Punishment between enduring critical issues and new challenges
This Forum seeks to explore, from an interdisciplinary perspective, key issues related to punishment, with a particular focus on the relationship between punishment and its narration – understood in a broad sense that encompasses multiple forms, including fictional narratives, biographical accounts, and worldviews conceived as theoretical frameworks shaping our practices of life. This approach allows for the identification, on the one hand, of the patterns of thought that have contributed to the normalization of certain entrenched critical aspects of punitive practices, and, on the other, of more recent conceptual frameworks that prompt philosophical and legal reflection on punishment to confront emerging challenges
Leveraging artificial intelligence for self-diagnosis systems: innovation in healthcare management
The application of artificial intelligence (AI) to provide individuals with self-diagnosis systems (typically available through mobile apps) is emerging as a new trend in healthcare. AI-based self-diagnosis systems have the potential to contribute to the digital transition by integrating digitalisation and healthcare, specifically understood as the well-being of the individual and society at large. These systems rely on the latest developments in digitalization and utilize algorithms that continuously learn from a large amount of clinical and medical data to optimize diagnoses based on the symptoms reported by users. If properly integrated with the services provided by healthcare systems, these innovations may improve service delivery for individuals. Specifically, AI-based self-diagnosis systems could play an important role from the perspective of the world’s aging societies, which will result in an increasing number of patients with specific healthcare needs. However, several challenges still need to be addressed, including evaluation of the correctness of diagnoses, privacy protection, the risk of dehumanisation of healthcare, and effects on the relationship between AI and healthcare professionals, creating the need for proper regulation. Overall, knowledge of AI-based self-diagnosis systems and their impacts remains limited, particularly from the consumer perspective. Individuals’ attitudes towards and (potential) use of self-diagnosis systems are still mostly unknown. This chapter systematically maps current knowledge on this topic and derives reflections and implications. The results of this analysis will be useful to several stakeholders, including healthcare decision-makers and policymakers. This work highlights the urgency of exploring how AI impacts the end user today. Examination of the studies presented reveals a large gap in knowledge about end-user perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs, not least the risk of misinterpretation of results rendered by AI-based self-diagnosis software. From a broader perspective, this chapter underscores the urgent need for in-depth studies of end-user use of these innovations. This has implications for advancing our understanding of the digital transition and its effects on individual and societal wellbeing
Soft Skills and Entrepreneurship: A Gender-Neutral Perspective from an Italian Narrative Study
This study explores the critical soft skills pertinent to entrepreneurial success among women, emphasizing the influence of gendered perception and barriers in the entrepreneurial landscape. This research argues for the emergent recognition of soft skills with such as limited access to resources, networks, and funding opportunities.
Based on a narrative research methodology, specifically the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET), the study engages with a diverse sample of male and female entrepreneurs to explore the nature and development of soft skills within a gendered context. Preliminary findings reveal collaboration, communication, adaptability, responsibility, and empathy as pivotal soft skills identified across genders, challenging traditional gender stereotypes in entrepreneurship. Moreover, the research elucidates three triggering paths by which these skills dynamically evolve, such as: organizational challenges, observational learning, and fostering individual skills. By framing soft skills as gender-neutral dynamic capabilities, the study contributes to advancing the discourse on gender in entrepreneurship, aiming to empower entrepreneurs through enhanced neutral-gendered skill dynamics

Wearable EEG-IMU based Framework for Investigating Neural Correlates of Motor-Cognitive Interaction in Multiple Sclerosis
: Investigating how cognitive and motor functions interact in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) is key to identifying disease-related alterations, yet technical challenges have long hindered this research. We introduce an innovative framework for dual-task (DT) assessment in PwMS, integrating wearable electroencephalography (EEG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors. The study involved 11 PwMS (6 males, 5 females; mean age: 58.5 ± 12.5 years), who performed the timed up and go (TUG) test under two conditions: a motor task as single-task (ST) and a motor-cognitive DT. A custom-made bracelet including an IMU and a wearable EEG device allowed the recording of motion data and brain activity during the tasks. The former was used for automatic trial segmentation through a hybrid convolutional neural network and a long-shortterm-memory model. This allowed the extraction of the EEG epoch during the task. Finally, the power spectral density in θ (4-8 Hz) and α (8-12 Hz) frequency bands was analyzed to extract mental workload. The proposed segmentation method achieved accurate estimations when compared to manual video-based labeling, with a very strong correlation R2=0.993 and mean-absolute-error of 0.383 s and 0.294 s for the ST and DT conditions, respectively. The EEG results showed increased mental workload during the DT condition (Wilcoxon signed-rank test p-value = 0.02). The planned inclusion of new participants will help to confirm the robustness of cortical activity patterns during DT performances in PwMS.Clinical relevance-The proposed experimental protocol represents a significant step forward to the understanding of neural correlates of cognitive-motor interaction, allowing the recording of cortical activity during walking. These findings could contribute to a better understanding of the association between DT performance and risk of falls in PwMS and help design specific and personalized rehabilitation interventions
Chemo-conization in Early-sTage cERvical caNcer >2 cm scheduled for fertilItY-sparing approach: an analysis of the ETERNITY project
Objective: To investigate the safety of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and conization in early-stage cervical cancer with a tumor size >2 cm using a fertility-sparing approach. Methods: The ETERNITY project is a retrospective, multi-institutional study that collected data from patients with early-stage cervical cancer undergoing fertility-sparing treatment. In the present study, we report the outcomes of stage IB2 to IB3 cervical cancer undergoing nodal assessment, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and conization. A propensity-matching algorithm was used to compare patients who underwent upfront radical surgery. Results: A total of 395 patients were included in the ETERNITY project. Among these, 25 underwent a fertility-sparing attempt with nodal assessment, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and conization. The median (range) patient age was 37 (24-41) years. Four (16%) patients with positive nodes required definitive chemo-radiation. Twenty-one (84%) patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Two (8%) patients with stable disease underwent radical hysterectomy, whereas the remaining 19 (76%) patients who achieved a clinical response underwent cervical conization. Three (12%) patients underwent radical hysterectomy owing to persistent positive margins, leaving 16 (64%) patients who completed the planned fertility-sparing attempt. After a median (range) follow-up of 36.2 (21.9-88) months, 3 recurrences occurred. Two patients with cervical recurrence underwent hysterectomy, while 1 patient who received definitive chemoradiotherapy owing to the presence of positive nodes developed distant recurrence. Regarding obstetric outcomes, 6 patients attempted to conceive, and 4 (66.7%) pregnancies were achieved (1 was achieved with assisted reproductive technology). In a propensity-matched group of patients who underwent upfront radical surgery, no differences in morbidity or survival rates were recorded. Conclusions: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by conization should be investigated in selected patients with cervical cancer who wish to preserve their childbearing potential. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the long-term safety and identify predictors of response
