Robust Multichannel Decorrelation via Tensor Einstein Product

    No full text
Decorrelation of multichannel signals has played a crucial preprocessing role (in prewhitening and orthogonalization) for many signal processing applications. Classical decorrelation techniques can only be applied for signal vectors. Nonetheless, many emerging big-data and sensor-network applications involve signal tensors (signal samples required to be arranged in a tensor form of arbitrary orders). Meanwhile, the existing tensor-decorrelation methods have serious limitations. First, the correlation-tensors have to be of certain particular orders. Second, the unrealistic assumption of the specific signal-tensor form, namely the canonical polyadic (CP) form, is made. Third, the correlation-tensor has to be full-rank or an extra preprocessor based on principal component analysis is required for any non-full-rank correlation tensor. To remove the aforementioned impractical limitations, we propose a novel robust approach for high-dimensional multichannel decorrelation, which can accommodate signal tensors of arbitrary orders, forms, and ranks without any need of extra preprocessor. In this work, we introduce two new tensor-decorrelation algorithms. Our first new algorithm is designed to tackle full-rank correlation-tensors and our second new algorithm is designed to tackle non-full-rank correlation-tensors. Meanwhile, we also propose a new parallel-computing paradigm to accelerate our proposed new tensor-decorrelation algorithms. To demonstrate the applicability of our proposed new scheme, we also apply our proposed new tensor-decorrelation approach to pre-whiten the tensor signals and analyze the corresponding convergence-speed and misadjustment performances of the tensor least-mean-squares (TLMS) filter. Finally, we assess the computational- and memory-complexities of our proposed new algorithms by simulations over both artificial and real data. Simulation results show that our proposed new multichannel-decorrelation algorithms outperform the existing tensor-decorrelation methods in terms of convergence speed, eigenspread, normalized mean square error (NRMSE), and estimation accuracy

Novel Subject-Dependent Human-Posture Recognition Approach Using Tensor Regression

    No full text
A novel dynamic human-posture recognition approach using tensor regression is proposed in this work. In our proposed approach, a new dynamic segmentation scheme based on hidden logistic regression (HLR) is first undertaken to segment multidimensional skeletal graph data. Within each segment of multidimensional data, a new feature tensor consists of high-dimensional skeletal-graph time-series (SGTS) involving multijoint 3-D coordinates and their temporal differences. Regression models can thus be trained from these collected feature tensors with respect to each type of human posture of interest. Experiments using real-world Kinect data are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed novel tensor-based human-posture recognition scheme. In comparison with two prevalent deep learning models, namely the graph convolutional network (GCN) and the Transformer, our proposed novel tensor-based human-posture recognition approach can achieve the highest recognition accuracy of 97%. Furthermore, we have evaluated the performance of our proposed new method using the open-source Kinect dataset, namely the UTKinect dataset, for one-shot learning. Our proposed novel tensor-based human-posture recognition approach still significantly outperforms the aforementioned prevalent deep learning models for one-shot learning

Orality and Cultural Knowledge: The Case of Saheed Osupa’s Fuji Music

    No full text
It is no longer open for scholarly discourse that most postcolonial societies are challenged with several social and political vices. One of the disconcerting vices is the erosion of story-telling and other indigenous cultural traditions. In addition to this, the verbal and written proficiency in indigenous languages and a deep-seated understanding of cultural nuances have continued to decline in a geometric progression. The underlying cause for this is not far-fetched: most colonized people have adopted Western languages and cultural norms at the detriment of their own indigenous linguistic and cultural practices. In this essay, therefore, I aim to examine how Saheed Osupa’s artistic craftmanship preserves and revitalizes Yoruba cultural heritage amidst globalization and modernization. I will explore how his music is a compendium of riddles, proverbs, myths, and moonlight tales in demonstrating the richness of Yoruba cultural traditions, as seen, for example, in Olaju De, Mo Safejo, and Kokoro Alate, to mention but three. I argue that Osupa’s artistic efforts in upholding Yoruba cultural heritage in a hybrid society of both indigenous and Western values have earned him recognition as a cultural nationalist

Temporal Contrastive Learning for Sensor-Based Human Activity Recognition: A Self-Supervised Approach

    No full text
Deep learning techniques can make use of a large amount of time-series data from wearable devices and greatly benefit the development of sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR). However, representation learning in a supervised manner requires massive labeled sensory data that are time-consuming to obtain and hindered by privacy concerns. To address these issues, we utilize the plentiful unlabeled sensory data and propose a novel self-supervised learning framework, namely temporal contrastive learning in HAR (TCLHAR), which learns the meaningful feature representations for time-series data without labels. Our TCLHAR framework utilizes the temporal co-occurrence relationship among time windows as the supervisory signals to construct positive pairs in the encoder pretraining stage. The encoder is designed for cross-modality fusion, which leverages the local interactions of each sensor modality and the global fusion of features from different sensors. The proposed framework is extensively evaluated on public HAR datasets in supervised, self-supervised, and semi-supervised settings. Our method outperforms several self-supervised learning benchmark models, achieving comparable results with fully labeled data training. When labeled data are scarce, our method can boost the F1 score by up to 65% over traditional supervised training, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our feature representations

Inclusive Ecocriticism: Intersectional Approaches to Environmental Justice in Ovoranmwen N\u27Ogbaisi by Ola Rotimi

