Elderly Motion Analysis to Estimate Emotion: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
This paper presents a systematic review focusing on motion analysis-based emotion estimation in the elderly. Addressing a critical concern, it highlights the challenge of effectively monitoring emotions in older adults and emphasizes the potential development of serious disorders resulting from emotional neglect. The study underscores the importance of emotional well-being in care facilities, where the willingness of elderly individuals to receive care is closely tied to their emotional state. Health practitioners often encounter difficulties when elderly individuals resist care due to emotional dissatisfaction, making monitoring changes in emotional states essential and necessitating comprehensive care records. Through an exhaustive examination of existing literature, the paper suggests that motion-based emotion recognition shows promise in addressing this challenge. Utilizing the PRISMA protocol, the study conducts a qualitative analysis of the impact of motion analysis on emotion estimation. It outlines the current methodologies employed in research and reveals a significant correlation between body motion cues and emotional states in the elderly. Furthermore, it positions motion-based emotion estimation as a viable solution for addressing emotional well-being in older adults and offers guidelines for researchers interested in this area. Based on our study we consider the first review of this kind on motion-based emotion estimation for the elderly, providing insights into potential advancements in addressing emotional well-being in this demographic.journal articl

Performance Evaluation of Multipath TCP Video Streaming on LEO Satellite/Cellular Networks

    Get PDF
Video streaming makes most of Internet traffic nowadays, being transported over Hypertext Transfer Protocol/ Transmission Control Protocol (HTTP/TCP). Being the predominant transport protocol, TCP stack performance in transporting video streams has become paramount, specially with regard to MultiPath Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) innovation and multiple client device interfaces currently available. Recently, Low Orbit Satellite networks have become available as a way to cover remote locations where cellular coverage is spotty at best with Internet access. In this paper, we evaluate video streaming performance via cellular and LEO links. Such scenario is commonplace in geographical areas where cellular communication is unreliable, such as disaster and conflict torn situations. We provide an extensive analysis of Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) TCP variant, as well as CUBIC when transporting video streams over terrestrial cellular network (LTE) and LEO (Starlink) access networks. We use network performance level, as well video quality level metrics to characterize quality of multipath video streaming over TCP variants.journal articl

Disease Estimation Based on Gait Images by Separating Individual Features Using Variational Autoencoder

    Get PDF
With the ageing of society, the number of patients with gait disturbance is increasing. Lumbar canal stenosis (LCS) and cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) are representative diseases that cause gait disturbance. This study proposes a method to recognize LCS and CSM using the patient’s gait video. However, the gait images of a patient contain not only disease features but also individual features such as body shape and hairstyle. Such individual features may reduce the accuracy of disease estimation. Therefore, we aim to achieve highly accurate disease estimation by separating and removing individual features from disease features using a variational autoencoder (VAE). In addition, we performed personal authentication on the latent variables extracted by the proposed method and verified whether it performs the classification of individual features.conference pape

Diff-Control: A Stateful Diffusion-based Policy for Imitation Learning

    Get PDF
While imitation learning provides a simple and effective framework for policy learning, acquiring consistent action during robot execution remains a challenging task. Existing approaches primarily focus on either modifying the action representation at data curation stage or altering the model itself, both of which do not fully address the scalability of consistent action generation. To overcome this limitation, we introduce the Diff-Control policy, which utilizes a diffusion-based model to learn action representation from a state-space modeling viewpoint. We demonstrate that diffusion-based policies can acquire statefulness through a Bayesian formulation facilitated by ControlNet, leading to improved robustness and success rates. Our experimental results demonstrate the significance of incorporating action statefulness in policy learning, where Diff-Control shows improved performance across various tasks. Specifically, Diff-Control achieves an average success rate of 72% and 84% on stateful and dynamic tasks, respectively. Notably, Diff-Control also shows consistent performance in the presence of perturbations, outperforming other state-of-the-art methods that falter under similar conditions.

Runoff and infiltration characteristics of rainfall and snowmelt water on a model embankment slope composed of sandy soil simulating vegetation works

In this study, a model embankment slope simulating vegetation work was constructed with sandy soil to clarify the runoff and infiltration characteristics of rainfall in summer and snowmelt water in spring. The soil boxes that were used had structures to collect water that infiltrated the embankment slope and water that ran off the slope separately. The soil boxes were mounted on a load cell to make it possible to measure the mass change of the entire equipment. Based on the measurement results during the summer season, it was confirmed that the slope with turf work allowed much rainfall to run off as surface water compared to the bare ground slope. Based on the measurement results during the snowmelt season, it was observed that snowmelt water could not deeply infiltrate the bare ground slope, the extreme surface layer became saturated, and the sediment flowed.journal articl

“Crossing the Border” of the Great Plan for the Transformation of Nature from the Soviet Union to Japan

    Get PDF
This study examines Japan’s movement toward the Great Plan for the Transformation of Nature, which was implemented in the Soviet Union until the mid-1950s. Since the Great Plan was comprehensive in nature as a national land development program, it drew considerable interest from Japanese intellectuals in various scientific fields, such as river engineering, geography, meteorology, agronomy, genetics, Russian culture, Soviet affairs, military, and government agencies. Newspapers and journals belonging to a wide range of categories published numerous articles on the plan, peaking in 1952 and 1955. These articles proposed characteristic discussions of the Great Plan that were associated with major topics and events of the same period, such as the United States’ TVA program, T. D. Lysenko’s involvement in the afforestation program, the introduction of his nestsowing method in Japan, the propaganda of the peaceful use of nuclear power, and Japan’s Science Council members’ visit to the Soviet Union in 1955. This study examines three types of discussions based on those articles: (1) those focusing on the issues of the introduction of the Great Plan to Japan, (2) those focusing on the imitability (practice) of the Great Plan in Japan or using the Soviet case as a reference for Japan’s land planning, and (3) those dealing with the political aspect of the Great Plan, especially propaganda for pacifism. By examining these issues, this study explores the Soviet Union’s intellectual influence on Japan through the grandiose scientific enterprise of the transformation of nature.journal articl

Investigation of the Contribution of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) K Peptide in Enhancing the Expression of Lipase from Sphingobacterium sp.: In vitro and in Silico Studies

    Get PDF
Sphingobacterium sp. AB3 lipase is a psychrophilic enzyme with optimal lipolytic activity at pH 7 and 15°C. The cold-adapted properties of the lipase render it suitable for various low-temperature industrial applications such as biodiesel production, detergent formulation, and non-thermal food processing. Recent studies have shown that co-expression of LEA K peptide with AB3 lipase resulted in enhanced protein expression in Escherichia coli. In this study, the purified AB3 lipase was characterized by substrate specificity, followed by tertiary structure prediction of the lipase and LEA K peptide using SWISS-MODEL and PEP-FOLD 3.5, respectively. Molecular docking studies were conducted to study the lipase-LEA K interactions using ClusPro and lipase-olive oil interactions with and without LEA K using Autodock Vina. Based on the findings, AB3 lipase showed the highest preference for olive oil with a lipase-specific activity of 153.3 U/mg. In the presence of LEA K, the binding affinity of AB3 lipase with olive oil improved from -4.7 to -7.0, kcal/moL with increased hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding with catalytic residues of the lipase. Overall, understanding the interaction between the AB3 lipase and LEA K peptide offers valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying the improved stability and affinity of the protein-peptide complex.journal articl
