Serological Studies on Twelve Species of Candida
The studies on the serology of Candida emphasize the fact that their antigenic structure is complicated. The results of the agglutination, precipitin reactions and complement fixation tests are confusing, contradictory and, so far, too impractical for the clinical laboratory. This study is an attempt to clarify the situation by using the newer techniques of the Ouchterlogy agar gel-diffusion precipitin method, (18) the hemolysin method, as well as the usual agglutination procedure. Since the precipitin method appears of possible value in diagnosis, this will be the main emphasis in this work
The Effects of Para-Chlorophenylalanine on a Conditioned Emotional Response in Rats
The initial intent of this study was to investigate p-CPA\u27s actions on conditioned anxiety (CER) in rats in order to ascertain whether the derived effects were qualitatively similar to those previously reported for conflict behavior. Specifically, the goals of this study were to determine if p-CPA would reinstate lever-pressing behavior that had been suppressed by a series of tone-shock pairings. If a change in behavior did occur, would the reintroduction of serotonin, through the use of 5-HTP, return the behavior to pre-drug control levels
Ultrastructure of the Chorionic Villi in the Term Baboon (Papio sp.) Placenta
The purpose of this paper is to describe the ultrastructure of the chorion frondosum of the baboon fetal placenta at or near term gestation. There is a void or, at best, only limited ultrastructural information in almost all fields of the biological sciences. The area of placentation is no exception. Since the ultimate goal of many scientific endeavors is the contribution to the vital field of human health, this investigator feels that much information can be gained through the utilization and study of the nonhuman primates in scientific research. The baboon (Papio sp.) has been shown to be quite similar to the human from many aspects. Some work has been done on the biological structure and ultrastructure of primate fetal placentae, however, most of it has been limited to man. Ramsey and Harris have reported their observations on the macaque fetal placenta. The literature on the histological structure of the baboon placenta during the fetal period of gestation is also quite limited. Breschet and Turner reported limited observations on single specimens; Coventry described the placenta of a baboon killed at 4 months of gestation; Hilleman described a specimen obtained near term; Houston and Hendrickx have reported their observations on the fetal vasculature of full-term baboon placentae; and recently Houston reported a detailed consideration of observations on the development of the baboon placenta during the fetal period of gestation. As can be noted, the literature on the histological structure of the baboon fetal placenta is limited and there have been no reported observations on the ultrastructure of the baboon fetal placenta. Several detailed considerations on the fine structure of hemochorial placentae, especially of the human placenta, have been published and are useful in the comparison of the baboon term chorion frondosum with that of the human. It is felt that the ultrastructure as well as the histological structure of the nonhuman primates must be investigated and described. This would benefit not only comparative studies, but also basic research by contributing to our foundation of knowledge. Only in this way can the bases be set from which other scientific researchers can investigate and elucidate the normal as well as the pathological processes involving and/or related to placentation, and ultimately contribute these to the benefit of man. The purpose of this paper is to describe the ultrastructure of the chorion frondosum of the baboon fetal placenta at or near term gestation
An Analysis of the Number of Articles Published on Pedagogy and Methodology of Teaching Found in The Grade Teacher Between the Years 1947-1952
The purpose of the present thesis is to tabulate, classify, and analyze the number of articles on methods of teaching found in The Grade Teacher during a five year period, September 1947 through June 1952.
The Grade Teacher is one of the most widely read professional magazines. Since its publication in 1883 it has aimed to provide teachers with pedagogical helps and inspirational assistance. When trends in teaching took a new turn as they did with the advent .of the unit method of instruction The Grade Teacher became a clearing house for the distribution of helpful material. It became the medium through which experimental studies were published and classroom research was encouraged. The writer has been vitally interested in this magazine for many years and her knowledge of its contents led to the present investigation. The purpose of the present thesis is to tabulate, classify, and analyze the number of articles on methods of teaching found in The Grade Teacher during a five year period, September 1947 through June 1952. The documentary frequency method of research was the one most suited to this type of investigation. All the issues of The Grade Teacher from this five year period were examined and the number of articles dealing with pedagogy or methods of teaching were selected. By methods of teaching is meant any article that describes or suggests better ways of presenting any aspect of the elementary school curriculum. After getting the numerical picture, the type of article was noted, the subject matter, and the authorship. The value of this study lies in the fact that the articles written during the period were assembled, classified, and made readily accessible to supervisors and teachers who wish to recommend special articles to teachers. It also shows whether there has been a consistent interest in any one subject over the period of five years and whether the authorship shows that specialists of elementary education have taken the lead in the publication of articles
