Tra le iniziative promosse dalla Lituania in occasione di tale evento, vi sono i lavori di restauro e conservazione del centro storico e dei principali monumenti di Vilnius. Requirements of Devout Contemplation: Text and Image for the Poor Clares in Trecento Pisa
SUMMARY This article analyzes two works of art made for the Poor Clares in Pisa in the third quarter of the fourteenth century. One is a set of frescoes featuring the Life of the Virgin that once decorated the nuns’ choir of the convent of Santa Chiara Novella at San Martino, and the other is an illustrated manuscript of the Meditationes Vitae Christi possibly also made for the San Martino nuns. The study of the Life of the Virgin cycle in both works and the interrelationship between text and image reveals an emphasis on the imitatio Mariae designed to instruct the nuns in basic aspect of female Franciscan convent life, including obedience and community, as well as devotion to poverty and the Eucharist. RIASSUNTO L’articolo analizza due opere d’arte fatte per le clarisse di Pisa intorno al 1360. La prima è una serie di affreschi sulla Vita della Vergine, che un tempo decorava le pareti del coro delle monache del monastero di Santa Chiara Novella in San Martino, e l’altra è un manoscritto miniato delle Meditationes Vitae Christi probabilmente anch’esso fatto per le monache di San Martino. Lo studio del ciclo della Vita della Vergine in entrambe le opere e la relazione che si scorge tra il testo e le immagini rivela l’importanza data alla imitatio Mariae come mezzo per l’istruzione delle monache sugli aspetti basilari della vita in un monastero femminile francescano, comprendenti sia l’obbedienza e la vita di comunità, sia la devozione alla povertà e all’Eucarestia
Behaviour of the topological susceptibility in two colour QCD across the finite density transition
SUMMARY The behaviour of the topological susceptibility \chi in QCD with two colours
and 8 flavours of quarks is studied at nonzero temperature on the lattice
across the finite density transition. It is shown that the signal of \chi drops
abruptly at a critical chemical potential \mu_c, much as it happens at the
finite temperature and zero density transition. The Polyakov loop and the
chiral condensate undergo their transitions at the same critical value \mu_c.
At a value \mu_s of the chemical potential, called saturation point, which in
our case satisfies \mu_s > \mu_c, Pauli blocking supervenes and consequently
the theory becomes quenched

color confinement, disorder parameters can be developed which are generally
expressed as ratios of partition functions and whose numerical determination is
usually challenging. We develop an efficient method for their computation and
apply it to the study of dual superconductivity in 4d compact U(1) gauge
theory
GlueDomains: Organization and Accessibility of Network Monitoring Data in a Grid
The availability of the outcome of network monitoring activities, while valuable for the operation of Grid applications, poses serious scalability problems: in principle, in a Grid composed of resources, we need to keep record of end-to-end paths. We introduce a scalable approach to network monitoring, that consists in partitioning the Grid into limiting monitoring activity to the measurement of domain-to-domain connectivity. Partitions must be consistent with network performance, since we expect that an observed network performance between domains is representative of the performance between the Grid Services included into such domains. We argue that partition design is a critical step: a consequence of an inconsistent partitioning is the production of invalid characteristics. The paper discusses such approach, also exploring its limits. We describe a fully functional prototype which is currently under test in the frame of the DATATAG project
Packet Delay Monitoring without a GPS
This paper illustrates a technique to characterize one-way packet delays. Such technique does not depend on external clock synchronization facilities: instead, it computes the relative skew of the two clocks, and uses this information to characterize one-way packet delays.
