Financial expert CEOs: Evidence from purchase price allocation
Drawing from the Upper Echelons Theory (UET), this study assesses how firms’ accounting outcomes at the
transaction level are influenced by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)’s individual characteristic of financial
expertise and managerial status from structural and relational power. We use Purchase Price Allocation (PPA) as
a key empirical context, given its technical nature. Utilizing a proprietary dataset that includes information on
business combination and key officers’ characteristics, we employ multivariate analysis to explore the rela-
tionship between the CEO financial expertise and reporting transparency, and the moderating role of the CEO’s
power. Our findings indicate that firms led by financial expert CEOs are more likely to allocate the purchase price
to specific assets. Furthermore, CEOs’ structural power enhances the impact of financial expertise on PPA de-
cisions, whereas relational power does not support a similar effect. Robustness checks confirm the validity of our
results. This research contributes to the accounting literature by extending UET predictions, highlighting that
accounting outcomes are systematically influenced by CEO financial expertise and illustrating how different
managerial status within corporate governance affect financial reporting transparency
Prospective Validation of ATA Risk Score for Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: An ITCO Real-World Study
Context The risk of recurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) smaller than 1 cm (microPTC) is low. Predictors of disease persistence in microPTC are still unclear. Objective To compare the clinical and pathological characteristics of microPTCs with macrocarcinomas (PTC > 1 cm), identifying the predictors of biochemical and structural incomplete response 1 year after initial treatment in microPTC. Methods We included patients consecutively enrolled in the Italian Thyroid Cancer Observatory (NCT04031339), and selected patients with a histological diagnosis of PTC for whom complete pathological, clinical, treatment information, and results at the 1-year follow-up visits were available. Results Among 5038 patients in the cohort, 2345 (46.5%) had a microPTC. Patients with microPTCs had tumors with more indolent pathological features: only 3% of patients were classified as high risk according to the American Thyroid Association (ATA) risk stratification system for persistent or recurrent disease and 1% had distant metastases at diagnosis. MicroPTCs had a significantly better outcome: only 5% had a biochemical response and 2.3% a structural incomplete (SIR) response. Distant metastases at diagnosis were the best predictor of SIR in microPTCs (OR 5.13, 95% CI 1.11-23.73, P = .04). In a subgroup of 925 patients treated by total thyroidectomy and radioiodine treatment, the best predictor of SIR was the ATA high risk (OR 5.47, 95% CI 1.42-21.04, P = .01). Conclusion Our study confirms the favorable initial outcome of microPTC in a large series. We demonstrate that the ATA risk classification is reliable in predicting biochemical and structural persistence in patients with microPTC. Distant metastases, although rare, remain the best predictor of structural persistence at 1-year follow-up. These findings underscore the importance of tailored management strategies based on comprehensive risk stratification, rather than solely on tumor size
Hancock, 2014) o da sovraccarico funzionale (De Bartolomeo, et al.2016;
Emicizumab in Type 3 von Willebrand Disease: Report of a Case with an Alloantibody and Literature Review
Type 3 von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most severe form of VWD, is an inherited recessive bleeding disorder caused by the complete deficiency of von Willebrand factor (VWF). The reported prevalence is 1 per million but varies worldwide according to the frequency of consanguineous marriages. The clinical phenotype is characterized not only by mucocutaneous bleedings, but also by hemarthroses and muscle hematoma, as in patients with moderate hemophilia. Long-term prophylaxis with factor (F)VIII/VWF concentrates is recommended in patients with a history of severe and frequent bleeds. A rare complication of replacement therapy is the development of alloantibodies against VWF, with the consequences of an ineffective therapy and risk of anaphylactic reactions upon treatment. Emicizumab is the first bispecific monoclonal antibody that mimics FVIII coagulant activity and is approved for prophylaxis of bleeding in patients with inherited hemophilia A with or without inhibitors and recently also for acquired hemophilia. In this manuscript we report and discuss available data in the literature on the use of emicizumab in type 3 VWD and describe the case of a female patient with type 3 VWD with a history of alloantibodies against VWF and posttransfusion anaphylaxis, recently and successfully put on off-label prophylaxis with emicizumab
Boolean rigs
Semirings of partial Boolean-valued functions arise in Bishop's approach to constructive measure theory. In this paper, we treat such semirings axiomatically. Lifting the corresponding result for Boolean rings, we prove a representation theorem a la Stone that aligns with the intended semantics. Moreover, among the semirings at hand, we determine the order of those that are free over finitely many generators
The ultrasonographic spectrum of toe dactylitis in psoriatic arthritis: a descriptive analysis
INTRODUCTION: Dactylitis is a hallmark of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). While its assessment is clinical, recently musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) has been applied to its monitoring. However, the evidence on MSUS application for toe dactylitis is limited. The aim of this study is to characterize the ultrasonographic features of toe dactylitis in PsA.
