"Sapere aude". Schiller's 'Letters to Prince von Augustenburg' and Kant's 'Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?'

    No full text
This chapter aims to contribute to the history of the reception of Kant's motto for the Enlightenment ("Sapere aude") by investigating the relationship between Schiller and Prince von Augustenburg as represented in the six letters the former wrote to the latter between February and December 1793. After tracing a short history of this neglected correspondence, it reconstructs Schiller's confrontation with Kant's philosophy with respect to the notion of 'Aufklärung' and the connected theme of the courage of knowledge. It also analyzes Georg Friedrich Meier's theory of prejudices in order to stress its importance for Kant's theory of enlightenment

A Better Algorithm for Converting an STNU into Minimal Dispatchable Form

    Get PDF
A Simple Temporal Network with Uncertainty (STNU) is a data structure for representing and reasoning about temporal constraints on activities, including those with uncertain durations. An STNU is dispatchable if it can be flexibly and efficiently executed in real time while guaranteeing that all relevant constraints are satisfied. Typically, dispatchability requires inserting conditional wait constraints, thereby forming an Extended STNU (ESTNU). The number of edges in an ESTNU affects the computational work that must be done during real-time execution. The MinDispESTNU problem is that of finding an equivalent dispatchable ESTNU having a minimal number of edges. Recent work presented an O(k n3)-time algorithm for solving the MinDispESTNU problem, where n is the number of timepoints and k is the number of actions with uncertain durations. A subsequent paper presented a faster O(n3)-time algorithm, but it has been shown to be incomplete. This paper presents a new O(mn+ n2 k+ n2 log n)-time algorithm for solving the MinDispESTNU problem, where m is the number of constraints in the network. The correctness of the algorithm is based on a novel theory of the canonical form of nested diamond structures. An empirical evaluation demonstrates the order-of-magnitude improvement in performance

Although numerous genetic variations have been associated with athletic profiles and performance, there is limited research on the real-world application of genetic insights in elite athlete training. The aim of this study is to present our 1-year training experience with a high-performing open water marathon swimmer, integrating genomic-based decision-making into training interventions. This case study involves a 23-year-old elite open water marathon swimmer whose primary goal was to qualify for the Absolute World Championships in 2024. The athlete had a consistent competitive history but sought optimized training strategies to enhance performance and secure a top position in national and international competitions. To personalize the training plan, twenty genetic polymorphisms were analyzed, guiding adjustments in strength training periodization and endurance capacity development. The interventions included tailored regimens aligned with the athlete's genetic predispositions, aiming to maximize physiological responses, recovery, and performance. Additionally, longitudinal monitoring of training load was conducted to assess adaptation and optimize workload distribution. The outcome was an improvement in athletic performance, highlighted by a top finish among compatriots and qualification for the Absolute World Championships. This case report demonstrates that genetic-based training, when integrated with structured load monitoring, can be an effective strategy to assist sports professionals in planning and optimizing training for high-performance athletes. This approach enhances precision in training interventions, providing valuable support for decision-making in elite sports preparation

Lettres fictives d'un humaniste. L'enseignement du grec à la Renaissance

    No full text

Investigating the effects of social and occupational isolation on personality structure: a focus on NEET young adults

    No full text
This project hypothesizes that social and occupational isolation may contribute to changes in personality structure, reducing its dimensionality and complexity. Although there is limited evidence to date, this study aims to explore this hypothesis by focusing on a population that exhibits characteristics fitting these criteria: young adults (aged between 16-36 years) categorized as NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training). Through a comprehensive set of surveys, data were collected on self-perceived employability, social and occupational factors, mental health, and personality dimensions, with the Hexaco Adjective Scale (Romano et al., 2023) employed as the primary assessment tool for personality traits. Additionally, we are developing the "NEET Index," a measure designed to capture key factors associated with social and occupational isolation. The NEET Index is hypothesized to hold predictive value for identifying individuals at risk of significant personality changes and labor market disengagement. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of how social and occupational contexts influence personality development, offering insights for targeted interventions aimed at promoting social inclusion and employability among NEET individuals. By addressing the interplay between isolation, personality, and employability, this research seeks to advance both theoretical knowledge and practical applications in the fields of psychology and labor market integration