We focus on the applicability of such technique to a network monitoring environment, and perform an extensive test that includes second order clock frequency variations. We conclude that the approach is especially suited to estimate jitter, and other characteristics of one-way delay variation. It can be helpful also to evaluate second order parameters of one-way delay, like standard deviation, when second order variations of clock frequency, usually due to temperature variations, are compensated by hardware. This result makes one-way delay variations measurement widely accessible to Internet hosts, at a cost which is overall comparable with that of a ping
Desmoglein 1 in ovine muzzle skin detected by immunohistochemistryand immunoblotting
SUMMARY Desmosomes are epithelial adhesion structures that assure the mechanical cell-cell adhesion, by linking the intermediate filaments of two adjacent cells. Several proteins have been characterised as component of these structures and, among them, desmogleins are known to be the autoantigens in some autoimmune diseases that go by the name of pemphigus complex diseases. In particular Desmoglein 1 is the targeted antigen in Pemphigus foliaceus. This study aims at revealing the presence of Desmoglein 1 in the ovine muzzle skin using a commercial monoclonal antibody, raised against human desmoglein-1, on samples obtained from sheep muzzle. Immunohistochemical analyses (streptavidin-peroxidase method) and immunoblotting analyses (chemiluminescence method) have been performed. Immunohistochemical evaluation allowed for detection of a pericellular staining of keratinocyte cell membranes in the spinous and the basal layers of epidermis. A positive immunoreaction was obtained when the anti-Dsg-1 antibody was reacted with human cheek epidermis used as positive control. Specificity of the immune reaction was confirmed by the lack of staining in samples incubated with the anti-vimentin antibody used as negative control. Densitometric analyses of the chemiluminescence film showed three bands. One of them could be referred to Desmoglein 1, the second one to Desmoglein 3 and the last one to a Desmoglein-Plakoglobin complex. RIASSUNTO I desmosomi sono strutture di adesione tipiche dei tessuti epiteliali che connettono i filamenti intermedi del citoscheletro di due cellule adiacenti, assicurando la loro adesione meccanica. Tra le proteine che compongono queste strutture, le desmogleine sono note come antigene target in alcune malattie autoimmuni riunite sotto il nome di malattie del complesso del pemfigo. La desmogleina 1, in particolare, si comporta da auto antigene nel pemfigo foliaceo. Lo scopo della presente ricerca è stato quello di mettere in evidenza questa proteina su campioni di cute prelevate da musello di pecora con l’utilizzo di un anticorpo monoclonale indotto contro la desmogleina 1 dell’uomo. Su di essi sono state condotte indagini immunoistochimiche (metodo streptavidina-perossidasi) e di immunoblotting (metodo della chemiluminescenza). L’indagine immunoistochimica ha rilevato una distribuzione della proteina uniforme e pericellulare negli strati basale e spinoso dell’epidermide. La reazione positiva si è ottenuta anche su cute di guancia di uomo usata come controllo positivo. La specificità del test è stata confermata dall’assenza di positività in campioni incubati con un anticorpo antivimentina, utilizzato come controllo negativo. L’indagine di immunoblotting ha evidenziato tre bande di cui una potrebbe corrispondere alla desmogleina 1, la seconda alla desmogleina 3 e la terza ad un complesso Desmogleina-Placoglobina
Studio retrospettivo sulle affezioni orbitali associate a esoftalmo nel cane
RIASSUNTO L’esoftalmo, caratterizzato dalla protrusione di un globo oculare di dimensioni normali, è un segno clinico di frequente riscontro in molte malattie orbitali. La protrusione del bulbo oculare è causata principalmente da affezioni neoplastiche, infiammatorie, cistiche e traumatiche. All’esoftalmo possono essere associati alcuni segni clinici di malattia oculare quali alterazione della visione e dei movimenti oculari, iperemia congiuntivale, chemosi, procidenza della terza palpebra, cheratite da esposizione, dolore all’apertura della bocca, abbattimento e febbre. Nel presente lavoro sono stati esaminati in maniera retrospettiva i casi di esoftalmo valutati clinicamente tra il 2000 e il 2004. Dei 15 cani compresi nello studio, solo uno manifestava la patologia in forma bilaterale. L’iter clinico intrapreso è stato il seguente: valutazione dell’anamnesi, esame clinico generale, visita oculistica e test diagnostici ausiliari. Questi ultimi comprendevano: l’esame ecografico orbitale, associato o meno a