    “Better start”: promoting breastfeeding through demarketing

    This paper explores how demarketing strategies impact women’s breastfeeding attitudes, intentions, and behaviors under the moderation of time pressure and breastfeeding knowledge. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey among 369 respondents is used to test the proposed hypotheses. The study's population includes all breastfeeding women in Palestine. Snowball and convenience sampling were used to choose study participants through personal connections and social media. Every respondent was encouraged to share the survey with their social media contacts. Results The data results confirm the positive effects of promotion, place, price, and product demarketing, respectively, on women’s attitudes, intentions, and behavior toward breastfeeding. These effects were reinforced by reduction in time pressure and breastfeeding knowledge. Furthermore, demarketing effects are stronger for younger, more educated, unemployed, and lower-income women. Conclusion The study is a primer on promoting breastfeeding instead of formula by means of demarketing strategies

    Editorial: Highlights in environmental psychology: pro-environmental purchase intent

    Pro-environmental purchase is a topic of rising importance worldwide because it contributes to making consumption patterns more responsible (De Canio et al., 2021). Pro-environmental behavior can be defined as “behavior that harms the environment as little as possible, or even benefits the environment” (Steg and Vlek, 2009, p. 309; Ertz et al., 2016, p. 3971). Consequently, pro-environmental purchase (PEP) must be understood as a specific form of buying that harms the natural environment as little as possible and even benefits it. Products and services falling under that category are also called “green” and include, among others, energy-efficient household appliances (Nguyen et al., 2016; Teoh et al.), water-saving appliances (Wang and Tian), eco-tourism (Fennell, 2014), ecofriendly clothing (Wiederhold and Martinez, 2018), eco-designed products (Zeng et al., 2017), bioplastics-based products (Atiwesh et al., 2021), organic food products (Rodier et al., 2017), or products and services facilitating pro-environmental behaviors such as compost bags, for example. A key factor in this is consumers, who are a fundamental part of the overall consumption process and consumer society, and it is crucial to better investigate what drives them to pro-environmental purchases

    Malgré l’insécurité alimentaire persistante chez les moins de 18 ans au Canada, le pays n’a pas déployé de programme d’alimentation scolaire, comparativement aux autres pays du G7. Le présent article cherche à identifier les composantes d’un environnement capabilisant favorable au déploiement d’un programme canadien d’alimentation scolaire. Plus spécifiquement, l’accent sera mis sur les capabilités personnelles des parents. Les données démontrent qu’au-delà des caractéristiques socioéconomiques et politiques, il faut considérer les capabilités personnelles des parents usagers des programmes d’alimentation scolaire. Ainsi, l’analyse des résultats expose une compréhension actualisée de ces capabilités et des caractéristiques socioéconomiques

    Evidence of migratory coupling between grey wolves and migratory caribou

    Large‐scale animal migrations influence population and community dynamics along with ecosystem functioning. The migratory coupling concept posits that movement of migrant prey can lead to large‐scale movements of predators. In northern ecosystems, spatial patterns and behavioral responses of grey wolf to spatio‐temporal changes in its primary prey distribution, the migratory caribou, remain poorly documented. We used a long‐term GPS dataset (2011–2021) of 59 wolves and 431 migratory caribou from the declining Rivière‐aux‐Feuilles herd (QC, Canada) to investigate movement patterns and space use of wolves related to caribou seasonal distribution. Wolves home ranges overlapped with areas used by caribou year‐round, especially in May and winter. Wolves exhibited three annual tactics: sedentary (17%), long‐distance migration (> 700 km) between wintering areas and the tundra (36%), and a medium‐distance migration, stopping their northward movement near the treeline (47%). Migratory wolves started spring migration northward earlier than caribou, intercepting their prey on their way to calving grounds, but departed southward for fall migration later than caribou, tracking them on their way back to wintering areas. Wolves near or overlapping areas used by caribou exhibited lower monthly movement rates compared to wolves located further away. Overlap of home range among wolves was higher during migrations and winter but decreased in summer when wolves rear pups and caribou are dispersed on summer grounds. We provide evidence of migratory coupling between grey wolves and migratory caribou, with most wolves adjusting their space use patterns to match their primary prey distribution. Although predation pressure may affect the dynamics of declining caribou herds, the global decline of that prey may in turn impact predators on the long‐term, potentially enhancing intraspecific competition for new resources. Highlighting this migratory coupling is a key step to develop appropriate conservation and management measures for both guilds in the context of large‐scale migratory prey decline

    Icephobic behavior of a slippery coating containing nanoporous particles as lubricant-loaded carriers

    This study details the fabrication of an icephobic coating for steel produced using a silicone–epoxy hybrid resin; the coating has good mechanical properties and weathering resistance for outdoor applications. Silicone–epoxy hybrid resins and amino-functional silane-curing agents were selected for investigation and applied to steel samples. Wettability, ice adhesion strength, and the mechanical and weathering resistance properties of the developed coatings were assessed using a drop-shape analyzer, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as push-off, tensile, and QUV tests. The possible correlation between ice adhesion strength and Young modulus was also investigated. The best-performing matrix in terms of mechanical properties and weathering resistance had its surface energy characteristics altered—via two fluorinated silicone additives at various concentrations—to lower ice adhesion strength. For the steel substrates, the optimized additive-altered surface showed a lower ice adhesion strength (decreasing from 362 to 94 kPa) with an adhesion reduction factor of 10.6. The fabricated coatings can serve as a protective layer for marine harbor infrastructures

    It's time to take a sustainable approach to health care in the face of the challenges of the 21st century

    Health challenges in the 21st century have become increasingly complex and global. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the many problems faced by health care systems around the world and sadly, exposed various flaws. With ageing populations, particularly in Canada, as well as unavoidable factors such as globalization and accelerating climate change, it is becoming imperative to implement a new health care approach based on intersectorality and interdisciplinarity. Furthermore, links must be forged between all the stakeholders, i.e. the researchers, the health system and its specialists, the communities and the individuals themselves. It is in this perspective, where everyone concerned must be equally involved in attaining a better quality of life, that the concepts of One Health and sustainable health must be deployed

    Scale mismatches between predictor and response variables in species distribution modelling: A review of practices for appropriate grain selection

    There is a lack of guidance on the choice of the spatial grain of predictor and response variables in species distribution models (SDM). This review summarizes the current state of the art with regard to the following points: (i) the effects of changing the resolution of predictor and response variables on model performance; (ii) the effect of conducting multi-grain versus single-grain analysis on model performance; and (iii) the role of land cover type and spatial autocorrelation in selecting the appropriate grain size. In the reviewed literature, we found that coarsening the resolution of the response variable typically leads to declining model performance. Therefore, we recommend aiming for finer resolutions unless there is a reason to do otherwise (e.g. expert knowledge of the ecological scale). We also found that so far, the improvements in model performance reported for multi-grain models have been relatively low and that useful predictions can be generated even from single-scale models. In addition, the use of high-resolution predictors improves model performance; however, there is only limited evidence on whether this applies to models with coarser-resolution response variables (e.g. 100 km 2 and coarser). Low-resolution predictors are usually sufficient for species associated with fairly common environmental conditions but not for species associated with less common ones (e.g. common vs rare land cover category). This is because coarsening the resolution reduces variability within heterogeneous predictors and leads to underrepresentation of rare environments, which can lead to a decrease in model performance. Thus, assessing the spatial autocorrelation of the predictors at multiple grains can provide insights into the impacts of coarsening their resolution on model performance. Overall, we observed a lack of studies examining the simultaneous manipulation of the resolution of predictor and response variables. We stress the need to explicitly report the resolution of all predictor and response variables
