Negative genetic testing does not exclude the diagnosis of CdLS, which should remain in the differential diagnosis with antenatal findings of frontal bossing, micromelia, and first trimester IUGR

Get PDFThis chapter deals with the Indianapolis Catholic press in its various guises under a variety of managers from the Gilded Age to just after World War II. Given the damage of Martin Luther’s printed placards and pamphlets, the Catholic Church has never been completely at peace with either books or newspapers. But to tell its story, it found it had to produce its own publications. The first newspaper written for Indianapolis Catholics, the Western Citizen, 1876-1882, was not sponsored by the diocese, but since its target audience was the Irish-Catholics of the city and its environs, it qualified well-enough. Lay-owned and edited, it defended the Church against Protestants, but was willing to criticize priests and bishops, too. The first official paper, the New Record, 1883-1899, lasted longer and was remarkable for the anti-Semitism of its French editor. After it failed, the Catholic Columbian Record, of Columbus, Ohio, filled the gap by providing an Indiana section. In 1910, Patrick Joseph O’Mahony founded, with others, and edited the Indiana Catholic and Record until 1932
Educational Technology in Top-Tier Science Education Research: A Literature Review
Get PDFAccess, implementation, and teacher attitudes about technology in the classroom have increased in recent years. While numerous reports (Purcell, Heaps, Buchanan, & Friedrich, 2013; CompTIA, n.d.; Schacter, 1999) cite the impact of technology broadly, there are limited reports dedicated to exploring the impact of technology implementation in science courses. This review examines the technology tools implemented in formal and informal K-12 science settings published in top-tier science journals from 2010 to 2016. Findings include the most commonly studied technology tools in physical science, life science, and earth/space science disciplines, as well as their reported impacts on student achievement, dispositions, and student-teacher interactions. While challenges are evident, technology integration in the teaching and learning of science across disciplines has made many significant positive impacts

World Neurosurgery: Case Reports Surgical Management of Trigeminal Neuralgia in Children

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a well-recognized facial pain syndrome. Discrete forms with disparate pain symptoms include TN1 and TN2, however, atypical facial pain includes neuralgiform pain along a spectrum. The majority of TN is diagnosed in the adult population. Case reports and series in children present TN as a similar diagnosis which can be similarly treated as in adults. This manuscript reviews pertinent literature and presents two pediatric TN cases successfully treated with microvascular decompression (MVD). CASE DESCRIPTION:
Two pediatric patients (ages 12 and 15) were identified with TN that was refractory to previous medical therapy. The patients were both deemed appropriate surgical candidates and were treated with MVD to manage their TN. TN compression was arterial in both cases and involved portions of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. Patient 1 was found to be pain-free 6 months following the procedure. Patient 2 was pain-free immediately following the procedure and has since been weaned off preoperative symptomatic management. The most recent follow-up is 12 and 8 months, respectively, with continued pain freedom. CONCLUSIONS:
There are few reports on the effectiveness of MVD in the pediatric population for the management of TN. Supporting literature, as well as the cases presented, demonstrate that MVD is an effective treatment for pediatric patients in managing their TN. Furthermore, there appears to be minimal side effects, with excellent pain relief with MVD in this patient populatio
The Effects of Sexual Dimorphism on Toxic Prey Avoidance in the Chinese Praying Mantis, Tenodera sinensis
Get PDFThis experiment strives to investigate if sex based behaviors in praying mantid feeding habits hold true when sexual dimorphism is not obvious in juvenile mantids Sensitivity to bitter tastes provides an important means for animals to detect various toxic compounds in food (Wooding et al.2006). In predators, taste sensitivity also allows animals to exploit nutritious but toxic food sources by monitoring the consumption of compounds that may cause illness or death (Wooding et al. 2006). Studies on the Chinese praying mantis, Tenodera sinensis, show that the mantids will wipe their mouths, shake, and reject bitter tasting toxic prey when it is encountered (Carle et al. 2015). Adult male mantids were found to have a more exaggerated response, lower level of acceptance, and reduced consumption of bitter prey compared to females who have higher nutritional requirements due to their larger bodies and reproductive cycles (Carle et al. 2015). A difference in juvenile mantid feeding behavior based on sex has not been observed (Paradise and Stamp, 1991)

No full textBACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) is a complicated disease that can result from a number of disease states in addition to typical cancerous processes. There are many treatment options for NHL. Typically, Rituximab, an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, has been the mainstay for treatment, either alone or in combination with other treatment options. This review aimed to summarize associated infectious processes and NHL as well as treatment options. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to determine the treatment options of NHL. This information has been summarized by treatment type. In addition, infectious processes that lead to increased incidence of NHL have also been reviewed and discussed. FINDINGS: The treatment approach varies for each patient and is dependent on type and staging of the disease. There are many singular and combination therapies available for NHL. While Rituximab remains as the first line of treatment for NHL, other drugs and therapy options are being utilized and researched to create even better approaches. Infectious processes have been found to be related to the development of NHL. These include HIV, EBV, HLTV-I, HCV, and others that are still being researched. CONCLUSION: Treatment of NHL is an area that has been extensively researched and is still being studied. Many patients will need subsequent treatment plans following recurrence of NHL, which is why ongoing development and refinement of these therapies is critical. In addition, a better understanding of infectious disease processes that can lead to NHL is very important in prevention and early detection
