SUMMARY The paper analyzes the history of Santa Chiara Novella, a Poor Clares convent founded in Pisa in 1331 by Count Fazio Novello della Gherardesca. The study examines Fazio’s testament and other pisan documents from XIV –XV centuries about the history and architecture of the church and the convent
Expansion of a finite size plasma in vacuum
SUMMARY The expansion dynamics of a finite size plasma is examined from an analytical
perspective. Results regarding the charge distribution as well as the
electrostatic potential are presented. The acceleration of the ions and the
associated cooling of the electrons that takes place during the plasma
expansion is described. An extensive analysis of the transition between the
semi infinite and the finite size plasma behaviour is carried out. Finally, a
test of the analytical results, performed through numerical simulations, is
presented
Analyticity in theta and infinite volume limit of the topological susceptibility in SU(3) gauge theory
The large volume behaviour of the topological susceptibility in SU(3) gauge
theory is investigated on the lattice to establish an upper limit on the parity
violating terms
Two flavor QCD and Confinement
We argue that the order of the chiral transition for N_f=2 is a sensitive
probe of the QCD vacuum, in particular of the mechanism of color confinement. A
strategy is developed to investigate the order of the transition by use of
finite size scaling analysis. An in-depth numerical investigation is performed
with staggered fermions on lattices with N_t=4 and N_s=12,16,20,24,32 and quark
masses am_q ranging from 0.01335 to 0.307036. The specific heat and a number of
susceptibilities are measured and compared with the expectations of an O(4)
second order and of a first order phase transition. A second order transition
in the O(4) and O(2) universality classes are excluded. Substantial evidence
emerges for a first order transition. A detailed comparison with previous works
is performed
The chiral transition in two-flavor QCD
QCD with N_f=2 is a specially interesting system to investigate the chiral
transition. The order of the transition has still not been established. We
report the results of an in-depth numerical investigation performed with
staggered fermions on lattices with L_t=4 and L_s=12,16,20,24,32 and quark
masses am_q ranging from 0.01335 to 0.307036. Using finite-size techniques we
compare the scaling behavior of a number of thermodynamical susceptibilities
with the expectations of O(4) and O(2) universality classes. Clear disagreement
is observed. Indications of a first order transition are found
Transitions and crossover phenomena in fully frustrated XY systems
We study the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY (FFXY) model and two related
models, a discretization of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian for the
critical modes of the FFXY model and a coupled Ising-XY model, by means of
Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices L x L, L=O(10^3). We show that their
phase diagram is characterized by two very close chiral and spin transitions,
at T_ch > T_sp respectively, of the Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless type. At T_ch
the Ising regime sets in only after a preasymptotic regime, which appears
universal to some extent. The approach is nonmonotonic for most observables,
with a wide region controlled by an effective exponent nu_eff=0.8
Efficient Minimization of Fully Testable 2-SPP Networks
The paper presents a heuristic algorithm for the minimization of 2-SPP networks, i.e., three-level XOR-AND-OR forms with XOR gates restricted to fan-in 2.
Previous works had presented exact algorithms for the minimization of unrestricted SPP networks and of 2-SPP networks. The exact minimization procedures were formulated as covering problems as in the minimization of SOP forms and had worst-case exponential complexity. Extending the expand-irredundant-reduce paradigm of ESPRESSO heuristic, we propose a minimization algorithm for 2-SPP networks that iterates local minimization and reshape of a solution until further improvement. We introduce also the notion of EXOR-irredundant to prove that OR-AND-EXOR irredundant networks are fully testable and guarantee that our algorithm yields OR-AND-EXOR irredundant solutions. We report a large set of experiments showing impressive high-quality results with affordable run times, handling also examples whose exact solutions could not be computed
SUMMARY Fear in the dog is an emotional state, indispensable for the survival of the species, that becomes pathological when behavioural displays are extreme as regards the situation. In this case we talk about a phobia. The present study was carried out on 98 dogs brought to a visit at the Center of Behavioural Counselling in the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology at the University of Pisa. The aim was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of different protocols used for phobic dogs. Against a real prevalence of the phobia of 64.3%, only 24.5% of dogs were leaded to the visit for that reason. These subjects, forming a unhomogeneous popolation for sex, age and breed, showed mainly a generalised phobia (62.5%), followed for numerical importance by the phobia of noises (25.0%) and the phobia of noises associated with the phobia of people (12.5%). The treatment always provided for a component of behavioural therapy, while only in 20.0% of the cases psychoactive drugs were used; instead, to almost the whole of patients non conventional medicaments were instead administrated, such as pheromones (50.0%), homeopathic rescues (16.7%) and Bach’s flowers (83.3%). In the follow up resulted that the therapeutic protocols we used determined an improvement in the phobia in 73.3% of the cases, with a complete resolution corresponding to 33.3%. These data suggest that it’s possible, through a correct diagnosis and therapy, to reduce fear in phobic dogs, to make them more manageable and to safeguard their psycho-physical wellbeing
Bacterial zoonoses among domestic reptiles
SUMMARY In the last years an ever-increasing importation of exotic animals destined to live under domestic conditions has been observed. Chelonians, terrestrial and aquatic turtles, are the most commonly present in domestic environment, even if saurians (lizards) and ophidians (snakes) are frequently kept in houses. Reptiles, that can be considered new pet animals, even if clinically healthy, often harbor opportunistic pathogens, which can become cause of serious infections under stress condition. Viral, protozoal, fungal and parasitic agents can infect the cold-blooded animals, but bacteria are the most common pathogens recovered from these animals and in most cases they can be transmitted to humans. Domestic reptiles represent an emerging problem for the public health. New reptile owners should be educated about a proper animal care in order to assure the pet health, to protect themselves from venomous or aggressive species, and to avoid the risk of infection. The main bacterial infections, transmitted from reptiles to humans, are reported, with particular attention to salmonellosis, mycobacteriosis, chlamydophilosis and Aeromonas and Pseudomonas infections.
