    Disambiguating the Effect of Interpolated Testing on the Build-up of Proactive Interference During Learning

    Students frequently report difficulty learning information presented at the end of long study sequences. Prior research has shown that information presented earlier in a study sequence interferes with learning of information presented later in a study sequence, but that interpolating study with testing can serve to protect against such buildup of proactive interference (PI). Nonetheless, it remains debated whether interpolated testing improves encoding or retrieval of information presented in later portions of study. In the present study (N =96), students learned five interrelated lists of words. Students were always tested on the fifth list and then again during a final cumulative test. We used a 2 x 2 design to vary whether or not students were tested on the first four lists (i.e., testing versus control) and also the rate of presentation of individual words (4s versus 10s per word). We found that learning of the fifth list was impaired due to PI in the absence of previous testing (i.e., for lists 1 through 4) at both short and long presentation rates. However, during a final cumulative test that required participants to recall all study words, non-tested participants recalled words from the fifth list as well as tested participants, but only if they had studied words for 10s. Taken together, our results indicate the PI during learning arises largely due to constraints imposed by initial memory tests (i.e., during retrieval), and that an encoding manipulation can serve to overcome PI during later tests that do not impose similar constraints on retrieval

    Model Online Educational Platform for Health Services

    Introduction: According to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), ensuring student access to needed physical and mental health care improves attendance, behavior, and achievement in the classroom. Academic achievement is indicative of overall well-being of youth and a primary predictor of adult health outcomes. The need to foster health and well-being within the educational environment for all students is apparent. Context: In 2015, the United Nations created the Sustainable Development Agenda- a call to action which included 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aimed to improve the lives of people everywhere and ensure a viable future for mankind. In response, The Foundation for Global Community Health, partnered with HOPSports physical education company, created the first online platform to educate the worlds youth in order to achieve SDG #3: Good Health and Well Being. Objective: Create a technologically basic yet well curated, interactive, and engaging educational platform that was modifiable to be locally and culturally relevant as well as accessible by anyone in the world with an internet connection for free. Secondly, to assess the efficacy of this platform at educating teens on Health Services, a subcategory of SDG #3. Design: Quasi-Experimental. Setting: Physical education classrooms with an internet connection. Participants: Teenage students, 13-16 years old. Methods: 10 educational guidelines were created to represent universal cornerstones for teen education on health services. One guideline, “Identify types of health screenings at school or in the community” was chosen as the subject of the novel online lesson plan. Results: https://brain-breaks.com/ went live in September 2017 providing educators with this tool for free. Anticipated results include the efficacy of message delivery and content absorption determined by knowledge assessments in the form of engaging quizzes, puzzles, and games, as well as a UN developed personal Global Sustainability Index scores. Conclusion: This online educational tool for health services pools resources from global experts and provide substantive education supplemental to what can be learned in classroom. It is a response to the UN SDG’s – to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages

    Employment of the Novel Laser Direct Alignment Radiation Reduction Technique (DARRT) for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Access

    Context: Patients with large staghorn calculi are commonly treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). PCNL access can be technically challenging and has potential to result in significant radiation exposure to both the patient and surgeon. In an attempt to reduce radiation exposure during PCNL, a novel laser Direct Alignment Radiation Reduction Technique (DARRT), combined with ureteroscopic direct visualization, was developed. With this technique renal access is guided by a laser beam sight placed upon the C-arm to assist in proper alignment during needle insertion. Objective: The purpose of this study was to utilize the novel technique and review the operative outcomes in the initial 15 patients who underwent PCNL. Design: The surgeries were performed at a large academic medical center by a single surgeon. Methods: The first 15 patients who underwent the Laser DARRT were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data were recorded for each patient such as stone burden, degree of hydro- nephrosis, and skin to stone distance. Primary surgical outcomes were fluoroscopy time required for percutaneous renal access and total procedure fluoroscopy time. Secondary outcomes included operative time, estimated blood loss, retreatment rate and stone free status. Patients with residual fragments 4 mm were considered to be stone free. Results: There were 8 male and 7 female patients. Median patient age was 44 years (range 24-82) and stone burden staghorn calculi. The grade of hydronephrosis was minimal in 40% of patients, mild in 14%, and moderate in 46%. The skin to stone distance was 12 cm (5.1-17.4). Access fluoroscopy time was 7 seconds (1.6- 34.5) and total fluoroscopy time was 10 seconds (5-52). The operative time was 180 minutes (118-431), the estimated blood loss was 75 mL (25-350) and the hospital stay was 3 days (1-7). 12 out of 15 patients (80%) were rendered stone free postoperatively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the safety and efficacy of the Laser Direct Alignment Radiation Reduction Technique for PCNL. Using this technique, total fluoroscopy time was reduced to a median of 10 seconds. This technique employs conventional fluoroscopic techniques which are familiar to most urologists and allows the surgeon to significantly reduce radiation exposure to their patients as well as operating personnel
