Education 20/20: Visions of a New Learning World
We are in the midst of a learning revolution. During the past few years, learning has become increasingly collaborative, global, mobile, modular, informal, immediate, self-directed, open, blended, visual, hands-on, ubiquitous, and personal. Instructors today may be called upon to take on many new roles such as curators, counselors, consultants, concierges, and cultivators of learning. In this session, Curt Bonk will define 20 new roles for instructors and 20 principles of instruction which support these roles; all while providing a plethora of examples of how these roles and principles can liven up lectures and motivate and engage students in their learning. Activin and BMP Signaling Mechanics in Myogenic Cells
The Activin and BMP signaling pathways exert reciprocal effects on myogenesis and skeletal muscle regeneration after injury. Signal transduction in both pathways is mediated by ligand- induced activation of transcriptional regulators called SMAD proteins, with Activins leading to phosphorylation of SMAD2/3 and BMPs leading to phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/8. These ligands bind to their own type I receptors but can also compete for shared type II receptors (ACVR2A and/or ACVR2B). However, it is unclear how these pathways interact in skeletal muscle progenitor cells. To address this deficiency, we investigated the effects of the ligands BMP2 and Activin-A on C2C12 cells, which are an immortalized mouse myoblast cell line with myogenic potential, using a sequence of pre-treatment and co-treatment assays followed by western blot analyses to examine the activation level of their respective SMAD proteins. As expected, treatment with exogenous BMP2 or Activin A led to phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/8 and SMAD2/3, respectively. Moreover, pre-treatment of C2C12 cells with Activin-A before BMP2 delivery resulted in an attenuated phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/8; this effect seems to be specific to Activin ligands, though, since the converse relationship was not observed with respect to phosphorylation of SMAD2/3. Interestingly, seemingly contradictory results were observed when Activin-A and BMP2 were delivered to C2C12 cells simultaneously; this co-treatment scenario results in a higher level of SMAD1/5/8 phosphorylation than delivery of either ligand alone. Ongoing experiments seek to elucidate the mechanism(s) impacting the cellular responses under sequential versus simultaneous activation by Activin and BMP ligands. A better understanding of these mechanisms could lead to novel therapeutic strategies for regeneration of skeletal muscle tissue after injury
The Indianapolis Archdiocesan Newspaper in the Raymond T. Bosler Years, 1947-1976
This chapter deals with Msgr. Bosler’s relations with two archbishops-publishers with very different approaches with regard to their editor’s independence. Bosler held that a diocesan paper ought not be a company newsletter filled with nothing but what is of “good report” of the Church, but rather deal with the pressing public foreign and domestic issues. Under Bosler’s editorial hand, that meant the Cold War, NATO, the United Nations, immigration, medical care for the aged and disabled, right to work laws, race, housing, McCarthyism, the John Birch Society, Vietnam, the women’s rights movement, and more.
In conducting the “Question Box” for so many years, Bosler dealt with the laity’s concerns he judged both trivial (the proper disposal of religious articles) and substantive (no salvation outside the Catholic Church). During and after the ‘50s and ‘60s, thanks in part to Alfred Kinsey, frank discussion of sex made its way onto the public agenda and into newspaper pages as never before. Abortion, birth control, homosexuality, AIDS—all now grist to the journalist’s mill--found their way into Bosler’s Criterion.
A second chapter on Bosler’s life and career, beginning with his dispatches on the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council, 1962-1965, is also available. As with his liberal views on other matters that had attracted charges of “socialism,” his championing of the council’s progressivism found him out of step with conservative readers and later Archbishop George Biskup, not least in regard to his views on moral theology
Towards Multi-Modality Therapy for Marfan Syndrome: Synergistic Effect of Angiotensin and TRPC4 Receptor Blockade on Ascending Aortic Aneurysms
Background:
Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disease that commonly presents with aortopathy. While promising therapies have been studied, complete attenuation of MFS-induced aortic aneurysms in the clinical arena has been elusive. The presence of significant, not-yet described MFS signaling pathways has been suggested as a reason for the less than ideal clinical response to single drug therapy. Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels have emerged as likely regulators of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) activity. In this regard, they are abundantly found in VSMCs and are associated with increased matrix metalloproteinase 9 activity. The current study seeks to explore the role of TRP channels in MFS.
Methods:
A Fbn1C1039G/+ heterozygous mouse, with a mutation in fibrillin-1, was supplemented with angiotensin II (4.5 mg/kg/day) to accelerate aneurysmal formation. Mice analyzed were wild type (wt) (saline +/- angiotensin II) and heterozygous (saline +/- angiotensin II). Quantitative PCR and western blotting was used to examine differential expression of TRP channels across the various cohorts. The TRPC4 antagonist, ML204 (10mg/kg/day), was given daily during two weeks of angiotensin II infusion. Mice were echoed before and after to assess aortic diameter.
Results:
Quantitative PCR of the accelerated model revealed a near 10-fold increase in TRPC4 transcription with respect to wt mice. ML204 and losartan worked synergistically to ameliorate aortic dilation.
Conclusions:
These studies suggest a complementary role for TRPC4 in MFS-induced aortic pathology. Antagonism of this novel target shows promise toward multi-drug therapy for the treatment of aortic aneurysms in MFS
Novel Methods and Considerations for Addressing Aortic Arch Hypoplasia and Coarctation
Numerous surgical approaches have been proposed to treat aortic arch hypoplasia (Figures 1&2). These repairs can vary based upon patient age (i.e. neonatal vs larger child), and therefore the mobility of the aorta. Most repairs can be classified into two categories - those that incorporate a patch and those that do not. The decision between repairs remains largely experiential, rather than empirical, due to the limited number of reported outcomes. We report early outcomes from a novel surgical paradigm for arch hypoplasia utilizing a beating-heart, modified aortic arch advancement (with anterior patch, Figure 1B) for all neonates and a beating-heart, sliding arch aortoplasty (all-autologous repair, Figure 2) for all children beyond infancy. Additionally, we present computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling data to better understand the hemodynamic consequences associated with a patch utilization during neonatal aortic arch advancement (Figure 3)

Handling Challenging Student Situations
Today’s classroom can be a challenging learning environment. In this session we will share best practices, suggestions, and Marian University resources to support student learning environments. We will explore setting boundaries; what to do when students become agitated or hostile (in person or online); classroom disruptions; health issues (anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, chronic physical issues, etc.); and requests for accommodations. We will discuss identifying students who require additional assistance and share suggestions for student referrals to support services
Bodies in Play: Shakespeare\u27s Depiction of Illness
Two members of Marian University\u27s Department of English, Marcia Eppich-Harris, Ph.D., and Diane Prenatt, Ph.D. gave a presentation entitled Bodies in Play: Shakespeare\u27s Depiction of Illness. The presentation explored medicine during Shakespeare\u27s lifetime and looked at the portrayal of illness within his work. The presentation coincided with the National Library of Medicine exhibition, And There\u27s the Humor of it : Shakespeare and the Four Humors, which the Mother Theresa Hackelmeier Memorial Library hosted from October 24, 2017 - December 2, 2017
