Access Control via Lightweight Ontologies
The paper presents Relation Based Access Control RelBAC, a model and a logic for access control which models communities, possibly nested, and resources, possibly organized inside complex file systems, as lightweight ontologies, and permissions as relations between subjects and objects. RelBAC allows us to represent expressive access control rules beyond the current state of the art, and to deal with the strong dynamics of subjects, objects and permissions which arise in Web 2.0 applications (e.g. social networks). Finally, as shown in the paper, using RelBAC, it becomes possible to reason about access control policies and, in particular to compute candidate permissions by matching subject ontologies (representing their interests) with resource ontologies (describing their characteristics). On the controllability of the semilinear heat equation with hysteresis
We study the null controllability problem for a semilinear parabolic equation, with hysteresis entering in the semilinearity. Under suitable hypotheses, we prove the controllability result and explicitly treat the cases where the hysteresis relationship is given by a Play or a Preisach operator
Unsupervised Learning of True Ranking Estimators using the Belief Function Framework
A variant of the ranking aggregation problem is considered in this work. The goal is to find an approximation of an unknown true ranking given a set of rankings. We devise a solution called Belief Ranking Estimator (BRE), based on the belief function framework that permits to represent beliefs on the correctness of the rankings position as well as uncertainty on the quality of the rankings from the subjective point of view of the expert. The results of a preliminary empirical comparison of BRE against baseline ranking estimators and state-of-the-art methods for ranking aggregation are shown and discussed
Equo compenso e diritto d'autore: un'analisi comparata = Fair Compensation and Author's Rights: a Comparative Analysis
ENGLISH ABSTRACT The object of this paper are the laws providing a fair compensation to copyright holders for the private copying of their works, such as songs and musical performances, films and books. These provisionlaws cover the unauthorized copies of copyrighted materials, typically made by the end users of the materials themselves for their private enjoyment, a notion that may eventually include an use of the copy extended to the circle of the closest relatives and friends.with t’s copying devices today so widely spread in the consumer market. The non-commercial nature (private copies are not sold nor usually made available to the public) and the limited scale of the reproduction activities mark this phenomenon, and make it easily distinguishable from the commercial “piracy”, i. e. the unauthorized serial copying made for commercial purposes. In order to grant an economic revenue to copyright holders, a levy is applied to copying devices and media sold to private consumers. The levy is paid by manufacturers and importers of the devices and is collected by copyright collecting societies. In the first chapterbriefly the social and juridical events that brought to promulgation of the first laws enacting a compensation for private copying of protected materials are briefly illustrated. The model was provided by the Federal German Republic and subsequently circulated in most of Europe. The final part of the chapter involves a comparison of the present laws of some EU Countries, under the principles established by directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament and of of the Council of 22 May 2001 on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society and by international treaties on copyright A study of the relevant laws of two non-European countries, United States of America and Canada, is included as well. The second chapter adopts a law and economics perspective to study the basic economic principles underlying the private copying and the established compensation model. It follows an analysis of some critical issues, such as the interaction between the existing compensatory schemes and technical protection measures and DRMs, and the effect of the levy on digital devices, in order to study the influence exerted by the private copying laws on new technologies and vice versa. The third and last chapter is dedicated to the study of the viability of the extension of the compensation scheme for private copying to the internet, and especially to file-sharing services, to evaluate the hypothetical possibility of a legalization of these services. Simpliciana Bellica: Grimmelshausens Kriegsdarstellung und ihre Rezeption: 1667-2006
The Thirty Years War is still often referred to as the Urkatastrophe of German history, the tragic beginning of modern Germany. Few individuals have contributed more to that tradition than Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. His first novel Simplicissimus Teutsch of 1668/69 marked the beginning of a ten-volume cycle of works completed in 1675. Often read simply as a picaresque account of the war and its horrors, it is in fact an extremely complex work.
[…]
Italo Michele Battafarano’s new study revisits this extraordinary work and explores its reception from the appearance of the first volume to 2006. The book is divided into three parts. The first part examines Grimmelshausen’s strategies as an author and puts his work in the context of other writings of the period, with particular reference to autobiographical elements and their relation to fictions and metafictions. The second part explores the relationship between key elements of
Grimmelshausen’s depiction of the Thirty Years War and the reality of the war. […] The third part […], devoted to Grimmelshausen’s reception, contains material that is genuinely new. According to Battafarano, the reception of Grimmelshausen’s work really began with the publication of the first critical edition by Adelbert von Keller in 1854, and specifically with the re-evaluation of the Thirty Years War in the wake of German unification in 1871. […] Battafarano then traces the work’s subsequent reception in the First and Second World Wars, finding Grimmelshausen cited as a precursor of pan-Germanism, as well as a proponent of every conceivable pro- and anti-war view. Two particularly fascinating sections examine French views of Simplicissimus in the 1940s and references to the work at the Nuremberg Trials. Finally, Battafarano finds Grimmelshausen invoked again in Godard’s Finis Germaniae (1991), in the German discussion of the Second Gulf War (1991), and in Grass’s 2006 autobiography. These chapters of Battafarano’s book are fascinating: suitably extended, they would have made an excellent book on their own.

Exploitation of Parasitic Smart Antennas in Wireless Sensor Networks
The integration of smart antennas in wireless sensor networks is a challenging and very attractive technical solution to improve the system capacity, the quality of service, and the power control. In this paper, some benefits coming from such an integration are experimentally assessed dealing with a set of test scenarios. Finally, some conclusions are discussed in order to point out current potentialities and limitations of the smart antennas integration to envisage future and possible advances
Analytic Design Techniques for MPT Antenna Arrays
Solar Power Satellites (SPS) represent one of the most interesting technological opportunities to provide large scale, environmentally clean and renewable energy to the Earth [1]‐[3]. A fundamental and critical component of SPSs is the Microwave Power Transmission (MPT) system, which is responsible for the delivery of the collected solar power to the ground rectenna [2]. Towards this end, the MPT array must exhibit a narrow main beam width (), a high beam efficiency (BWBE), and a low peak sidelobe level (). Moreover, reduced realization costs and weights are also necessary [3]. To reach these contrasting goals, several design techniques have been investigated including random methods [4] and hybrid deterministic‐random approaches [2][3]. On the contrary, well‐established design tools based on stochastic optimizers [5][6] are difficult to be employed, due to their high computational costs when dealing with large arrays as those of interest in SPS [3]
Multi-Resolution Approaches for Inverse Scattering Problems
In the framework of microwave imaging, inverse scattering techniques currently represent the state-of-the-art for the quantitative reconstruction of the region under test. In such a framework, multi‐resolution techniques have recently appeared in order to increase the effectiveness of the inversion procedure. To properly deal with the ill‐posedness characterizing their mathematical model and at the same time enhance the achievable spatial resolution, such a paper presents and discusses several multi‐resolution approaches based on the use of multi‐resolution and suitable basis functions for the problem unknowns
Numerical Validation and Experimental Results of a Multi-Resolution SVM-Based Classification Procedure for Breast Imaging
X‐Ray mammography is the principal technique for breast cancer screening in clinical practice. However, X‐ray mammography presents different drawbacks showing that alternative technologies are desirable. For example, the difficulty in detecting the breast tumors at the earlier stage, the destructive effects of the ionizing X‐rays on the irradiated tissues, low efficiency in dense breasts and with cancer near the chest wall. Other minor but still negative aspects are also the discomfort due to the breast compression and the expensive costs [1]
