Sr. Jean Michael Sauntry
Get PDFIn this segment Sr. Jean Michael Sauntry discusses her decision to become a Sister of Saint Francis at Oldenburg, Indiana, after surviving a childhood illness and her mother’s encouragement that “God has a plan for you in the future.” Sr. Jean Michael relates her history as a singer in musicals at Carnegie Hall and her persistence in writing letters to ask the Reverend Mother Marie Dillhoff to enable her to travel to Papua New Guinea to work as a missionary. After being accepted to the missions at Mendi and Tari, Sr. Jean spent more than twenty years teaching elementary and secondary education in Papua New Guinea. One of her fondest memories is teaching Huli natives the English language, and learning Pidgin English herself, in a country with such a vast diversity of languages. She relates how an experience working in a women’s prison prompted her to write letters to the local magistrate to aid in the release of one of the women who was falsely accused. In addition to relating her experiences as an educator, she details the cultural differences and obstacles both the Sisters as well as the native people experienced with the burgeoning intercultural interaction. Specifically, she describes the inherent challenges for women stemming from the patriarchal society in Papua New Guinea, specifically the difficulty for them in adjusting to religious life, professional life, and realizing their true spiritual selves or gifts. Sr. Joan is one of the latter group of Sisters to serve there, from 1995-2000 (the original mission began in 1960), and she goes on to detail her work coordinating the Sisters\u27 initiatives with other missionaries, specifically the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and Capuchin Friars. She also mentions her experiences in traveling the countryside, and the associated dangers and challenges in doing so. Consortial Collaboration in the Cloud: an Innovative Group Implementation of Web-scale Management

High-Symmetry Carbon Cages: Structures and Energetics
No full textThe icosahedral fullerenes form a subset of a larger set of carbon cages that might be called carbon Goldberg polyhedra. These are formed by tiling the triangular faces of an appropriate convex polyhedron with graphenic sheets, and are possible for the three platonic solids that have triangular faces, namely the tetrahedron, the octahedron, and the icosahedron. Euler\u27s criterion is satisfied by the meeting of three, four, or five graphenic faces at a vertex of the embedding figure, yielding either four 3-rings, eight 4-rings, or twelve 5-rings, in addition to some number of 6-rings. The isosahedral case yields the high-symmetry fullerenes, but very little is known to date about the two other cage types. For each geometrical embedding there are two classes of cage, one with Fn2 faces, the other with 3Fn2 faces, where F is the number of faces in the embedding polyhedron, and n is a positive integer. We present explicit geometrical constructions of the first several orders of such cages, and explore their energies, spin states, and optimum geometries using semi-empirical methods and density functional theory
