    Max Horkheimer: Politics and Philosophy during His Exile

    Just as tensions were reaching their peak in the United States, Horkheimer and Adorno began a profound rethinking of their philosophical and social views. Most surprising is the positive assessment of democracy proposed in the version of the draft on anti-Semitism prepared one month before the host country's entry into the war. Here the Frankfurters were influenced by the political conditioning of the foundations and institutions that were supposed to fund their studies. The police surveillance itself, and the social and psychological mechanisms that it set in motion, can be seen as part of this dynamic. According to available sources, the security services did not interfere with American foundations to block grants for the Institute's research projects, however the investigations they conducted affected its political reputation and this had an impact on its theoretical work. When Horkheimer's inner circle became aware of the control, they linked it to the difficulties in obtaining grants and prepared an adaptable strategy of argument and communication that led, among other things, to a reformulation of the idea of democracy

    Upper-Body Pose-Based Gaze Estimation for Privacy-Preserving 3D Gaze Target Detection

    Gaze Target Detection (GTD), i.e., determining where a per-son is looking within a scene from an external viewpoint, is a challenging task, particularly in 3D space. Existing approaches heavily rely on ana-lyzing the person’s appearance, primarily focusing on their face to pre-dict the gaze target. This paper presents a novel approach to tackle this problem by utilizing the person’s upper-body pose and available depth maps to extract a 3D gaze direction and employing a multi-stage or an end-to-end pipeline to predict the gazed target. When predicted accu-rately, the human body pose can provide valuable information about the head pose, which is a good approximation of the gaze direction, as well as the position of the arms and hands, which are linked to the activ-ity the person is performing and the objects they are likely focusing on. Consequently, in addition to performing gaze estimation in 3D, we are also able to perform GTD simultaneously. We demonstrate state-of-the-art results on the most comprehensive publicly accessible 3D gaze target detection dataset without requiring images of the person’s face, thus pro-moting privacy preservation in various application contexts.     Cibercrimen y uso ilícito de la inteligencia artificial: retos y desafíos del Derecho penal

    En este trabajo se analizará, en primer lugar, la evolución de la legislación penal española e italiana contra la criminalidad informática (computer crime) y el proceso de aproximación en la regulación de los ciberdelitos (apartados 2 y 2.1). En segundo lugar, se centrará la atención en el cibercrimen y en las manifestaciones más frecuentes del AI-Crime (apartado 3). De esta manera, será posible comprobar si (algunos de) los delitos cibernéticos vigentes en España e Italia pueden aplicarse a las más recientes amenazas llevadas a cabo mediante el uso ilícito de la inteligencia artificial. En este sentido, se analizará la relevancia penal que puede tener el uso de la IA como modalidad de ejecución de un hecho ilícito (apartado 3.1) y las agresiones a los sistemas de inteligencia artificial (apartado 3.2). Como conclusión, se formularán algunas consideraciones finales sobre los nuevos retos del Derecho penal en la lucha contrael AI-Crime (apartado 4)

    A modified Delphi consensus statement on the role of biopsy in small renal masses

    Objective: To understand the variable utilisation of diagnostic biopsy for small renal masses (SRM) across the urology community, we worked with expert clinicians and patients to produce a consensus statement on the role of biopsy and to identify research gaps. Methods: In phase I, qualitative interviews were performed to identify potential statements on the role of biopsy and research gaps. In phase II, an expert panel including patients scored statements on a 9-point scale through a modified Delphi process involving three rounds of web-based surveys. Consensus was considered to have been reached when 70% of participants scored a statement greater than or equal to seven. Panel members could propose additional statements for consideration after the first round. Following the second round, a moderation meeting was held to discuss statements where threshold of agreement was not met. Results: In total, 35 participants were involved in this project and consisted of 23 clinicians and 12 patients, with 29 participants completing all three rounds. Overall, 18 statements reached consensus, 11 of which pertained to when and how a biopsy should be used in SRM management and 7 research recommendations to improve the evidence base for biopsy use. Conclusions and clinical implications: This Delphi consensus statement, co-produced by patients and clinicians, provides best-practice guidance on the current role of renal tumour biopsy, including offering biopsy prior to active treatment if the outcome would affect management and offering a second attempt should the first biopsy be non-diagnostic. Priority areas for future research included studies to evaluate how a biopsy affects choice of treatment and patient anxiety

    Platysma Prominence: Review and Expert Analysis of Clinical Presentation, Burden, and Treatment Considerations

