    Advanced Manufacturing - Providing the Foundation for Sustainable Economic Growth

    Following up on recent announcements regarding the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, and the Report to the President on Ensuring American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing released last June by the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), this week the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has released a new National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing. The NSTC’s assessment of trends in advanced manufacturing in the U.S. revealed key opportunities where federal policy could accelerate progress and economic impact, and challenges potentially impacting the sustainability of advanced manufacturing ecosystems. Developing a strategy in advanced manufacturing is essential for identification of key gaps within the U.S. innovation cycle, and for effectively directing federal investments in order to leverage emerging market opportunities within the global economy. Key issues include the gap between research and development (R&D) activities and the scaled commercialization through technical innovations in domestic production. As such, the strategic plan presents an innovation policy that would address these gaps, along with the full lifecycle of technology, from fundamental science, to product concept, to scaled manufacturing. The strategy further involves close engagement and partnering between industry, academia, and govern¬ment at the national, state, and regional levels. Developed through a collaborative interagency process the plan notes the critical importance of advanced manufacturing on U.S. economic strength, global competitiveness, and national security. The strategic plan specifies five key inter-related objectives in which a large number of Federal agencies, coordinated through the NSTC, will have important roles to play in the implementation of the strategy.     Nanomanufacturing Innovations Impact Future Industry Roadmap Directions

    Nanomanufacturing innovations have made numerous impacts in various industry roadmaps with semiconductor, data storage, and aerospace being prime examples. For many of these examples, the impact of nanotechnology provides a marginal extension of the industry roadmap, as in the case of directed self-assembly (DSA) for bit patterned media magnetic data storage, and extending the utility of specific lithographic tools. In the case of new nanotechnology-enabled composite materials, the aerospace industry has already reaped significant benefit, and advances in the value chain will impact everything from sporting equipment to automobiles, thereby providing the promise of significant economic and societal benefit that typically follows such discussions on nanotechnology.     Protein Array Fabrication with E-jet Printing

    We demonstrate the feasibility of fabricate biosensors with direct protein printing without complicated processes at high resolution and area coverage. Printed single protein, streptavidin-fluorescein, binds to biotin labeled with fluorescent DNA without denaturation; therefore a fluorescence microscope can detect the printed droplets as shown in Figure 7.1(a). The standard deviation of the spot size and spacing is 7.26 % and 0.693%, respectively. The e-jet printing is capable to print large area, e.g., one inch size. Half droplets of streptavidin-Cy5 are printed in 15 minutes (Figure 7.1(b)). Four-inch size printing is also available. Moreover, we have developed the multi-syringe head [1]. The head prints multiple inks by rotation. Even complicated patterns of multiple proteins (e.g., peacock shown in Figure 7.1(c)) can be printed. Printed primary antibodies can be detected under a fluorescence microscopy by incubating with fluorescently-labeled secondary antibodies [2]. These capabilities show that the e-jet printer with the multi-syringe head has feasibility to make protein chips to detect multiple proteins at lower cost than the conventional chips

    The CHM conducted its sixth annual Nanotechnology Summer Institute for K12 science teachers at UMass Amherst, July 9-13, 2012. Twenty-seven teachers learned from an array of nanotechnology modules with many hands-on activities for the classroom, including a lesson on self assembly. A second Institute was added this year on July 17-19, 2012 for twenty-three teachers in Albany, NY. The teachers used these modules to develop curriculum plans that meet their particular teaching needs and satisfy state standards
