TAMM review : On the importance of tap and tree characteristics in maple sugaring
Maple sugaring mainly uses sugar and red maples (Acer saccharum and Acer rubrum) by tapping them for sap in the leafless-state across large portions of their ranges. How much sap exudes from a tap hole and how sweet this sap is, can vary substantially. Year-to-year variation in sap yield and sugar content can be primarily traced to differences in meteorological conditions that drive sap runs. Yet, how much of the total variation in sap yield and sugar content is linked to the year, site, species, tree, or tap has not been investigated systematically.
Here, we reviewed the literature and also compiled a dataset of sap yield and sugar content from gravity taps on 324 red and sugar maples. The compiled data originates from multiple studies at ten sites across a large proportion of the ranges of sugar and red maple and stretches over eleven years. Using about 15 000 data points on sap yield and sap sugar content, we analysed the importance of tap and tree characteristics, such as height of the tap hole on the stem or diameter at breast height. We also review previous research on the importance of tap and tree characteristics in maple sugaring. Moreover, we partition variability in the data to attribute it to species, site, tree, year, and tap characteristics.
Our results indicate that species, site and tree characteristics are the three largest sources of variability with regards to sap yield and the sap’s sucrose concentration. However, differences between years and tap characteristics, which were found to be comparatively minor sources of variability in sap yield and the sap’s sucrose concentration, have attracted far more attention in the past. We advocate for the continuation and expansion of systematic measurements of sap characteristics across a network of sites to further improve our understanding of maple sugaring. Such an understanding will be instrumental to prepare maple sugaring operations against the imminent effects of the climate and biodiversity crises and ensure their sustainability to perpetuate this traditional activity
Chemical variability and chemotype concept of essential oils from Algerian wild plants
The chemical compositions of eleven wild species of aromatic and medicinal plants indigenous to Algeria, including Thymus, Mentha, Rosmarinus, Lavandula, and Eucalyptus, were analyzed. The identification of the chemical composition of each oil was conducted using GC-FID and GC-MS capillary gas chromatography. The study investigated the chemical variability of the essential oils based on several parameters. These included the impact of the vegetative cycle on oil composition, variations among subspecies of the same species, variations among species within the same genus, the influence of environmental factors on composition variations within a species, chemo typing, and the genetic factors (such as hybridization) contributing to chemical variability. The concepts of chemotaxonomy, chemotype, and chemical markers were examined to understand their limitations and emphasize the importance of regulating the use of essential oils derived from wild plants. The study advocates for an approach that involves the domestication of wild plants and screening their chemical compositions according to more specific standards for each commercially available oil. Lastly, the nutritional implications and the variability of nutritional impact based on the chemical composition of the essential oils will be discussed
The mental side in the preparation of an athlete is often forgotten or neglected. Indeed, athletes are unaware about the usefulness of the mental training in their performance. This lack ok knowledge is also seen in motocross. There is a scientific void in the mental aspect of motocross riders. Therefore, this research project aims to know the perceptions of pro motocross riders in mental training and mental toughness, to identify the mental strategies to manage distractions and to identify the reasons of sport participation and commitment despite injuries and risks associated with motocross. To meet these objectives, semi-directed interviews with eight French-speaking motocross riders from professional or intermediate categories have been done. A general inductive qualitative data analysis approach was used to analyze the research data. The results demonstrate that motocross riders have low knowledge in mental training and mental toughness. Moreover, they don’t practice mental training, but they believe that it could be useful in their sport. The lack of specialist resources and the resentment of not needing mental training explain their non-practice of mental training. The distractions management such as dirt bike, spectators and weather is possible by several strategies like visualization, keywords, pre-competition routine and positive internal dialogue. Their sport participation is explained by personal satisfaction through pleasure, well-being and control in particular. Finally, this study allows us to better understand the mental aspect of performance from competitive motocross. Also, it will facilitate the various professionals in the motocross industry to develop mental training with motocross riders
What we learn is what we earn from sustainable and circular construction
Sustainable and circular construction entails emissions and wastes reduction through the reuse and recycling of materials to achieve economic gains and save resources for future generations. This work aims to map the academic research on sustainable and circular construction from different imperative angles on the Web of Science (WoS) database. In this line, we classified and reviewed the existing research using a bibliometric and network analysis approach into the following themes: life cycle assessment (LCA), green assessment tools, technologies and methods, quantification of recycling of waste and energy, building information modeling (BIM), greenhouse gas emissions in construction, and greenhouse gas emissions in the specific case of novel construction types. The study provides a bird-eye-view of existing qualitative and quantitative research findings within the themes above. Subsequently, the study highlights the future research avenues within each theme to develop the domain further. The work will assist practitioners and policy-makers in understanding the current status of sustainable and circular construction and suggest necessary actions to attain environmental sustainability
Comparison and validation of pressure and acceleration time-domain waveform models of a smart insole for accurate step count in healthy people
Several studies have shown good accuracies for step count based on pressure signals of smart insoles in people walking at different speeds. Although smart insoles are often equipped with pressure sensors and accelerometer, no study has focused on comparing the accuracy of step count separately based on pressure and acceleration signals in healthy people. The objectives of this study were to design a waveform model of accelerometer and pressure sensors, and then compare with commercially well-known step count devices and validate these models using manual step counter for step count. Eight healthy participants (age: 39.8±17.56 years old) wore a pair of smart insoles, a GaitUp, and a StepWatchTM and performed the six-minute walking test at walking speeds from 1.62 to 2.22 m/s. Four pressure and one acceleration waveform models were designed and used for the detection of 341 to 412 steps. Accuracies ranged from 99.80%±0.60% to 99.97%±1.38% for right side, and from 99.67%±0.63% to 99.90%±0.05% for left side with pressure waveform models. In addition, the acceleration waveform model provided accuracies of 99.87%±2.49% and 99.84%±4.77% for right and left sides respectively. Step count accuracies using the GaitUp were 99.51%±2.06% for right side, and 99.51%±4.32% for left side. Finally, the StepWatchTM yielded step count accuracies of 99.31%±15.95% and 98.52%±28.06% for right and left sides respectively. These results suggested the smart insole with pressure and acceleration waveform models as more accurate than the StepWatchTM and the GaitUp for step count
Stressed and distressed: how is the COVID-19 pandemic associated with sexual frequency, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction?
