Disasters are recognized as one of the most important causes of disability or death in developing countries. About half of the incidents occur in workers who work on a paid day (49.7%). Chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between severity of injury (P = 0.163) and education (P = 0.175), which had no significant relationship. 67% of the deaths were in the morning shift, and 55.7% had death in graduate school. Conclusion: Most of the injuries in the studied cases were fracture and depression. Most accidents occurred in load carrying, welding and Reinforcement. National Consensus on Diagnosis andManagement Guidelines for Primary Immunodeficiency

    No full text
Primary immunodeficiency (PID) is a group of more than 400 distinct genetic disorders affecting both children and adults. As signs and symptoms of PID are usually heterogeneous and unspecific, based on the available human resources and laboratory facilities, diagnosis and follow-up of these patients can be challenging. In line with this notion, management and treatment of PID are practiced divergently in different PID centers. In order to reach a distinct national protocol and given the little evidence on appropriate or universal guidelines to improve the current status of management of the disease, the Iranian PID network designed a consensus suitable for regional resources. This review summarizes this PID guideline based on the importance of different clinical complications and the level of medical authority visiting those at the first line. Further, for each complication, appropriate interventions are mentioned to improve the approach

Background & Aims: Bad news is one of the major challenges for cancer patients. The present study was conducted to investigate the attitudes of cancer patients and their families toward the diagnosis of cancer admitted to hospitals affiliated to Ardebil University of Medical sciences. Materials & Methods: A total of 196 cancer patients and their families (including 62 family members of cancer patients, 76 adult patients and 58 child patients) who were admitted to the oncology wards of Imam and Bu-Ali hospitals in Ardebil were selected by convenient sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing six dimensions, including the suitability of the person, the time and the place for delivering the bad news, amount of information disclosed, acceptance, and factors affecting the delivery of bad news, plus a section on demographic details. The questionnaire was completed by the researchers through interviews. Results: Significant differences were found between age and attitude in all three groups regarding acceptance of the bad news (p=0.045). In the dimension of suitability of time for delivering bad news, children’s families had a better attitude than families of adult patients and adult patients themselves (intergroup difference:0.017), but they had a poorer attitude than the other two groups with regard to factors affecting delivery of bad news (intergroup difference: 0.007). Female patients had poorer attitude toward the place for delivery of bad news (p=0.046). Family members of adult patients with higher education showed poorer attitude toward the bearer of the bad news (p=0.009), and those with higher income had a better attitude toward timing of the bad news (p=0.046). Those living in privately owned houses had a better attitude toward suitability of the place for the delivery of bad news (p=0.043) and the amount of information provided (p=0.043). Families of patients with acute diseases showed better attitudes toward the amount of information provided (p=0.033). Employed family members of pediatric patients accepted the bad news better (p=0.04). Conclusion: The results showed no significant differences between the attitudes of adult patients and their families and families of pediatric patients. The attitude differences were observed between groups in certain demographic variables. Therefore the socioeconomic and demographic backgrounds of the person should be considered when delivering the bad news

Personality traits, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness negatively affect quality of life in women with breast cancer. However, the contribution of each of these factors is not precisely determined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among personality traits, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and quality of life in patients with breast cancer. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 180 women with breast cancer (90 patients and 90 healthy individuals) were recruited from Imam Reza and Tabatabaee hospitals in Tabriz. Data were collected using the Beck Hopelessness Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) (with acceptable validity and reliability). T tests and Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used for data analysis, and P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Quality of life was negatively correlated with neuroticism, depression, despair, and anxiety and positively correlated with extroversion. Also, there was a positive correlation between neuroticism and depression, hopelessness, and anxiety, while other personality traits were negatively correlated with depression, hopelessness, and anxiety. Conclusion: Anxiety, depression, and hopelessness reduce quality of life of patients with advanced cancer. Patients with extraversion have less anxiety and depression, which leads to a better quality of life, while more nervous patients may show signs of anxiety and depression and low quality of life

Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) (Kala-Azar) is one of the most important health-related parasitic infectious disease. Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is an endemic disease in Iran and more than 80 countries worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the Epidemiological and Clinical Characteristics of Infants with VL. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 31 patients with diagnosis of VL in Ardabil city hospital, Iran, during 2011-6. The questionnaire included demographic information such as age, gender, weight, place of living, level of family education, family history of diseases, and symptoms to complete the specified goals. Results: Of all cases, 18 (58.1%) were girls and the rest were boys. The average age of the patients was 25.8 32.3 months. More than half (61.3%) of the patients were in the Moghan County (Ghermi, Parsabad, Aslandooz). Clinical symptoms began in 10 (32.3%) patients in winter. Fever was the most commonly observed clinical symptom in children with VL (93.5%). Of 27 children with a history of symptom onset, 17 children (63%) were diagnosed at the interval of 2-4 weeks. The result of the DAT test was positive in 27 children (87.1%) and the rest were negative. In the clinical presentation of patients, fever, anemia and enlargement of the spleen and liver were common. Conclusion: The use of DAT in combination with clinical symptoms seems to be more suitable for initiating treatment than bone marrow aspiration in all patients

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance characteristics of Listeria species isolated from foods and food processing environments, animal and human specimens in Iran. A systematic review of the papers published in Persian and English languages up to 20th May 2019 and indexed in the Scientific Information Database, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases using related keywords was conducted. Eligible articles were selected based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, followed by data extraction and meta-analysis using random-effects or fixed-effects models. A total of 27 articles were found reporting antibiotic resistance patterns of different Listeria species using disk diffusion method. Among Listeria species, Listeria monocytogenes resistance to commonly used antibiotics i.e. penicillin, ampicillin and gentamicin was as follows: 34.5%, 26.4%, 8.9% in isolates from foods and food processing environments, 47.1%, 29.5%, 9.2% in isolates from animal specimens and 56.8%, 29.5%, 32.4% in human strains, respectively. A high prevalence of L. monocytogenes strains resistant to penicillin, ampicillin and gentamicin was observed in Iran. Our findings suggested that trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, vancomycin and ciprofloxacin can be used as alternatives in the treatment of human listeriosis in Iran due to their low resistance rates
