In this master's thesis, I propose to explore a blind spot in the craft world. My aim is to carefully define a non-normative part of the artisan's attribute, by raising the following question: how can I conceptualize, bring to life and embody the "artisan of transmission" in my creative capacity to combine oralities, spiritualities and gestures in my personal traditions? In this memoir, I outline the various paths that the artisan of transmission must take to define his or her singular identity, and the processes that enable him or her to apply his or her transmitting stakes. In view of the multiple angles of reflection, and in order to justify this originality, I have chosen to develop a structure in six chapters. These are, as it were, encapsulated in a writing context of poetic essayism. This process, which I define as a space of "porosity" between the reader and the transmitter, offers a relationship to the attempt to externalize one's thought while at the same time discovering it. Thus, the first step presented in this memoir is naturally a return to my life as a young man and my experience as a craftsman, in order to shed situational light on this research. I then take an interdisciplinary approach, articulating the main concepts derived from a study of anthropological survival (see Warburg & Recht, 2019) with the processes and inherences linked to a representation of transmission. From the image of the latter and its not necessarily linear unfolding, I attempt to bring out the balance in the act of transmission through the mediums expressed by the craftsman: gesture and storytelling. In the third stage, my approach will reveal an iterative methodology rooted in a postmodern ethnographic tradition. The latter lends itself completely to the possible crossover between autobiographical and ethnomethodological positions, the declensions of attitudes of the "Autos" (see Morin, 1980) - self-reflexivity, self-definition, self-training and self-mediality - and the postures of the Practitioner-Researcher in educational science and the anthropological Agent-Patient. The pursuit of this path is thus an opportunity to highlight the journeys of indigenous authors with unique perspectives on craft and transmission. In this way, I bring to bear a heterogeneous conceptualization and a suggested definition of what can be understood as personal traditions - oral, spiritual and gestural - and how they can be brought into existence. By producing a literary creation, I highlight, but in a different way, the transformative movements resulting from the establishment of my identity as a craftsman of transmission in its transferability and effectiveness. At the end of this dissertation, I open with the idea that a new taxonomy needs to be applied to the artisan of transmission, so that the notions of automedium, autobiology, actiography and prophecy enrich the approach. To clarify the agentivity of the artisan of transmission, I have diagrammed the different evolutions of this cyclical state, thus specifying a "practice profile" (Boutet, 2004, p. 6) of transmission. The operative capacity of this concept both inside and outside the workshop promises unprecedented prospects for the transmission craftsman: both as an incentive for corporate groupings, as a common denominator for innovation through tradition, but also as a factor in the creation of craft knowledge suitable for transmission
Fabrication and characterisation of Slippery Icephobic Coatings for application to High Voltage Insulators
Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) based on Nepenthes pitcher plant has attracted increasing interest in many applications, particularly for mitigating icing hazard. Aside from exhibiting a water repellency, such surfaces have low contact angle hysteresis of <2.5° and low tilt angle of <5°. Nonetheless, SLIPS still suffer from challenges related to the oil depletion that reduces their service life. Herein, two different approaches, namely, microtexturing and the use of oil absorbent, are presented to effectively produce the slippery surfaces for the enhanced durability of engineered lubricant-infused materials. In the first approach, the replication method was employed to produce liquid-infused textured surfaces (LITS) through the chemical etching technique. Analysis such as lubricant depletion/recovery, confirmed that the presence of microtextures and lubricant viscosity can have significant roles in controlling the oil migration rate. Furthermore, merging microtexturing and slipperiness in LITS can enhance the icephobic performance. Such surface demonstrated an ice adhesion strength of less than 20 kPa, which is four orders of magnitude lower than the pristine surface. Furthermore, LITS can offer more long-lasting icephobic properties compared with pristine surface lacking microtextures. For the second strategy, the lubricant-loaded carriers were used to prohibit the rapid oil consumption, thus prolonging the life service of the prepared coatings. Accordingly, the negative pressure was applied to promote the incorporation of the lubricant