Pain Management in Endodontics: a Narrative Review of Analgesic Use Preoperative, Intraoperative, and Postoperative

    No full text
Pain management in endodontics is a critical aspect of dental care, as the fear of endodontic pain often influences patient behavior and treatment outcomes. This narrative review examines the mechanisms, classification, and management strategies for pain associated with endodontic procedures, focusing on preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages. Preoperative pain, often caused by irreversible pulpitis or periapical infections, is exacerbated by inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins, which lower pain thresholds and hinder anesthetic efficacy. Intraoperative pain arises from difficulties in achieving adequate anesthesia, particularly in cases of pulpitis, while postoperative pain, peaking within 24 hours, is linked to inflammatory responses in periapical tissues. A range of pharmacological options is discussed, including NSAIDs, paracetamol, corticosteroids, and opioids, alongside their mechanisms of action, efficacy, and side effects. NSAIDs remain the first-line treatment due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, with ibuprofen demonstrating rapid and effective pain relief. Corticosteroids are highlighted for their ability to enhance anesthetic success and reduce inflammation, particularly in severe cases. Opioids and gabapentinoids are reserved for more severe or neuropathic pain, with cautious use due to potential dependency risks. The aim of this review is to emphasize the importance of tailored analgesic strategies that address the specific pain phase, patient characteristics, and procedural requirements. This comprehensive approach not only alleviates pain but also enhances the overall effectiveness of endodontic treatment, ensuring better patient outcomes and satisfaction

Life and death with Multiple Sclerosis: 20 years reappraisal of Verona prevalence cohort

    No full text
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition which results in increased mortality rates in people with MS compared to general population (GP). Recent data suggest a potential rise in survival over the past 20 years. Objectives: Evaluate the 20-year (2001-2021) survival rate and assess clinical factors associated with mortality among people with MS in Verona, Italy. Methods: We evaluated all the prevalent cases of MS residing in Verona, Italy at 31/12/2001. We retrospectively investigated the survival state of each patient at 31/12/2021 through the consultation of medical records to assess if patients were still on follow-up; for those with no records, we surveyed the death certificates from Verona municipality to verify death notification and date. The groups of survived and deceased patients were compared by sex, variables related to disease onset (age, clinical phenotype, number and type of functional systems involved, oligoclonal bands) or collected at prevalence date (clinical phenotype, disease duration, exposure to disease-modifying treatment, EDSS, annual relapse rate). Results: Of the 273 prevalent MS cases (189 females) as of 31/12/2001, 73 patients (48 females) had died by 31/12/2021. Mean life expectancy deviation of deceased MS patients was - 17.0±12.4 years compared to the GP. Deceased patients had a higher mean age at onset (36.4±12.5 vs 30.5±10.0 years; p<0.001) and a higher median EDSS score at prevalence date compared to survived patients (6.5, range 1.0-9.5 vs 2.0, range 0-8.0; p<0.001). The relapsing-remitting phenotype was more prevalent in survived patients both at onset (92.2%, p<0.001) and prevalence date (76.2%, p<0.001). Visual or sensory impairments were more common in survivors (82.5%; p=0.023). The survival rate was significantly lower in patients with primary progressive MS (PPMS) or an EDSS score greater than 3 at prevalence date. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a progressive disease type at prevalence date (PPMS or secondary progressive MS), longer disease duration at prevalence date and older age at onset were independently associated with lower survival. Conclusions: After 20 years from initial observation, the 2001 Verona cohort of MS prevalent cases showed a lower life expectancy compared to the GP. Higher age at disease onset, longer disease duration, and a progressive clinical course were independent risk factors of shorter survival of patients with MS
