Do they dislike us as much as we think? Positive contact as a potential rectifier of meta-attitude inaccuracy in conflictual intergroup settings
Intergroup meta-attitude inaccuracy—the extent to which perceptions of outgroup views towards the ingroup diverge from what outgroup members actually think—fuels intergroup hostility, yet research on its precursors is scarce. Through four correlational studies, we examined whether and how intergroup contact predicts meta-attitude (in)accuracy in three conflict contexts: Black–White British in the United Kingdom (UK), Turks–Kurds in Turkey, and Catholics–Protestants in Northern Ireland. Regardless of context or status, all groups perceived themselves to be evaluated more negatively by the outgroup than they really were. Positive contact predicted increased meta-attitude accuracy (through increased shared reality) which was, in turn, associated with more positive outgroup attitudes. The role of negative contact and affective mediators (such as intergroup anxiety and fear) was not consistent and depended on group and context. The use of positive intergroup contact as a potential rectifier of overestimated negative meta-attitudes in conflict contexts is discussed
Using multi-orbit cyclic subspace codes for constructing optical orthogonal codes
We present a new application of multi-orbit cyclic subspace codes to construct large optical orthogonal codes, with the aid of the multiplicative structure of finite fields extensions. This approach is different from earlier approaches using combinatorial and additive (character sum) structures of finite fields. Consequently, we immediately obtain new classes of optical orthogonal codes with different parameters
Men In The Gym: Risks, Crises, And Tensions InNeoliberal Masculine Self-Making In Turkey
This thesis examines gym attendance among urban white-collar men in Turkey asa neoliberal–masculine self-making project. It explores how masculine neoliberalideals unfold in practice and what kinds of embodied selves they produce. Situatingthe research within debates on post-neoliberalism, it argues that white-collar men’sturn to the gym is an effort to restore their capacity to perform neoliberal subjectivities,eroded in Turkey amid neoliberalism-in-crisis and in parallel with globaltrends. Importantly, the analysis highlights the contested nature of this project,revealing crises, risks, and tensions—from bodily limits to temporal conflicts andperformances of hybrid masculinities entailing the risk of feminization. It showsthat men navigate the contradictions within this neoliberal self-making project byadopting the very logic of neoliberalism, rather than developing a critique of it.Moreover, this neoliberal navigation itself becomes the practice through which theyreconfigure themselves as neoliberal masculine subjects. The study thus reveals that the gym practices of white-collar men exemplify the endurance of neoliberal idealsof subjectification, even amid debates about possible end of neoliberalism
The Demystifıcation Of The Mystical Symbiosis: b Factionalism Among The Descendants Of Rûmî At TheTurn Of The Twentieth Century
This study delves into the intra-tarīqa schism that erupted in 1910 following thedismissal of ‘Abdülhalîm Çelebi and the subsequent appointment of Veled Çelebi asthe pōst-nişīn of the Konya Mevlânâ Lodge. This factional rivalry, which has so faronly been addressed descriptively in the available literature, warrants an in-depthanalysis within its proper historical context. The central government’s appointmentof Veled Çelebi was the end product of a prolonged and cumulative processin the nineteenth century, during which the intricate interplay between the stateapparatus and Sufi orders underwent a crucial reorientation. This transformativeprocess ultimately reconfigured the prevailing power dynamics, decisively shiftingthe balance in favor of the increasingly centralized and bureaucratized Ottomanadministrative structure. In other words, the modern state formation deterioratedthe traditional mystical autonomy. Nevertheless, the appointment procedure didnot operate smoothly. Unprecedented complications brought the state apparatus tothe brink of a perilous societal crisis in Konya. The supposedly arbitrary decisionto replace ‘Abdülhalîm Çelebi with Veled Çelebi was protested first by those occupyingeminent positions within the Mevlevî order. It then escalated into a relativelylarge-scale popular anti-government demonstration staged by various social segmentsinclusive of artisans, merchants, scholars (‘ulemā), and the gentry (eşrāf ). It is particularlynoteworthy that this discordant faction framed its discursive strategy inthe orbit of the libertarian principles promised by the proclamation of the SecondConstitutional Monarchy. Explicit construction of decomposable Jacobians
In this note we give explicit constructions of decomposable hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties over fields of characteristic 0. These include hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties that are isogenous to a product of two absolutely simple hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties, a square of a hyperelliptic Jacobian variety, and a product of four hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties three of which are of the same dimension. As an application, we produce families of hyperelliptic curves with infinitely many quadratic twists having at least two rational non-Weierstrass points, and families of quadruples of hyperelliptic curves together with infinitely many non-square d such that the quadratic twists of each of the curves by d possess at least one rational non-Weierstrass point
Towards extended reality in emergency response: guidelines and challenges for first responder friendly augmented interfaces