METHOD: Patients with PsA and painful toe dactylitis were retrospectively identified from clinical records. Demographic and clinical variables were analyzed. Ultrasound images of the affected toe, allowing the assessment of grey scale (GS) and power Doppler (PD) were collected, to evaluate tenosynovitis, soft tissue oedema (STO), synovitis of metatarsophalangeal (MTP), proximal and distal interphalangeal (PIP, DIP) joints (all graded 0-3), and peritendonitis (PTI) at the MTP and PIP (graded 0-1). Clinical and ultrasonographic features were analyzed through descriptive statistics.
RESULTS: The study included 26 patients (30 toes) of which 9 (34.5\%) females, with mean (sd) age of 46.8 (11.73). All but one patient had an oligoarticular phenotype. Tenosynovitis was the most frequent lesion, with GS abnormalities in 27/30 toes (90\%) and PD in 25/30 (83.3\%). STO was common (GS in 28/30 (93.33\%) toes and PD in 20/30 (66.66\%)). Synovitis was less common (63.33\%, 46.66\% and 33.33\% of MTPs, PIPs and DIPs, respectively), while PTI was uncommon, with no patient presenting with PD.
CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound showed different elementary lesions in toe dactylitis confirming the complexity of this manifestation also at foot. These findings represent a first step toward the development of further imaging studies assessing toe dactylitis in PsA. Key Points • Tenosynovitis and soft tissue oedema were the most common ultrasonographic elementary lesion in acute toe dactylitis in psoriatic arthritis. • Synovitis was less frequent and peritendonitis was very uncommon. • Musculoskeletal ultrasound confirms the presence of multiple lesions in painful toe dactylitis, confirming the complexity of this manifestation
The body as a vector of knowledge: the psychomotor approach in the development of the school-age child
Human learning is closely linked to sensory and motor experiences. The body, with its movement, is not
only a vehicle for exploring the world, but also an essential tool for the construction of knowledge
(Barsalou, 2008; Wilson, 2002;). The most recent neuroscientific and pedagogical research supports the
extent to which body plays, and motor activity plays a crucial role in the harmonious development of a
child’s cognitive and relational processes (Goodway et al., 2019). Indeed, through the body in action, not
only motor skills can be improved, but complex cognitive skills such as problem solving, creativity and
critical thinking can be enhanced (Gardner, 1993; Kontra et al., 2012). From this point of view, the
psychomotor approach, working on the enhancement of perceptual integration, motor control and tactile,
visual and proprioceptive exploration, is configured as an elective didactic methodology, with significant
implications for the child’s learning and general wellbeing, especially at the entrance to primary school.
The pleasantness and naturalness of spontaneous motor investment builds a multidimensional bridge
between physical experience and learning processes (Impara, 2019), fostering physical literacy and play
literacy, and stimulating skills such as coordination and socialization (Colella, et al. 2024). The present
contribution aims to explore the implications and results of the possible use of play-experiential strategies
included within the curricular teaching practices in the first two years of primary school, in order to
recognise the body, in accordance with the scientific literature of reference, as a primary instrument of
knowledge. The possible educational implementation of motor workshops designed according to a
psychomotor model, will require a sensitive and articulated design capable of overcoming the prevailing
fragmentary logic of classical interventions, in favour of methodological variants characterized by a
flexible, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary vision