biopsia ad ago sottile eco-guidata della massa, l’esame radiografico del cranio e del torace, in alcuni casi la TC della cavità orbitale, l’esame istologico dei campioni prelevati tramite biopsia, escissione chirurgica o post-mortem. Dai risultati ottenuti è emerso che la patologia orbitale causa d’esoftalmo è stata in 5 casi di tipo flogistico, in 9 di tipo neoplastico mentre in un solo soggetto non è stata definita. Quest’ultimo, nel quale peraltro l’esoftalmo si manifestava bilateralmente, presentava un’iperplasia generalizzata di tutte le ghiandole salivari, compresa la zigomatica. In 4 dei soggetti colpiti da forme neoplastiche, è stata diagnosticata una neoplasia orbitale primaria (2 casi di adenocarcinoma della ghiandola zigomatica, 1 emangiosarcoma e 1 neoplasia mesenchimale maligna); in 4 cani la neoplasia orbitale rappresentava l’estensione di una forma a partenza da strutture anatomiche adiacenti (adenocarcinoma nasale, linfoma intraoculare, schwannoma perioculare); in un altro caso, a carico dell’orbita, si era sviluppata una metastasi di un linfoma di origine renale. La terapia medica e/o chirurgica ha permesso una remissione completa della sintomatologia in tutti i cani affetti da patologie orbitali di tipo infiammatorio, mentre in quelli con affezioni neoplastiche si è verificata un’evoluzione clinica negativa. SUMMARY Exophthalmos is the protrusion of a normal size globe, and it’s the most frequent clinical sign of many orbital diseases. The main causes of the ocular protrusion are neoplastic, flogistic, cystic and traumatic diseases. Exophthalmos is often associated to “secondary” signs of ocular disease, such as alterations in vision and ocular movements, conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, protrusion of the nictitating membrane, swelling, exposure keratitis, pain during mandibular excursion, weakness and fever. A retrospective study of 15 dogs with exophthalmos, examined from 2000 to 2004, was undertaken; only one dog was presented to the clinical examination for bilateral exophthalmos. The 15 patients differed for age and breed. A standard diagnostic procedure was performed. History, general physical examination, ophthalmic examination and ancillary diagnostic test established diagnosis. Ancillary test included orbital ultrasonography with fine needle aspiration of the mass, skull and thoracic radiographs, sometimes TC of the orbital cavity, histology from biopsy, surgical excision or post-mortem examination of the euthanized animals. The cause of exophthalmos is flogistic in 5 cases only, neoplastic in 9 animals, not well defined in 1 dog. In this patient there was a generalized hyperplasia involving all the salivary glands, including the zygomatic one; this dog presented temporary bilateral exophthalmos. Four of the examined dogs were affected by primary orbital neoplasia (2 adenocarcinoma of the zygomatic gland, 1 hemangiosarcoma, 1 malignant mesenchimal neoplasia); in 4 dogs the orbital neoplasm extended secondarily from adjacent structures (nasal adenocarcinoma, intraocular lymphoma, periocular schwannoma), in another one the orbit was affected by a metastatic neoplasia (renal lymphoma). The treatment was successful only in the 2 patients with orbital abscess and in 3 dogs with orbital cellulitis. In dogs exophthalmos is mostly consequent to neoplastic diseases with poor prognosis, because of the late presentation of affected animals and because of the malignant character of orbital neoplasms; a good prognosis can be express for the inflammatory orbital diseases
Color confinement and dual superconductivity of the vacuum. IV
SUMMARY A scaling analysis is made of the order parameter describing monopole
condensation at the deconfining transition of N_f=2 QCD around the chiral
point. In accordance with scaling properties of the specific heat, studied in a
previous paper, scaling is consistent with a first order transition. The status
of dual superconductivity of the vacuum as a mechanism of color confinement is
reviewed
Analyticity in theta on the lattice and the large volume limit of the topological susceptibility
Non-analyticity of QCD with a \theta term at \theta=0 may signal a
spontaneous breaking of both parity and time reversal invariance. We address
this issue by investigating the large volume limit of the topological
susceptibility in pure SU(3) gauge theory. We obtain an upper bound for
the symmetry breaking order parameter and, as a byproduct, the value
\chi=(173.4(+/- 0.5)(+/- 1.2)(+1.1 / -0.2) MeV)^4 at \beta=6 (a approx= 0.1
fermi). The errors are the statistical error from our data, the one derived
from the value used for \Lambda_L and an estimate of the systematic error
respectively
