No full textRIASSUNTO Nell'articolo viene presentato il percorso in e-learning “Le strade della ricerca bibliografica”, predisposto sperimentalmente sulla piattaforma Moodle, che costituisce la tesi del Master in e-learning (A.A. 2007-2008) svolto presso l’Università della Tuscia. Il progetto suddiviso in 4 moduli propone, grazie alle tecnologie del web 2.0, un orientamento più marcatamente costruttivista dell’educazione a distanza che rivede la logica dei singoli momenti formativi e unità didattiche, nell’ottica di un apprendimento utente-centrico. Tale orientamento pedagogico trova il suo punto di forza nella biblioteca intesa come punto (o porto?) di mediazione delle informazioni di qualità e centro dell’apprendimento informale, che deve necessariamente uscire dal ristretto ambito biblioteconomico, con l’intento di rinforzare alcune abilità indispensabili nel contesto di cittadinanza attiva di ciascun individuo e di lifelong learning. In particolare verranno presentati i moduli 3 e 4, espressamente dedicati alle pratiche di scrittura professionale, viste però nell’ottica della personalizzazione del processo formativo.Il personale della biblioteca dedicato a questi compiti, dovrà quindi possedere competenze specialistiche, sia nel campo delle tecnologie multimediali ma anche in quello dedicato alle varie tecniche di scrittura (scientifica, professionale, sul web…), assumendo ruoli di responsabilità come insegnante, tutor-facilitatore o formatore. SUMMARY The report focuses on the presentation of the e-learning course “The ways of bibliographic search”, loaded on the open source platform Moodle, with the aim to reach those users who, thus not being phisically present in library, ask for accurate and qualitative informations to be selected on internet and to be used in their scientific texts. The course provides for and develops a model of library seen as centre for informal learning, which has to go beyond the mere librarianship limits, with the purpose to strenghten some skills needful in the context of everyone’s active citizenship. Particularly, we are going to introduce the last modules, dedicated to professional writing, seen by the structivist point of view for an individualized training process and not like a mere delivery of learning contents

No full textSUMMARY The recently described (Carbohydr. Res. 2008, 43, 2545-2556) b-D-MaNAcp- (1→4)-b-D-Glcp thiophenyl glycosyl donor 3 was used in a-glycosylation reactions of OH-2 and OH-3 of the suitably protected p-MeO-benzyl a-L-rhamnopyranoside acceptors 7 and 8. The glycosylation of axial OH-2 of 7 took place in high yield (76%) and with good stereoselectivity (a/b = 3.4) leading to the protected trisaccharide a-11, corresponding to the repeating unit of Streptococcus pneumoniae 19F. The same reaction on equatorial OH-3 of acceptor 8 gave the trisaccharide a-15, constituent of the repeating unit of S. pneumoniae 19A, but in lower yield (41%) and without stereoselection (a/b = 1:1.3). Utilizing the introduced orthogonal protection of OH-1 and OH-4’’, the trisaccharide a-11 was transformed into a trisaccharide building block suitable for the synthesis of its phosphorylated oligomers

No full textSUMMARY Two detoxification mechanisms working in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissfloggii to cope with mercury toxicity were investigated. Initially, the effect of mercury on the intracellular pool of non-protein thiols was studied in exponentially growing cultures exposed to sub-toxic HgCl2 concentrations. T. weissfloggii cells responded by synthesizing metalbinding peptides, named phytochelatins (PCs), besides increasing the intracellular pool of glutathione and g-glutamylcysteine (g-EC). Intracellular Hg and PC concentrations increased with the Hg concentration in the culture medium, exhibiting a distinct dose-response relationship. However, considerations of the PCs-SH:Hg molar ratio suggest that also glutathione could be involved in the intracellular mercury sequestration. The time course of the non-protein thiol pool and Hg intracellular concentration shows that PCs, glutathione and g-EC represent a rapid cellular response to mercury, although their role in Hg detoxification seems to lose importance at longer incubation times. The occurrence of a process of reduction of Hg(II) to Hg° and subsequent production of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) was also investigated at lower Hg concentrations, at which the PC synthesis doesn’t seem to be involved. The significant (P<0.01) correlation between the cellular density in solution and the production of DGM suggests that this diatom is capable of directly producing DGM, both in light and dark conditions. This finding has been confirmed by the absence of DGM production in the culture media containing formaldehyde-killed cells. Finally, the relationship between these two different pathways of Hg detoxification is discussed

Versatile weighting strategies for a citation-based research evaluation model
No full textIn this paper, we first give a quick review of the most used numerical indicators for evaluating research, and then we present an integrated model for ranking scientific publications together with authors and journals. Our model relies on certain adiacency matrices obtained from the relations of citation, authorship and publication. These matrices are first normalized to obtain stochastic matrices and then are combined together by means of weights to form a suitable irreducible stochastic matrix whose dominant eigenvector provides the ranking. We discuss various strategies for choosing the weights and we show on large synthetic datasets how the choice of a weighting criteria rather than another can change the behavior of our ranking algorithm

Static and dynamic routing under the single-source Hose model
No full textThis paper addresses special cases of the robust network design problem under the single-source Hose model. We show that, in the case of unitary bounds, the static and the dynamic routing approaches lead to the same optimal solution, and this is true for both the splittable and the unspittable scenarios. As a consequence, in such a special case, the robust network design problem with (splittable) dynamic routing is polynomially solvable, whereas the problem is coNP-Hard under the general single-source Hose model. The results are based on the fact that the single-source Hose polyhedron with unitary bounds is dominated by a polynomial number of demand vectors. A feasible static routing can then be constructed as a convex combination of a set of routing templates which are feasible for the dominant demand vectors. The equivalence between static and dynamic routing is a consequence of those results, and it can also be generalized to some single-source Hose cases with non unitary bounds