Background: The Canadian government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic included the implementation of several restrictive measures since March 2020. These actions sought to decrease social contact and increase physical distancing, including that within universities. Such constraints were required to impede the transmission of the virus; however, concerns remain about their impact on the sexual and intimate relationships of university employees and students.
Aim: This study examined the associations between COVID-19–related stress and sexual frequency, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction, also testing the mediating role of psychological distress.
Methods: The models were tested with Canadian data collected from university employees and students in 2 phases: the first wave in April-May 2020 (T1; n = 2754) and the second wave in November-December 2021 (T2; n = 1430), 18 months afterward. Participants completed self-report questionnaires online. Path analyses were performed to test the associations of the mediation models.
Outcomes: The principal outcomes included psychological distress determined via the Patient Health Questionnaire–4, relationship satisfaction measured via the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and sexual satisfaction and sexual frequency ascertained through a single item each.
Results: Overall, COVID-19–related stress was associated with higher psychological distress, which in turn was related to lower sexual frequency, sexual satisfaction, and relationship satisfaction. Similar results were obtained with T1 and T2 data, indicating the mediating effect of psychological distress.
Clinical implications: These findings increase scholarly comprehension of the negative associations between stress/distress and sexual and romantic relationships. Sexuality and close relationships are vital to the quality of human life; thus, targeted interventions should be developed to reduce COVID-19–related stress and its impact on sexual and romantic relationships to mitigate the long-term influences of this unique global challenge.
Strengths & Limitations: To our knowledge, this study is the first to use a large sample size and replicate findings in 2 waves. Nonetheless, it is limited by the use of cross-sectional data. Longitudinal studies with the same participants are mandated to better understand the evolution of these outcomes.
Conclusion: COVID-19–related stress and psychological distress were found among participating university students and employees and were associated with lower sexual satisfaction, sexual frequency, and intimate relationship satisfaction. These results were observed at the early onset of the pandemic and 18 months afterward, suggesting that the stress generated by the pandemic were not mere reactions to the onset of the pandemic but persisted over time
Natural regeneration potential and dynamics in boreal lichen woodlands of eastern Canada following soil scarification
Boreal lichen woodlands (LWs) are stable low tree-density zones of the Canadian boreal forest whose afforestation has been proposed as a way to create new C sinks and thus mitigate climate change. Planting operations in these remote areas are however costly and time-consuming, and may not be necessary when soil scarification is followed by dense natural regeneration. In the present study, we assessed the natural regeneration potential and dynamics in six boreal LWs of Québec, Canada, 11 years after soil scarification. The number, size (height and stem diameter) and age of seedlings were measured in 2-4 sampling plots per site (18 plots in total). Our data show that scarification operations produced on average 1,400 m2 ha–1 of exposed mineral soil (scarification intensity of 14%) with, however, a large within-site variability. The natural regeneration was mainly composed of black spruce seedlings (> 95%), averaged ∼12,000 seedlings ha–1 across the six sites and significantly varied among sites, mostly due to the variation in scarification intensity. Seedling density averaged ∼9 seedlings m–2 of exposed mineral soil and increased with seed tree mean diameter at breast height (DBH) (R2 = 0.51; P < 0.05) but not with the density of seed trees, revealing the importance of old and large seed trees in natural regeneration success. Together, scarification intensity and the DBH of remaining seed trees explained ∼60% of the variation in natural regeneration density across the 18 sampled plots. The rate of establishment of seedlings was generally high – with on average 60% of the carrying capacity of the substrate being reached within three years following scarification – and increased with seed tree mean DBH (R2 = 0.77; P < 0.05). However, the growth rate of seedlings was very low. Eleven years after scarification, 60% of the seedlings were < 15 cm and the height of 10-yr-old seedlings averaged 27.5 cm. Thus, even though seedling establishment was successful, the biomass accumulated by the natural regeneration was negligible in the span of a decade. Therefore, the implementation of afforestation following scarification appears to be necessary to create significant C sinks in the midterm
