    Save up to 99% of your time in mapping validation

    Identifying semantic correspondences between different vocabularies has been recognized as a fundamental step towards achieving interoperability. Several manual and automatic techniques have been recently proposed. Fully manual approaches are very precise, but extremely costly. Conversely, automatic approaches tend to fail when domain specific background knowledge is needed. Consequently, they typically require a manual validation step. Yet, when the number of computed correspondences is very large, the validation phase can be very expensive. In order to reduce the problems above, we propose to compute the minimal set of correspondences, that we call the minimal mapping, which are sufficient to compute all the other ones. We show that by concentrating on such correspondences we can save up to 99% of the manual checks required for validation

    User Study on Emotion and Wearable Technology

    This paper contains the user study on human emotion displayed on wearable technology. The study tried to investigate the context and the means of a person who would like to express his/her emotions explicitly through wearable devices with the use of real-time generation of colors and patterns on them. Our study shows a very few people wanted their emotions to be exposed without knowing and most of them wanted their emotions to be expressed sometimes depending on specific context. We revealed the gap between the designer’s belief and what the user’s desire. Most of the participants did not appreciate the technology for displaying emotion in public and in some cases it seemed people’s awareness and imaginations are limited to this new phenomenon

    Modular dynamics in double cones

    We investigate the relation between the actions of Tomita-Takesaki modular operators for local von Neumann algebras in the vacuum for free massive and massless bosons in four dimensional Minkowskian spacetime. In particular, we prove a longstanding conjecture that says that the generators of the mentioned actions differ by a pseudo-differential operator of order zero. To get that, one needs a careful analysis of the interplay of the theories in the bulk and at the boundary of double cones. After introducing some technicalities, we prove the crucial result that the vacuum state for massive bosons in the bulk of a double cone restricts to a K.M.S. state at its boundary, and that the restriction of the algebra at the boundary does not depend anymore on the mass. The origin of such result lies in a careful treatment of classical Cauchy and Goursat problems for the Klein-Gordon equation as well as the application of known general mathematical techniques, concerning the interplay of algebraic structures related with the bulk and algebraic structures related with the boundary of the double cone, arising from QFT in curved spacetime. Our procedure gives explicit formulas for the modular group and its generator in terms of integral operators acting on symplectic space of solutions of massive Klein-Gordon Cauchy problem

    The Effect of History on Modeling Systems’ Performance: The Problem of the Demanding Lord

    In several concept attainment systems, ranging from recommendation systems to information filtering, a sliding window of learning instances has been used in the learning process to allow the learner to follow concepts that change over time. However, no analytic study has been performed on the relation between the size of the sliding window and the performance of a learning system. In this work, we present such an analytic model that describes the effect of the sliding window size on the prediction performance of a learning system based on iterative feedback. Using a signal-to-noise approach to model the learning ability of the underlying machine learning algorithms, we can provide good estimates of the average performance of a modeling system independently of the supervised machine learning algorithm employed. We experimentally validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology with detailed experiments using synthetic and real datasets, and a variety of learning algorithms, including Support Vector Machines, Naive Bayes, Nearest Neighbor and Decision Trees. The results validate the analysis and indicate very good estimation performance in different settings

    Relation Based Access Control: Logic and Policies

    The Web 2.0, GRID applications and more recently semantic desktop applications are bringing the Web to a situation where more and more data and metadata are shared and made available to large user groups. Things are further complicated by the highly unpredictable and autonomous dynamics of data, users, permissions and access control rules. For this novel scenario, a new access control model, Relation-Based Access Control (RelBAC) is proposed which allows subjects, objects and permissions to be dened independently. The key property which makes this possible is that permissions are modeled as relations between subjects and objects. RelBAC is formalized using the Description Logic ALCQIBO, which allows to perform policy management, e.g., Separation of Duties via automated reasoning

    Linguistic Phylogenetic Inference by PAM-like Matrices

    We apply to the task of linguistic phylogenetic inference a successful cognate identification learning model based on PAM-like matrices. We train our system and we employ the learned parameters for measuring the lexical distance between languages. We estimate phylogenetic trees using distance-based methods on an Indo-European database. Our results reproduce correctly all the established major language groups present in the dataset, are compatible with the Indo-European benchmark tree and include also some of the supported higher-level structures. We review and compare other studies reported in the literature with respect to recognised aspects of Indo-European history

    A faceted ontology for a semantic geo-catalogue

    Geo-spatial applications need to provide powerful search capabilities to support users in their daily activities. However, discovery services are often limited by only syntactically matching user terminology to metadata describing geographical resources. We report our work on the implementation of a geographical catalogue, and corresponding semantic extension, for the spatial data infrastructure (SDI) of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT) in Italy. We focus in particular to the semantic extension which is based on the adoption of the S-Match semantic matching tool and on the use of a faceted ontology codifying geographical domain specific knowledge. We finally report our experience in the integration of the faceted ontology with the multi-lingual geo-spatial ontology GeoWordNet

    Adopting Semantic Annotation Systems for Corporate Portal Management: a Telefonica Case Study

    Corporate portals make an important integral part of the enterprise infrastructure, facilitating the creation, sharing, discovery and consumption of enterprise assets through blogs, news, forums, documents and information in general. However, as the amount of data grows, it becomes much more difficult to access the right asset in the precise moment when it is needed. Annotation systems tried to address this problem to a certain extent by allowing the users to collaboratively annotate assets using tags such that these assets can be found more easily by reusing these tags in queries. However, this model often falls short due to mismatches in the vocabularies of different users, due to the use of synonymous, polysemous, more specific or general terms in tagging and searching, and so on. In this paper we: (a) provide an analysis of the corporate portal of the Telefonica group; (b) identify requirements for a semantics-enabled annotation system that is capable of addressing the above-mentioned shortcomings; (c) define a semantic annotation model that meets the requirements; (d) provide the details of the implementation of the annotation model for the Telefonica portal; and (e) provide an initial evaluation from the use of the semantic annotation system in the enterprise