within carrier pores and increase the carrier loading capacity. For this purpose, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) method have been used to evaluate the lubricant infusion quantitively. High oil content (around 50 wt. %) has been commonly used to enhance icephobic performance, but the presence of excessive amount of lubricant within the matrix can result in decreased mechanical characteristics of the prepared surfaces. The combination of different anti-icing mechanisms, such as stress localization, slipperiness, and the formation of nonfrozen molecules can be helpful to obtain desirable icephobic properties at low oil contents. These mechanisms were achieved using blended matrix, infused lubricant, and hydroxyl-terminated lubricant. The slippery coating was developed by impregnating hydroxyl-terminated-lubricant-loaded carriers into a blend of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and alkoxy-siloxane resin. The prepared coating showed desirable anti-icing and de-icing properties and long-lasting stability against UV exposure and humidity. The icephobic characteristics of the coating can be attributed from its slipperiness and formation of unfrozen molecules. The electrical properties of the coating were evaluated using a comprehensive set of methods, including dielectric spectroscopy, flashover, condensation, and inclined plane tests. In comparison with the reference sample, the coating containing lubricant-loaded carriers exhibited lower dielectric permittivity and loss factor. Moreover, the coating reduced the leakage current under high humidity. The lubricant-loaded-carrier-containing coating also heightened the flashover voltage in different conditions. The results confirmed that the coating containing lubricant-loaded carriers could be considered as a potential candidate for applying on high-voltage insulators.
Premium food for offspring? Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) diet during breeding season in eastern Canada
Knowledge on the diet of the Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus Swainson, 1832) is fragmentary and relies on a limited number of studies. Gaps remain in our understanding of the plasticity of its diet, particularly in the eastern part of its range. The main objective of this study was to assess the diet of Black-backed Woodpeckers in burned and unburned habitats and among sexes and ages in Québec. We collected feces and fecal bags from unburned and burned habitats in the Central Laurentians ecoregion of the eastern boreal shield ecozone and assessed diets based on identified prey items. Buprestidae and Cerambycidae of the sub-family Lamiinae were the predominant prey for adult Black-backed Woodpeckers in burned habitats, and the Pythidae Pytho niger (Kirby, 1837) and Lamiinae were the most prevalent prey in unburned habitats. Lamiinae were the most predominant prey items provisioned to nestling in burned habitat, while P. niger was their predominant food in unburned habitat, followed by Cerambycidae (without Lamiinae) and Lamiinae. Our results present new insights into Black-backed Woodpecker diet where parents feed their offspring with the largest prey available, potentially providing higher fitness for their offspring. Furthermore, our study confirms that Black-backed Woodpeckers, at least in the eastern part of its range, are not restricted to feed on Lamiinae but are rather opportunistic in taking advantage from resource–pulse interactions provided by recently disturbed habitats, especially from recently burned habitats

Modelling gamification, virtual-try-on technology, e-logistics service quality as predictors of online shopping: an empirical investigation
This research uses self-determination theory to examine gamification, virtual-try-on technology (VTO), and e-logistics service quality(e-LSQ) as antecedents of customer satisfaction in the domain of online shopping. This research further examines customer satisfaction as predictor of repurchase intentions while theorizing Pay-on-delivery (POD) as a moderator between customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. Data were gathered using a self-administered questionnaire from online shoppers. The sample comprised of 634 respondents who had purchased products using VTO. The results confirmed VTO and e-LSQ as strong antecedents of customer satisfaction, which further leads to repurchase intention. Interestingly, gamification had insignificant influence on customer satisfaction. Further, POD moderated the relationship between customer satisfaction and repurchase intentions. This study is a preliminary attempt in the online context to evaluate POD and VTO as substantial factors stimulating online purchase using the SDT as a theoretical underpinning. A theoretical relationship among e-LSQ, VTO, and customer satisfaction is further demonstrated by the study
Unraveling the role of non-coding rare variants in epilepsy