    No full text
This study examines the intersection of environmental justice and social equity in Ola Rotimi\u27s Ovonramwen N’Ogbaisi through the lens of inclusive ecocriticism. It explores how the play critiques colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy for their environmental and social impacts on marginalized communities, particularly in Nigeria\u27s Benin Kingdom. The research highlights how Rotimi integrates themes of environmental degradation, social injustice, and economic exploitation, showcasing the lived experiences of women and ethnic minorities disproportionately affected by these crises. Using an intersectional framework, a close textual analysis of the play reveals its discourse on environmental justice. Key questions include: How does Rotimi address the ecological consequences of colonial and capitalist systems? How does the play amplify marginalized voices in the conversation on environmental degradation? This work contributes to the growing field of inclusive ecocriticism, emphasizing the need for environmental justice to account for socio-economic and cultural contexts. Rotimi’s play emerges as a powerful tool for raising awareness about exploitative practices while advocating for equity-driven environmental activism. By focusing on the perspectives of those most affected, the study underscores the critical role of literature in addressing systemic injustices and fostering transformative change. Rotimi’s work not only critiques harmful systems but also inspires a holistic vision of environmental justice, connecting ecological concerns with the broader fight for social equity

Sophocles’ Antigone in Francophone African Adaptation

    No full text
The presentation focuses on Sylvain Bemba’s Black Wedding Candles for Blessed Antigone, a Francophone African adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone. I focus on Bemba’s representations of both Congo and Burkina Faso through his adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone. In Black Wedding Candles for Blessed Antigone, Bemba adapts Sophocles’ tragedy to examine the assassination of both Patrice Lumumba of Congo and Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso. I contend that Francophone African’s adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone represents a productive medium of engaging and addressing social crises and political instability in Francophone Africa

Contextualizing Inclusion and Connection in an Absurd World: An Analysis of Albert Camus’ The Plague

    No full text
Scholars have extensively analyzed Albert Camus’s The Plaque, while interpreting its narrative through existential and absurdist lenses. However, little literature is recorded on how the novel contextualizes themes of inclusion and human connection amidst an absurd world. This study addresses this gap by examining the dynamics of solidarity and shared resistance among the characters within the framework of Camus’s philosophy of the absurd. The aim is to ex-ray how Camus reconciles the tension between the absurd and the human need for meaning through collective action and emotional bonds. A qualitative methodology is employed, involving a close textual analysis of the study’s sample text to identify instances of inclusion and connection. The study is guided by the theoretical framework of Camusian absurdism, which emphasizes the relationship between rebellion and solidarity as responses to existential uncertainty. Findings reveal that Camus portrays inclusion and connection not merely as acts of resistance against the absurd but as pathways to rediscover a semblance of meaning in life. The communal efforts to combat the plague in Oran underscore an important perspective on the human condition where shared struggles transcend the isolation imposed by absurdity. Contributing to extant academic debate, the study presents new viewpoints on the social and philosophical dimensions of Camus’s work. This reinforces discussions on absurdism and its implications for modern existential challenges in an otherwise indifferent world

History, Annotated Gazetteer, and Bibliography of Ornithology in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo

    Get PDF
Kalimantan comprises nearly three quarters of the island of Borneo and is the place where scientific study of Bornean birds began. We describe the history of bird research in Kalimantan from its beginning, highlighting the ornithologists who explored the region and how their interests and methods changed over time, from a concentration on specimen collection, to examinations of community ecology, to conservation in the face of habitat change and species depletion, to the latest investigations using satellite, genetic, and digital technology. We also highlight some future directions for research, especially the need for more work on basic ecology and biogeography. Following this historical review, we list in a gazetteer every site we could find where ornithologists and birdwatchers have conducted research or documented important records of bird occurrence. The gazetteer includes the latitude and longitude of each site and, in many cases, supplementary information on location, research history, specimen and vocal collections, and associated literature. It is followed by a bibliography of 693 references

    I\u27ll Be There Soon

I’ll Be There Soon is a feature-length screenplay that explores caregiving, family sacrifice, and cultural identity. Amid a brewing tropical storm, an overworked hospice nurse and her teenage daughter get trapped in a dying patient’s home, forced to face the unraveling of their family and the sacrifices caregiving demands. The story draws inspiration from my upbringing in South Texas and witnessing the quiet strength of my mother, a hospice nurse, whose work revealed the unseen emotional and physical toll of caregiving. While not confessional, the screenplay reflects my observations about caregiving and the cultural expectations placed on women in these roles. Through the character of Esmeralda, I wanted to portray the sacrifices inherent in caregiving, particularly the tension between supporting others and maintaining one’s own relationships and well-being. Language and culture are central to this story, with Spanish dialogue woven throughout to capture intimacy, cultural authenticity, and the dynamic between mother and daughter. The story also emphasizes quiet, introspective moments, where emotional shifts unfold through silence and body language rather than dialogue. By focusing on stillness and the way bodies move and think, I aimed to create a story that resonates with the subtleties of everyday life. I’ll Be There Soon is a evocative drama with elements of psychological tension. While grounded in the realism of hospice work and cultural identity, the confined setting and storm- infused urgency add an atmospheric edge, creating moments of thrill and suspense. Ultimately, it is a story about connection, resilience, and the complexities of love