As Extended Reality (XR) technologies continue gaining popularity, various domains seek to integrate them into their workflows to enhance performance and user satisfaction. However, integrating XR technologies into emergency response presents unique challenges. Unlike other fields, such as healthcare, entertainment, or education, emergency response involves physically demanding environments and information-intensive tasks that first responders (FRs) must perform. Augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) present promising solutions for improving situational awareness and reducing the cognitive load of the FRs. However, limited research has focused on the specific needs of FRs. Moreover, existing studies investigating FR needs have primarily been conducted in controlled laboratory settings, revealing a significant gap in the literature concerning FR requirements in real-life scenarios. This work addresses this gap through a comprehensive user study with subject matter experts (SMEs) and FRs. User studies were conducted after two different real-life scenarios using AR HMDs. To further understand FR needs, we extensively reviewed the literature for similar studies that reported FR needs, explicitly focusing on studies including interviews with SMEs and FRs. Our findings identified key design guidelines for FR-friendly AR interfaces while also highlighting the direction for future research to improve the user experience of the FRs
Hydrothermally synthesized molybdenum disulfide nanoflakes: structural, electrical, and antenna-based gas sensing characteristics
The growing demand for real-time, low-power, and selective detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature (RT) presents a significant challenge for environmental monitoring. To address this, we propose a gas sensor platform that integrates molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based nanostructures with an RF antenna transducer exhibiting wireless-like capabilities, offering a promising approach for next-generation sensing technologies. MoS2 nanostructures were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method, and the impact of reaction duration on their structural and electrical properties was systematically investigated. The resulting nanostructures exhibited nanoflake (NF) morphology with an interatomic distance of 267 pm. X-ray diffraction confirmed the 2H–MoS2 phase, with improved crystallinity observed at longer reaction durations. FTIR analysis revealed Mo–S and Mo–O bonding, suggesting the coexistence of oxide phases alongside MoS2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirmed the presence of MoO3, MoO2, and MoS2, with phase ratios influenced by reaction duration. The synthesized materials were applied as sensing layers on dual-functional antenna transducers compatible with wireless sensor networks. The MoS2-based NF-coated sensor exhibited selective methanol detection in the 1000–8000 ppm range at RT, outperforming responses to other VOCs. Sensors with a higher MoS2/MoOx ratio showed a robust, linear response to methanol, achieving a detection limit of 57.5 ppm with excellent 30-day stability. Principal component analysis confirmed strong selectivity towards methanol, demonstrating effective VOC discrimination. This study highlights the critical role of the hydrothermal phase composition in tuning electrical performance and enhancing VOC detection for wireless sensing platforms based on RF antennas
Popular (dis)content with economic and political globalization in Turkey
Popular backlash against globalization in recent years has eroded governments’ commitment to economic openness, multilateralism and international organizations, and thus has contributed to the crisis of the United States-led Liberal International Order. Most research on such backlash has so far focused on developed countries, leaving gaps in our understanding of emerging and developing countries. This paper seeks to fill this gap by focusing on attitudes towards economic and political globalization in Turkey, an emerging middle power. We demonstrate that the Turkish public holds positive views on trade but negative views on international organizations. We also show that confidence in international organizations has declined over time, in parallel with an underlying pessimism towards the United States and the European Union, and elite messaging that has questioned the legitimacy of these organizations
The mixed-fleet vehicle routing problem with low emission zones
Many cities initiated new measures to restrict the access of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to urban centers because of increasing concerns in societies regarding carbon emissions and noise. A common restriction is referred to as low emission zone (LEZ) where ICEVs are either banned from entering or required to pay a daily toll to enter, whereas green vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs) are exempt from any access restriction and toll payment. Therefore, delivery companies operating in LEZs face new challenges to determine their fleet configurations and make route plans. In this paper, we tackle this issue by adopting an optimization-based approach, which deals with routing a mixed fleet of vehicles that serves customers located inside and outside the LEZ. The fleet consists of ICEVs and EVs that are allowed to recharge en route. The objective is to minimize total operating costs that comprises the charging cost of EVs, fuel cost of ICEVs, and tolls paid by ICEVs that enter the LEZ. We present the mixed integer linear programming formulation of the problem and use it to solve small-size instances. For solving large-size instances, we develop an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search method that benefits from new problem-specific mechanisms. An extensive experimental campaign is carried out on a set of benchmark instances derived from the literature and a case study based on real data is provided. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and provide managerial insights
A decomposition of cylindric partitions and cylindric partitions into distinct parts
We introduce the notion of pivot in a chain of skew diagrams in the context of cylindric partitions. Then, we show that cylindric partitions are in one-to-one correspondence with a pair consisting of an ordinary partition and a suitably restricted chain of pivots. Next, we show the general form of the generating function for cylindric partitions into distinct parts and give some examples. We prove part of a conjecture by Corteel, Dousse, and Uncu.
