La "casa baraccata": un prototipo di architettura antisismica in epoca borbonica
The history of seismic activity is not known. The architectural heritage erased during an earthquake is no memory for the future. The contribution presents the results of research in the field of architecture in Italy after the earthquakes, from the end of the eighteenth century. Interesting knowledge of earthquake resistant techniques and patents

Optimized loading of an optical dipole trap for the production of Chromium BECs
We report on a strategy to maximize the number of chromium atoms transferred
from a magneto-optical trap into an optical trap through accumulation in
metastable states via strong optical pumping. We analyse how the number of
atoms in a chromium Bose Einstein condensate can be raised by a proper handling
of the metastable state populations. Four laser diodes have been implemented to
address the four levels that are populated during the MOT phase. The individual
importance of each state is specified. To stabilize two of our laser diode, we
have developed a simple ultrastable passive reference cavity whose long term
stability is better than 1 MHz
Experimental investigation of tunneling times using Bose-Einstein condensates
The time it takes a quantum system to complete a tunneling event (which in
the case of cross-barrier tunneling can be viewed as the time spent in a
classically forbidden area) is related to the time required for a state to
evolve to an orthogonal state, and an observation, i.e., a quantum mechanical
projection on a particular basis, is required to distinguish one state from
another. We have performed time-resolved measurements of Landau-Zener tunneling
of Bose-Einstein condensates in accelerated optical lattices, clearly resolving
the steplike time dependence of the band populations. The use of different
protocols enabled us to access the tunneling probability, in two different
bases, namely, the adiabatic basis and the diabatic basis. The adiabatic basis
corresponds to the eigenstates of the lattice, and the diabatic one to the
freeparticle momentum eigenstates. Our findings pave the way towards more
quantitative studies of the tunneling time for LZ transitions, which are of
current interest in the context of optimal quantum control and the quantum
speed limit
Reservoir Computing Forecasting of User Movements from RSS Mote-Class Sensors Measurement
Real-time, indoor user localization, although limited to the current user position, is of great practical importance in many Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications.
Moreover an accurate prediction of the user next position (even with a short advice) may open a number of new AAL applications that could timely provide the right services in the right place even before the user request them.
However, the problem of forecasting the user position is complicated due to the intrinsic difficulty of localization in indoor environments, and to the fact that different paths of the user may intersect at a given point, but they may end in different places.
We tackle with this problem by modeling the localization information stream obtained from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) using Recurrent Neural Networks implemented as efficient Echo State Networks (ESNs),
within the Reservoir Computing paradigm.
In particular, we have set up an experimental test-bed in which the WSN produces localization information of a user that moves along a number of different paths, and in which the ESN collects localization information to predict a future position of the user at some given mark points.
Our results show that, with an appropriate configuration of the ESN, the system reaches a good accuracy of the prediction also with a small WSN, and that the accuracy scales well with the WSN size. Furthermore, the accuracy is also reasonably robust to variations in the deployment of the sensors. For these reason our solution can be configured to meet the desired trade-off between cost and accuracy
{Java: Higher Order Programming in Java -- The Technical Complements
The paper contains the technical complements of the paper, of the same authors, published in the book "Java in Academia and Research", iConcept Press Ltd, 2011, that describes the extensions of Java 1.5 with Higher Order (H.O. for short) mechanisms. The present complements contain the complete tables of (i) The translation semantics of a form of closure for Java; (ii) The translation semantics of H.O. methods with mc\_parameters as arguments; (iii) The translation semantics of Java extended with the above mechanisms put together; (iv) Theorems, lemmas and proofs of all the properties of the mechanisms and of the semantics discussed in the paper.<br /

Engineering interband transport by time-dependent disorder
We show how the evolution of atoms in a tilted lattice can be changed and
controlled by phase noise on the lattice. Dependent on the characteristic
parameters of the noise, the interband transport can either be suppressed or
enhanced, which is of interest for high precision control in experimental
realization with Bose-Einstein condensates. The effect of the noise on the
survival probability in the ground band is summarized in a scaling plot
stressing the universality of our results
Quantum control in strongly driven optical lattices
Matter waves can be coherently and adiabatically loaded and controlled in
strongly driven optical lattices. This coherent control is used in order to
modify the modulus and the sign of the tunneling matrix element in the
tunneling Hamiltonian. Our findings pave the way for studies of driven quantum
systems and new methods for engineering Hamiltonians that are impossible to
realize with static techniques
