The Temporality of Interlinear Translation: Kairos in the Persian Hölderlin (Representations, 2021)
No full textThis article examines the temporality of interlinear translation through a case study of the rendering of Friedrich Hölderlin’s poetry into Persian. We argue that, in its adherence to the word order of the original, the interlinear crib prioritizes the temporality of the instant (kairos) over the temporality of the linear sequence (chronos). Kairos is made manifest in the literalist translations of Hölderlin by the modernist Iranian translator-poet Bijan Elahi (d. 2010). This inquiry advances our understanding of the role of syntax in constituting literary form and in shaping translation, and exposes the contingency of the translator’s decisions in every given literary juncture
Art of the Book: Experimental Instruction in the CalArts Library
Get PDFFor CalArts’ 2023 Winter Session, Sam Regal, Reference and Instruction Librarian, and Joan Jocson-Singh, Institute Librarian, collaboratively developed Art of the Book, CalArts Library’s first credit-bearing course. Over the course of two weeks, students were challenged to consider the structure and concept of books as an artist’s medium. Participants engaged with materials from the CalArts Archives, Artists’ Books, and Special Collections, and closely examined contemporary avant-garde artists’ books and practices. The instructors led hands-on workshops to accompany historical and theoretical discussion, teaching binding techniques, papermaking, and printmaking. Students also surveyed collections materials, utilizing standardized library preservation techniques, including pH testing, measuring physical degradation of the materials, and accessing reformatting/replacement needs.
Participants were ultimately tasked with producing an original artists’ book project that synthesized their knowledge of materials, narrative, and form. Students generously shared the trajectories of their work from conceptualization to physical articulation and discussed the vectors through which they align their various affiliations of self/identity when creating art. Some projects took the form of experimental structures and other variations on the codex, and students were asked to defend their projects’ inherent book-ness, however abstract.
The course was open to undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, and art, animation, creative writing, dance, and theater students participated. Their final projects vividly reflected their diverse creative and cultural backgrounds, and each book object was approached with thought and intention–to dazzling results
CRIMINOLOGY AND AFRICAN LITERATURE: A DIDACTIC APPROACH
No full textThe paper in question looks at how criminological theory is reflected in the writing of African authors. I make an effort to demonstrate how the authors' perceptions of their society affect how they portray the issue of crime. A reading of the books "Petals of Blood" by Ngugi wa Thiongo, "No Longer at Ease" by Chinua Achebe, "Money Galore" by Amu Djoleto, and "The Beautyful ones are not yet born" by Ayi Kwei Armah from the perspective of criminology. "How can African literature reposition the society from crime?" is the question. Due to the findings of this study, both criminologists and creative authors should take criminology seriously.
