    Three-Dimensional Real-Time Localization of Subsurface Objects: From Theory To Experimental Validation

    In the last years, significant efforts have been made to develop unsupervised systems able to detect landmines or unexploded ordnances for both military and civilian purposes. Several solutions have been proposed based on different methodologies to face this problem in a fast and effective way [1]. In such a framework, learning‐by‐examples (LBE) techniques [2][3] have demonstrated to be promising solutions able to enable detection procedures efficient in terms of both resolution and required time/computational resources. This paper is aimed at describing the detection problem as a three‐dimensional classification process and analyzing its extension from theory to real experiments through a careful numerical analysis. Thanks to an integrated strategy based on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and a multi‐resolution approach, a multi‐resolution detection is obtained by means of an iterative zooming that considers only the regions characterized by an high probability to be occupied by the buried object. The arising time and computational saving allows the definition of an high‐resolution map despite the complexity of the three‐dimensional scenario at hand

    Al fine di valutare i prodotti della scienza giuridica italiana e renderli confrontabili con i lavori di altre aree scientifiche, alcuni attori istituzionali hanno proposto di classificare generi letterari (ad es., monografia, articolo, nota a sentenza ecc.), sedi editoriali e riviste. Una parte delle associazioni scientifiche dell’area giuridica ha preso una posizione comune nel “documento sulla valutazione” del 1° ottobre 2010 su metodi e criteri che dovvrebbero essere applicati da vari organismi istituzionali per differenti scopi. La pagine che seguono sono dedicate a svolgere rilievi critici a margine del documento e a rilevare che le tecnologie digitali (in particolare, il sistema dell’Accesso Aperto alla scienza) possono giocare un ruolo di primo piano nella valutazione dei prodotti della scienza giuridica. ENGLISH ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the scientific products of the Italian legal scholarship and make them comparable with the outputs in other scientific areas, some institutional actors have proposed to classify different scientific works (monographs, articles, notes etc.), publishers and journals. Part of learned societies in legal area have published a joint “Document on evaluation” (October 1, 2010) about methods and criteria that should be applied by various institutional organizations for several purposes. The aim of this paper is to offer a critique of that document, as well as to suggest that digital technologies (in particular, Open Access to science) might play a prominent role in the evaluation of products in the legal science field.     Dealing with Aspect-Limited Data Through an Innovative Microwave Imaging Multi-Source Technique: Potentialities and Limitations

    In this contribution, an innovative methodology aimed at increasing the amount of scattering data (avoiding further a�]priori assumptions on the investigation domain) is analyzed. According to the multi�]source (MS) approach, the investigation domain is illuminated by means of different probing sources, each of them characterized by a proper (and different) radiation pattern, to induce different scattering interactions able to "show" different "aspects" of the scatterer under test. Integrated with a multi�]view strategy and recurring to the iterative multi�]scaling procedure [Donelli et al., 2006], the exploitation of the "source diversity" (through the definition of a suitable multi�]source/multi�]view cost function) enlarges in a non�]negligible fashion the number of retrievable unknowns by enhancing the robustness of the imaging process with respect to the noise and the stability of the inversion procedure as well as the reconstruction accuracy. Moreover, the reduction of the ratio between dimension of the space of the unknowns and that of data implies a decreased sensitivity to false solutions [Isernia et al., 2001] leading to a more tractable optimization problem. A large number of numerical simulations confirm the effectiveness of the inversion strategy as well as its robustness with respect to noise on data. Moreover, the results of a comparative study with single�]source methodologies further point out the advantages and potentialities of the approach when dealing with aspect�]limited data acquisition setups

    An Iterative Procedure for Combining the Advantages of a Multi-Frequency and Multi-Resolution Inversion Algorithm

    Starting from the iterative multi�]scaling approach previously studied for monochromatic illuminations, two multi�]resolution strategies for dealing with multi�]frequency inverse scattering experiments have been developed. The first procedure is based on the integration of the iterative multi�]scaling algorithm into a frequency�]hopping reconstruction scheme, while in the second one the multi�]frequency data are simultaneously processed exploiting a multi�]resolution expansion of the problem unknowns. The numerical and the experimental analysis presented in this contribution concern with a preliminary assessment of the reconstruction effectiveness of the proposed approaches in comparison with a monochromatic multi�]step process.     Asymptotic behaviour of a class of nonlinear heat conduction problems with memory effects

    In this paper, we investigate the existence and uniqueness problem for the solutions to a class of semilinear stochastic Volterra equations which arise in the theory of heat conduction with memory eects, where the heat source depends on the solution via a dissipative term.     Plagio e creatività: un dialogo tra diritto e altri saperi

    Questo volume raccoglie gli atti di due seminari tenutisi il 21 e 22 aprile 2010 presso la Facoltà di Giurisprudenza di Trento. I due incontri sono parte integrante della prima serie di seminari del gruppo LawTech () del Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche dell’Università di Trento, serie concepita e organizzata dal collega Umberto Izzo assieme allo scrivente. L’idea fu quella di riunire attorno a un tavolo studiosi provenienti da diversi saperi e ragionare sul complesso e affascinante concetto di «plagio». Giuristi, studiosi di letteratura, artisti, musicisti, storici si confrontarono da diverse prospettive dando vita a un dibattito interdisciplinare estremamente ricco di riferimenti culturali e spunti di riflessione. Le relazioni presentate nell’aprile 2010 sono state rielaborate, completate da riferimenti bibliografici e raccolte nel volume che oggi vede la luce. La doppia pubblicazione, mediante licenza Creative Commons, sia in formato cartaceo (a pagamento), sia in Open Access (formato digitale gratuito disponibile sull’archivio istituzionale Unitn eprints e sul sito LawTech, alle pagine dedicate al tema del plagio ), completa l’opera di diffusione che aveva preso le mosse, all’indomani delle giornate seminariali, con la messa a disposizione del pubblico delle riprese dei lavori (si veda l’archivio video del sito Web Jus.unitn.it all’URL: )