The discovery of new variants has leveled off in recent years in epilepsy studies, despite the use of very large cohorts. Consequently, most of the heritability is still unexplained. Rare non-coding variants have been largely ignored in studies on epilepsy, although non-coding single nucleotide variants can have a significant impact on gene expression. We had access to whole genome sequencing (WGS) from 247 epilepsy patients and 377 controls. To assess the functional impact of non-coding variants, ExPecto, a deep learning algorithm was used to predict expression change in brain tissues. We compared the burden of rare non-coding deleterious variants between cases and controls. Rare non-coding highly deleterious variants were significantly enriched in Genetic Generalized Epilepsy (GGE), but not in Non-Acquired Focal Epilepsy (NAFE) or all epilepsy cases when compared with controls. In this study we showed that rare non-coding deleterious variants are associated with epilepsy, specifically with GGE. Larger WGS epilepsy cohort will be needed to investigate those effects at a greater resolution. Nevertheless, we demonstrated the importance of studying non-coding regions in epilepsy, a disease where new discoveries are scarce
MultiscaleDTM : an open‐source R package for multiscale geomorphometric analysis
Digital terrain models (DTMs) are datasets containing altitude values above or below a reference level, such as a reference ellipsoid or a tidal datum over geographic space, often in the form of a regularly gridded raster. They can be used to calculate terrain attributes that describe the shape and characteristics of topographic surfaces. Calculating these terrain attributes often requires multiple software packages that can be expensive and specialized. We have created a free, open‐source R package, MultiscaleDTM , that allows for the calculation of members from each of the five major thematic groups of terrain attributes: slope, aspect, curvature, relative position, and roughness, from a regularly gridded DTM. Furthermore, these attributes can be calculated at multiple spatial scales of analysis, a key feature that is missing from many other packages. Here, we demonstrate the functionality of the package and provide a simulation exploring the relationship between slope and roughness. When roughness measures do not account for slope, these attributes exhibit a strong positive correlation. To minimize this correlation, we propose a new roughness measure called adjusted standard deviation. In most scenarios tested, this measure produced the lowest rank correlation with slope out of all the roughness measures tested. Lastly, the simulation shows that some existing roughness measures from the literature that are supposed to be independent of slope can actually exhibit a strong inverse relationship with the slope in some cases
Experimental measurement and expression of atmospheric ice Young's modulus according to its density
Ice properties are hard to define and vary significantly in literature. While some of this variation can be attributed to different testing methods, the authors believe that most of this variation comes from the nature of the ice accretion itself. To address the problematic of scattering in mechanical properties values, a new approach is proposed which consists of expressing the behavior of atmospheric ice according to its density. Thanks to a hybrid experimental/numerical approach, the accurate measurement of the Young's modulus of atmospheric ice can be done. Ice samples are generated in both cold room and wind tunnel and at many different test conditions. The results obtained in this study confirm the validity of this new approach and gives a concrete relationship between the Young's modulus and the ice density. Finally, the relevance of using porous material hypothesis to explain the relation and the results domain of validity are discussed
Police bike patrollers must be in good physical condition to do their job properly and efficiently on a bike. However, there is little information on the actual workload associated with this patrol and its impact on the police officer’s health. This research project aimed to quantify the effects of bicycle patrol not only on the general physical condition of police officers but also on the lifestyle habits of patrollers. We conducted two physical fitness assessments – before and after the patrol season – including taking anthropometric measurements, five muscular tests, and a test of aerobic capacity on a bicycle. In addition, the patrollers answered a series of questionnaires on musculoskeletal health, sleep, stress, and the practice of physical activity. The results show that the workload associated with a bicycle patrol season contributes to improving several components of physical fitness, including cardiovascular capacity and power development on the bicycle. An improvement in sleep, a decrease in perceived stress, and an increase in the level of leisure activity have been observed. All the results obtained allow us to consider that the bicycle patrol could benefit the patrollers' overall health. However, future research is needed to determine further the impact of this type of patrol on the health of patrol officers
