    No full text

Role of the Dentist in the Management of Burning Mouth Syndrome: Preliminary Observational Study and Literature Review

    No full text
The aims of this observational study are the following: to identify diagnosis and treatment strategies for Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) according to current literature; to compare data collected in a sample of patients suffering from BMS with the data reported in the literature; to highlight the role of the dentist in the management of BMS. A sample of 10 consecutively treated patients was recruited to fulfill the research inquiries. All patients received a BMS diagnosis and underwent medical and psychological therapy. The patients were asked to evaluate their pain levels before and after treatment, filling in a Visual Analogic Scale and a Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NRS) to rate to what extent the treatment had been successful. A literature review was conducted on Pubmed and Cochrane using different keyword combinations. In the study group, 9/10 patients declared that the therapy gave satisfactory results. 4/10 patients reported benefit from the prescription of Clonazepam. Twelve articles were selected in the literature review. The review of literature presented in this work does not offer unequivocal evidence of Burning Mouth Syndrome diagnosis and treatment. Results obtained from the sample of 10 patients cannot be considered useful evidence to establish a clinical protocol

    Caring, Emotion, Optimization

    No full text
In some contexts of the current society, the optimization of the processes, that is considered at the basis of both greater productivity and a more efficient time schedule, seems to be connected to the capacity to regulate and manage emotions. Nevertheless, a phenomenological analysis of emotional life, suggests that emotions cannot be controlled in a managerial way; instead, it is possible to act in a transformative way on them by engaging in a continuous and, sometimes, difficult exercise of self-reflection, aimed at bringing to light the cognitive contents that underlie them. The philosophical (Nussbaum, 2001) and psychological (Oatley, 1992) assumption from which we start in order to develop our reasoning, is that emotions are epiphenomena of the cognitive activity, therefore they are an affective experience with an intimate conceptual core. This assumption is the ground for the development of a theory of education as caring for the self that engages the person in a practice of emotional self-understanding. This practice requires the subject to adopt a phenomenological method (Husserl, 1913; Stein, 1917-1933/1991; Arendt, 1978; Mortari, 2008) for describing the flow of the mind’s life and then to carry out an analytical reflection on the collected mental data

GPT-4 generates accurate and readable patient education materials aligned with current oncological guidelines: A randomized assessment

    No full text
Introduction and aim Guideline-based patient educational materials (PEMs) empower patients and reduce misinformation, but require frequent updates and must be adapted to the readability level of patients. The aim is to assess whether generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can provide readable, accurate, and up-to-date PEMs that can be subsequently translated into multiple languages for broad dissemination. Study design and methods The European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines for prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancer were used as the knowledge base for GPT-4 to generate PEMs. Additionally, the PEMs were translated into five commonly spoken languages within the European Union (EU). The study was conducted through a single-blinded, online randomized assessment survey. After an initial pilot assessment of the GenAI-generated PEMs, thirty-two members of the Young Academic Urologists (YAU) groups evaluated the accuracy, completeness, and clarity of the original versus GPT-generated PEMs. The translation assessment involved two native speakers from different YAU groups for each language: Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The primary outcomes were readability, accuracy, completeness, faithfulness, and clarity. Readability was measured using Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease (FKRE), Flesch Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Gunning Fog (GFS) scores and Smog (SI), Coleman Liau (CLI), Automated Readability (ARI) indexes. Accuracy, completeness, faithfulness, and clarity were rated on a 5-item Likert scale. Results The mean time to create layperson PEMs based on the latest guideline by GPT-4 was 52.1 seconds. The readability scores for the 8 original PEMs were lower than for the 8 GPT-4-generated PEMs (Mean FKRE: 43.5 vs. 70.8; p < .001). The required reading education levels were higher for original PEMs compared to GPT-4 generated PEMs (Mean FKGL: 11.6 vs. 6.1; p < .001). For all urological localized cancers, the original PEMs were not significantly different from the GPT-4 generated PEMs in accuracy, completeness, and clarity. Similarly, no differences were observed for metastatic cancers. Translations of GPT-generated PEMs were rated as faithful in 77.5% of cases and clear in 67.5% of cases. Conclusions and relevance GPT-4 generated PEMs have better readability levels compared to original PEMs while maintaining similar accuracy, completeness, and clarity. The use of GenAI's information extraction and language capabilities, integrated with human oversight, can significantly reduce the workload and ensure up-to-date and accurate PEMs. Patient summary Some cancer facts made for patients can be hard to read or not in the right words for those with prostate, bladder, kidney, or testicular cancer. This study used AI to quickly make short and easy-to-read content from trusted facts. Doctors checked the AI content and found that they were just as accurate, complete, and clear as the original text made for patients. They also worked well in many languages. This AI tool can assist providers in making it easier for patients to understand their cancer and the best care they can get

Neutrophils restricted contribution of CCRL2 genetic variants to COVID-19 severity

: The 3p21.31 locus is the most robust genomic region associated with COVID-19 severity. This locus contains a main chemokine receptor (CKR) cluster. We tested expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) targeting the 3p21.31 CKR cluster linked to COVID-19 hospitalization in Europeans from the COVID-19 HGI meta-analysis. Among these, CCRL2, a key regulator of neutrophil trafficking, was targeted by neutrophil-restricted eQTLs. We confirmed these eQTLs in an Italian COVID-19 cohort. Haplotype analysis revealed a link between an increased CCRL2 expression and COVID-19 severity and hospitalization. By the exposure of neutrophils to a TLR8 ligand, reflecting a viral infection, we revealed specific chromatin domains within the 3p21.31 locus exclusive to neutrophils. In addition, the identified variants mapped within these regions altered the binding motif of neutrophils-expressed transcription factors. These results support that CCRL2 eQTL variants contribute to the risk of severe COVID-19 by selectively affecting neutrophil functions

Unleashing economic growth through circular business models and innovation networks: a configurational analysis

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of combining circular business models and innovation networks on economic growth. Using data collected in 2017 through a collaboration between Legambiente and the University of Padova, we empirically examine 47 Italian firms engaged in circular business practices. Employing fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), we explore various pathways to economic growth. Surprisingly, having an extensive collaboration network or relying on in-depth partnerships isn't always essential for success; in some cases, they are ineffective. Additionally, we find that circular practices can be effective when adopted independently, with a trade-off between reuse/recycling and selling waste to other companies. This study offers practical insights for managers in developing a thriving circular economy business ecosystem, emphasising the interplay between circular business practices and innovation networks. It contributes to moving beyond circular stagnation and utopian ideals, providing actionable recommendations for businesses aiming to achieve economic growth through circular strategies

The Origins of the Firm: Theoretical Insights and Empirical Evidence from Italian SMEs - A Preliminary Study

    No full text
This paper explores the fundamental question of why firms exist by examining the theoretical and psychological drivers behind their emergence. Building on the foundational insights from behavioral and entrepreneurial perspectives, particularly the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Theory of Entrepreneurial Orientation, the paper also reviews alternative theoretical explanations from Ronald Coase’s Theory of Transaction Costs to Property Rights Theory, Resource-based View, and Evolutionary Economics. Using a quantitative methodology based on a sample of 111 Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), this study empirically explores the underlying motivations behind firm creation. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to test the theoretical relationships. The findings indicate that attitude and subjective norms significantly influence the intention to establish a firm, whereas resource-based capabilities and perceived behavioral control little or no substantial effect. Through historical examples, theoretical frameworks, and empirical testing, the article concludes that firms emerge not only as efficient solutions to coordination problems but also as institutional responses to social, psychological, and entrepreneurial stimuli
