Critical behavior of O(2)xO(N) symmetric models

    No full text
We investigate the controversial issue of the existence of universality classes describing critical phenomena in three-dimensional statistical systems characterized by a matrix order parameter with symmetry O(2)xO(N) and symmetry-breaking pattern O(2)xO(N) -> O(2)xO(N-2). Physical realizations of these systems are, for example, frustrated spin models with noncollinear order. Starting from the field-theoretical Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian, we consider the massless critical theory and the minimal-subtraction scheme without epsilon expansion. The three-dimensional analysis of the corresponding five-loop expansions shows the existence of a stable fixed point for N=2 and N=3, confirming recent field-theoretical results based on a six-loop expansion in the alternative zero-momentum renormalization scheme defined in the massive disordered phase. In addition, we report numerical Monte Carlo simulations of a class of three-dimensional O(2)xO(2)-symmetric lattice models. The results provide further support to the existence of the O(2)xO(2) universality class predicted by the field-theoretical analyses

Best Bets: Thousands Queries in Search of a Client

    No full text
A number of applications require selecting targets for specific contents on the basis of criteria defined by the contents providers themselves. Performing this task requires inverting the direction of search, retrieving queries from documents rather than vice versa, as in ordinary information retrieval. We present a retrieval system called Best Bets that handles this case. Best Bets generalize Information Filtering and encompass a variety of applications including editorial suggestions, promotional campaigns and targeted advertising. In particular we show how to model Google AdWords™ as a Best Bets system. We discuss how to address performance issues in the implementation of Best Bets, in particular efficient search, incremental updates and dynamic ranking. We report about experiments on an implementation of our techniques and a comparison with previous approaches

Critical slowing down of topological modes

    No full text
We investigate the critical slowing down of the topological modes using local updating algorithms in lattice 2-d CP^(N-1) models. We show that the topological modes experience a critical slowing down that is much more severe than the one of the quasi-Gaussian modes relevant to the magnetic susceptibility, which is characterized by τmagξz\tau_{\rm mag} \sim \xi^z with z2z\approx 2. We argue that this may be a general feature of Monte Carlo simulations of lattice theories with non-trivial topological properties, such as QCD, as also suggested by recent Monte Carlo simulations of 4-d SU(N) lattice gauge theories

Investigations on the deconfining phase transition in QCD

    No full text
We investigate the deconfining phase transition in SU(3) pure gauge theory and in full QCD with two flavors of staggered fermions by means of a gauge invariant thermal partition functional. In the pure gauge case our finite size scaling analysis is in agreement with the well known weak first order phase transition. In the case of 2 flavors full QCD we find that the phase transition is consistent with weak first order, contrary to the expectation of a crossover for not too large quark masses

A finite temperature investigation of dual superconductivity in the modified SO(3) lattice gauge theory

    No full text
We study the SO(3) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the adjoint Wilson action modified by a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 monopole suppression term and by means of the Pisa disorder operator. We find evidence for a finite temperature deconfinement transition driven by the condensation of U(1) magnetic charges. A finite-size scaling test shows consistency with the critical exponents of the 3D Ising model

SUMMARY Intraocular pressure results from a relative equilibrium between aqueous humor formation, aqueous humor outflow and the resistence of the fibrous tunics to pressure. Factors that influence intraocular pressure are numerous. The different drugs administred to anesthetize animals may affect intraocular pressure directly by influencing the aqueous humor dynamics or indirectly by causing hypercapnia, changes in the extraocular muscle tone, hypoxemia and hypothermia. The effects of anaesthesia on intraocular pressure were studied in dogs anesthetized. Sixteen normal dogs, subdivided into two groups of eight (I and II), were used. I group dogs were premedicated with medetomidine (10 mcg/kg), diazepam (0,25 mg/kg), ketamine (1 mg/kg), tramadol (2 mg/kg); these animals were induced with propofol (2 mg/kg) and maintenanced with isoflurane, tramadol (200 mcg/kg/hour) and ketamine (0,5 mg/kg/40 min); anaesthesia was reversed with atipamezole (50 mcg/kg). II group dogs were sedated with medetomidine (10mcg/kg), diazepam (0,25 mg/kg), ketamine (0,5-1 mg/kg) and propofol (0,5-1 mg/kg); sedation was reversed with atipamezole (50 mcg/kg). Applanation tonometry (TonoPen™XL) was used in the two groups to determine intraocular pressure in both eyes. The measurements were taken before administration of the drugs and during phases on anahestesia or sedation. The profiles of the intraocular pressure results were different for the two groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the phases on anaesthesia in I group; significant differences were found between the phases on sedation in II group. However in I and II groups intaocular pressure fluctations remained into normal range. The maintenance of intraocular pressure within or below physiological levels is recognized as fundamental for a good anesthetic technique. The aim of the anaesthesist should be to maintain intraocular pressure within normal limits in intraocular surgery, but also in subjects with intraocular pressure values border-line

    Get PDF

    No full text
SUMMARY This study start by moving the analysis back to the point when the system of scientific communication began to emerge, thanks to the novel way in which a few creative individuals managed to harness printing. In this manner, we will be able to retrieve some of the original meanings and intentions of the system itself, as well as the intentions that presided over its inception. In effect, this book asks whether the results of fundamental research in science, technology, and medicine—results that clearly stand at a pre-competitive stage if viewed in commercial terms, results that may even, in some cases, save lives—will remain part of humanity’s knowledge commons, or whether they will be gradually confiscated for the benefit of smaller and smaller scientific and business elites
