H = {SU(N)
\times U(1) {\o}{\mathbb Z}_N}, as an example, we show that the total magnetic
flux of the minimal monopole agrees precisely with the total magnetic flux
flowing along the single minimal vortex.
The possibility for such an analysis reflects the presence of free parameters
in the theory - the bare quark mass and the adjoint mass - such that
for the topologically nontrivial solutions of vortices and of
unconfined monopoles exist at distinct energy scales
Nonabelian Monopoles
We study topological as well as dynamical properties of BPS nonabelian
magnetic monopoles of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type in ,
and SO(N) gauge theories, spontaneously broken to nonabelian
subgroups . We find that monopoles transform under the group dual to in
a tensor representation of rank determined by the corresponding element in
. When the system is embedded in a supersymmetric theory
with an appropriate set of flavors with appropriate bare masses, the BPS
monopoles constructed semiclassically persist in the full quantum theory. This
result supports the identification of ``dual quarks'' found at -vacua of
theories with the nonabelian magnetic monopoles. We present
several consistency checks of our monopole spectra
A Computational Study of Cost Reoptimization for Min Cost Flow Problems
In the last two decades, a number of algorithms for the linear single-commodity Min Cost Flow problem (MCF) have been proposed, and several efficient codes are available that implement different variants of the algorithms. The practical significance of the algorithms has been tested by comparing the time required by their implementations for solving ``from scratch'' instances of (MCF), of different classes, as the size of the problem (number of nodes and arcs) increases. However, in many applications several closely related instances of (MCF) have to be sequentially solved, so that reoptimization techniques can be used to speed up computations, and the most attractive algorithm is the one which minimizes the total time required to solve all the instances in the sequence. In this paper we compare the performances of four different efficient implementations of algorithms for (MCF) under cost reoptimization in the context of decomposition algorithms for the Multicommodity Min Cost Flow problem (MMCF), showing that for some classes of instances the relative performances of the codes doing ``from scratch'' optimization do not accurately predict the relative performances when reoptimization is used. Since the best solver depends both on the class and on the size of the instance, this work also shows the usefulness of a standard interface for (MCF) problem solvers that we have proposed and implemented

Gauge-invariant field-strength correlators in pure Yang-Mills and full QCD at finite temperature
We study by numerical simulations on a lattice the behaviour of the
gauge-invariant two-point correlation functions of the gauge-field strengths
across the deconfinement phase transition, both for the pure-gauge SU(3) theory
and for full QCD with two flavours. Quenched data agree within errors with
previous determinations, but have much higher statistics. A best-fit analysis
of the data has been performed, both for the quenched and the full-QCD case,
showing that the electric gluon condensate drops to zero at the deconfining
phase transition
Osservazioni su leucochloridium paradoxum carus, 1835
RIASSUNTO Viene segnalato e descritto Leucochloridium paradoxum in Philomachus pugnax (pavoncella combattente). SUMMARY Leucochloridium paradoxum is reported in Philomachus pugnax. The taxonomic history of the genus Leucochloridium appears very complicated. Braun (1901, 1902) classified the known species of the genus as synonyms of Distomum macrostomum found by Rudolphi (1803). The genus was reviewed from the taxonomic point of view by Witenberg (1925), which evaluated morphological and biological characters for specific diagnosis. Szidat (1936) observed that, under the name Distomum macrostomum, different species were present, one described by Rudolphi (1803) as Fasciola macrostoma and one studied by Zeller (1874) and Heckert (1889) as D. macrostomum. According to Kagan (1952), L. paradoxum corresponds to species studied by Zeller (1874), while the species identified by Heckert (1889) would be a different species which Kagan called L. heckerti; however, yet in 1958 Yamaguti, in his monumental Systema Helminthum, reported L. macrostomum as type species of genus Leucochloridium and L. paradoxum as synonym. The presence of L. paradoxum does not result apparently reported in Italy. In fact, Stossich (1896) described and figured a species from the intestine of Numenius tenuirostris as D. macrostomum which belongs in the genus Leucochloridium. However, because the specific diagnosis is so brief and the figures so poor, this species must be listed as species inquirenda. Thereupon, Piersanti (1947) delineated a map of L. macrostomum in Italy, reporting its presence in many species of migrant birds. The author did not describe and did not draw the parasites observed in the different animal species, therefore it is not possible to identify the involved parasites
Risultati presentati a: International Symposium on Managing Partridges and other Game in the Agricultural Landscape, Udine 22nd to 25th October 2003. SUMMARY Captivity rearing of wild pheasant is changing from an experimental to a commercial technology. Good results are observed after pheasant release of the offspring obtained from captured animals, therefore we wanted to test the genetic and productive characteristics of wild pheasants living in different protected areas (ZRC) of Central Italy. In order to estimate the level of genetic variability present in the natural populations of Phasianus colchicus, 99 samples of wild pheasants sampled in 6 different locations of Central Italy were genotyped with 3 microsatellite loci (GUJ23, GUJ59 and GUJ86), using pairs of primers developed for Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) that were able to amplify in Phasianus colchicus and resulted polymorphic. In the meantime a sample of wild pheasant captured in different protected areas of the province of Florence were transferred in a breeding farm and the productive performance were recorded. The molecular data obtained were used to calculate the genetic differentiation within and between different pheasant populations (AMOVA, F-statistic) and a PCA was used to visualize the data. The observed homozygosity ranged between 0.33 +/ -0.12 and 1. 89% of molecular variance resulted located within populations. The mean Fis (inbreeding) resulted 0.234 while the mean Fst (differentiation between population) resulted 0.084. The productive performances of the captured pheasants confirmed the lower performance which can be obtained by just captured wild pheasants in respect to the offspring of the captured pheasants and the reared populations
SUMMARY In small ruminants gastrointestinal parasitosis represent a severe limit to the quality of productions and animal welfare. The difference between the dissimilar levels of sheep’s infection in the flock is a relevant marker of the high variability about the gastrointestinal parasite resistance. In fact, there is considerable interest in the assessment of the resistance of a parasitised host, especially for nutrition and breeding studies. The aim of this work is the evaluation, in a farm of ovine Massese’s breed, of heritability and repeatability coefficients about the main phaenotipic traits connected with resistance to gastrointestinal strongylosis: faecal egg count and packed cell volume. Animals were tested eight times, during periods of moderate and high elmints infestations. One faecal sample per animal was collected and processed in order to determine the faecal egg count, using the modified McMaster tecnique by Permin and Hansen, transforming the values obtained into natural logarithm log (FEC + 25). At the time of faecal collection, the animal also underwent blood analyses for determination of haematocrit. These preliminary results show that heritability coefficient of faecal egg count was quite low, with a value of 0.10; repeatability coefficient was little higher, with a value of 0.16. Packed cell volume genetic values were clearly more favourable, presenting respectively 0.22 (heritability) and 0.58 (repeatability). These results, derivate from first italian studies on Massese’s breed, can give an interesting direction on the possibility to adopt suitable genetic improvement plans for gastrointestinal parasite resistance and, in particular, low coefficients of faecal egg count underline the needs of further significant investigations
