DESNASEs: a group of RNASE-based safety switches for Controlled Cell Elimination

    No full text
Safety switch systems represent gene expression units capable of transcription and translation, resulting in the production of polypeptides that induce cell death upon exposure to specific activating ligands. This discourse introduces RNAse-based safety switches, collectively known as DESNase (a combination of the words ‘destabilized’ and ‘RNAse’), capable of activation through small molecule ligands such as Shield-1, Trimethoprim, Methotrexate, or 4-hydroxytamoxifen. The DESNase system comprises a fusion of a cytotoxic domain (an RNAse polypeptide) and a destabilizing domain. The latter prompts rapid degradation of the entire fusion polypeptide. In the presence of a small molecule ligand, also referred to as a trigger or activator, the DESNAse is stabilized, enabling the cytotoxic domain to initiate the degradation of its RNA substrates. This action block protein synthesis, ultimately culminating in cell death

A QUALITATIVE STUDY IN THE PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE ON THE PERSPECTIVES ON THE TEACHER LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES: A CORRESPONDENCE ARTICLE

This correspondence article examines the difficulties and possibilities encountered by teacher leaders in the Philippines, as outlined in Alegado's research. It emphasizes problems such as leadership focused on principals and inadequate teacher training, leading to minimal teacher participation in school development initiatives. Teachers also experience limitations under conventional leadership frameworks. To tackle these difficulties, the study proposes promoting teacher leadership, utilizing the current K-12 curriculum reform, and providing focused leadership training. Despite persistent obstacles, these tactics are designed to improve collaboration and efficacy in education. The research reveals intricacies and perceives the recent curriculum revision as an opportunity to redefine teacher leadership in the Philippines. Policymakers and educators can utilize these observations to effectively navigate and enhance teacher leadership within the ever-changing educational environment of the country

The Prefaces of the Christian Arabic Books Printed in Wallachia and Syria in the Early 18th Century

A very numerous group among the texts included in early prints is represented by prefaces. Usually, participants in and eyewitnesses of the printing process tell about the emergence of a particular printing house, mention the details of the work accompanying the publication of the book (e.g., translation of the text or its revision based on the original), list the names of participants in the printing process, give instructions to the readers on using the book, etc. The study of the constituent elements of the first books printed by the Arab Christians makes it possible to trace the process of their editorial activity, the formation of book design, the development of structural and content features of prefaces and afterwords, their style and genre and the language peculiarities of a certain epoch and environment. All this makes these texts important objects for a separate study covering various aspects of them

Preface 18th-Century Arabic Printing for the Arab Christians: Most Roads Lead to Istanbul

The first conference of the TYPARABIC project team was hosted by the Library of the Holy Synod in Bucharest on September 5 and 6, 2022. Over the two days, ten core team members and six guests presented the papers published in this volume, the second in the series Early Arabic Printing in the East (EAPE) dedicated by De Gruyter to the TYPARABIC project developed in Bucharest, at the Institute for South-East European Studies of the Romanian Academy, owing to the Advanced Grant obtained in 2020 from the European Research Council (ERC) in the frame of the Horizon 2020 Grants Program. The present volume is divided into three parts in accordance with the diverse scientific interests of the TYPARABIC team members. In these opening pages, I intend to explain concisely why the society, culture and prominent personalities living in 18th-century Istanbul, the Christians’ city of Constantinople, are inseparable from any discussion of printing for the Arabic- speaking Christians of the Levant; or, to put it differently, why, when studying printing in the East, Istanbul is the focus of the researchers’ attention more than any city inside the borders of the Ottoman Empire

Initial Comments on Jiang et al. 2024 (ResearchSquare)

    No full text
This is an initial “take” on the research design and implications of the findings announced, in pre-print, of the new aDNA Yersinia pestis genomes retrieved by Jiang et al. 2024 from the 7th-century mass burials under the collapsed hippodrome at Gerasa/Jerash, Jordan. The significance of this study lies not simply in presenting 8 new genomes from a major site of the Justinianic Plague, but in recalibrating the entire phylogeny of Yersinia pestis since the Late Neolithic. Since the pre-print was released with only partial identification of the genomes used for the study, the present analysis is concerned to propose tentative identifications of those strains and to speculate about the implications of the study as a whole for the general narratives of the three plague pandemics: the Justinianic Plague, the Black Death/2nd Plague Pandemic, and the Third (modern) Plague Pandemic. A full list of references is included, as are three appendices. For the time being, this item will be embargoed.