    Background:Platysma prominence (PP) is a sign of aging in the lower face and neck characterized primarily by a blunting of the jawline and the presence of vertical banding along the anterior and posterior margins of the muscle on one or both sides of the neck. The aim of this review was to combine findings from the literature on topics relevant to PP with expert perspective to help guide clinical decision-making in assessment and treatment.Methods:A review of the literature focusing on platysma muscle anatomy and function; PP signs, characteristics, causes, clinical severity, and aesthetic and psychosocial effects; and treatment options for PP was performed and summarized. Expert clinical perspectives of these findings elucidated from the authors' experience were used to develop considerations for the evaluation and treatment of PP.Results:PP is an aesthetically undesirable condition that is bothersome to affected individuals and has negative effects on quality of life and psychological and emotional well-being. Knowledge of platysma muscle anatomy, proper patient assessment, and considerations in the use of onabotulinumtoxinA for the treatment of PP, including selection of the appropriate candidates and careful dosing and injection techniques, can produce consistent results with limited adverse events, potentially enhancing the patient's quality of life.Conclusions:PP is a bothersome condition with a detrimental impact on patient quality of life and psychological and emotional well-being. OnabotulinumtoxinA is a nonsurgical treatment option with a record of safe, consistent results in treating PP

    Topical Spermidine Hyaluronate (Spd-HA) in Vulvovaginal Atrophy: A Preliminary Study

    Background and Objectives: Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), previously termed vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), is a prevalent hypoestrogenic condition characterized by genital, sexual, and urinary symptoms. Although hormonal therapies are effective, many women are unwilling or unsuitable to use them. Spermidine hyaluronate (Spd-HA) has been reported to be effective in the treatment of vulvodynia and is currently under investigation for stress urinary incontinence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Spd-HA gel on the signs and symptoms of GSM. Materials and Methods: Five postmenopausal women with GSM presenting with vulvovaginal atrophy were enrolled in this prospective, single-arm, pilot study. They applied Spd-HA gel locally for eight weeks (three times/week for the first 4 weeks, followed by two times/week for the next 4 weeks). Vulvovaginal signs and symptoms were assessed at baseline (V1), 4 weeks (V2), and 8 weeks (V3) using the most bothersome symptoms (MBS), vaginal health index (VHI), and maturation index (MI) and value (MV). Results: Spd-HA gel was associated with MBS score improvement from baseline to week 8 [from (5.00 +/- 2.00) to (1.60 +/- 1.52)]. VHI score and MI improved from baseline to week 8. Compared to literature data, improvement in MVs obtained in women who received Spd-HA was greater than those obtained by hydrating products, but lower than those observed in women with estrogen or prasterone therapy. Conclusions: This preliminary experience suggests that Spd-HA gel ameliorates the vulvovaginal component of GSM. It may represent a promising non-hormonal option for women with GSM who are unwilling or unsuitable to receive hormonal therapy, warranting confirmation in larger controlled trials

    The Effects of Physical Activity Programs with Nutritional Supplementation in Children Until 12 Years Old Recruited from Schools: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Background/Objectives: Combined physical activity and nutritional interventions may produce synergistic effects on child development, but evidence from school-based programs is still limited. This systematic review investigated the impact of physical activity programs with simultaneous nutritional supplementation in school-aged children. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across five databases (PubMed, ProQuest, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus) up to June 2025. Randomized controlled trials examining combined physical activity and nutritional supplementation interventions in children aged 5-12 years recruited from schools were included. Methodological quality was rated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Results: Thirteen studies (n = 3967 participants) were eligible, with program lengths ranging from 2 weeks to 24 months. Methodological quality ranged from fair to good (PEDro scores: 4 to 7/10). Combined interventions showed greater benefits than single interventions. For bone health, 2-3% higher increases in bone mineral content at loaded sites were reported with exercise combined with calcium supplementation. Body composition improvements included significant reductions in fat mass and increases in fat-free mass, with effects most pronounced in girls and slow-growing children. Motor performance, academic achievement, and sleep quality also improved with combined approaches. Effects were consistently greatest in children with baseline micronutrient deficiencies or slower growth velocity. Conclusions: School-based programs combining moderate-to-high impact physical activity with targeted nutritional supplementation yield synergistic health benefits in children. Brief interventions (2-3 sessions/week, <= 60 min) appear sufficient when adequate micronutrient provision is ensured, supporting implementation feasibility within educational settings
