Active Control of Random Lasing Using the Optical Trapping Technique
A method to control the random laser action of particle-dispersed media using the optical trapping technique is proposed. By focusing a trapping beam into a small region of the scattering medium, some of the scattering particles are trapped in that region, causing the distribution of scatterers inhomogeneous. According to the experimental results, the emission intensity of the spectral peak varies, depending on whether the trapping beam is on or off. Recent Challenges for Foreign English Teachers in Japan
Japanese students are suffering from English learning. Data show that Japanese students fail to demonstrate desirable English proficiency despite decades-long efforts and promotion from the Japanese government. Foreign (native) teachers have helped with the development of English teaching in Japan in many respects, serving not only as teachers conveying language knowledge to students but also as representatives of foreign cultures helping students to appreciate incentives to learn about intercultural communication. The main emphasis of this study is to identify the problems with foreign English teachers in Japan to see whether there are any commonalities in the opinions of foreign EFL teachers related to cross-cultural challenges, labor concerns, workloads/working conditions, psychological and emotional well-being, which may have a negative impact on English education. The findings of surveys and semi-conducted interviews revealed that teachers’ perceptions of their teaching approaches were generally acceptable and unproblematic, and they seem to have received fair evaluation and support from their colleagues. The stress and demands on teachers were often excessive with increased administration, which consumed the energy of English teachers while not contributing to the improvement of teaching effectiveness. Although foreign teachers generally have positive outlooks on their own experience, their advice tends not to be taken seriously or given credit for their innovations or accomplishments. Cultural conflicts sometimes cause trouble for them. Foreign teachers should learn about Japanese culture and try to change their perspective in thinking to achieve a better understanding of intercultural communication.journal articl
Real-Time Monitoring of Adsorption-Induced Scrolling of Colloidal Inorganic Nanosheets
Inorganic nanotubes have attracted much attention due to their unique physicochemical properties. Nanotubes can be prepared by scrolling exfoliated nanosheets under ambient conditions. However, how the nanosheet scrolled in its colloidal state has not been experimentally visualized. In this paper, we directly observed the scrolling process of nanosheets upon adsorption of organic cations. Exfoliated flat nanosheets of niobate and clay in aqueous colloids were found to scroll by adding organic cations, such as exfoliation reagents, to the colloids. Employment of cationic stilbazolium dye enabled in situ observation of the dye adsorption and scrolling by optical microscopy based on changes in color and morphology of the nanosheets. The scrolling was promoted for nanosheets adsorbed with a stilbazolium dye with a longer alkyl chain, suggesting that the interaction between the hydrophobic parts of the dye cations is the driving force of the scrolling. This finding should encourage research on the formation of nanotubes from nanosheets and also provides important guidelines for the selection of appropriate exfoliation reagents when exfoliating nanosheets from layered crystals.journal articl

Visualizing Ribbon‐to‐Ribbon Heterogeneity of Chemically Unzipped Wide Graphene Nanoribbons by Silver Nanowire‐Based Tip‐Enhanced Raman Scattering Microscopy
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), a quasi-one-dimensional form of graphene, have gained tremendous attention due to their potential for next-generation nanoelectronic devices. The chemical unzipping of carbon nanotubes is one of the attractive fabrication methods to obtain single-layered GNRs (sGNRs) with simple and large-scale production. The authors recently found that unzipping from double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), rather than single- or multi-walled, results in high-yield production of crystalline sGNRs. However, details of the resultant GNR structure, as well as the reaction mechanism, are not fully understood due to the necessity of nanoscale spectroscopy. In this regard, silver nanowire-based tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is applied for single GNR analysis and investigated ribbon-to-ribbon heterogeneity in terms of defect density and edge structure generated through the unzipping process. The authors found that sGNRs originated from the inner walls of DWNTs showed lower defect densities than those from the outer walls. Furthermore, TERS spectra of sGNRs exhibit a large variety in graphitic Raman parameters, indicating a large variation in edge structures. This work at the single GNR level reveals, for the first time, ribbon-to-ribbon heterogeneity that can never be observed by diffraction-limited techniques and provides deeper insights into unzipped GNR structure as well as the DWNT unzipping reaction mechanism.journal articl
Effect of nonlinearity induced by atomic switch in Ag/Ag2S nanoparticles on performance of in-materio reservoir computing
A random network of Ag/Ag2S nanoparticles (NPs) was used as a physical system in reservoir computing (RC) because the network has nonlinear and dynamical characteristics. Ag/Ag2S NPs were synthesized by the modified Brust–Schiffrin method. Atomic switching among the NPs caused nonlinear dynamical behavior of the random network. The Fourier transform of output signals indicated that the generated harmonics were far higher with a larger amplitude of the input sine wave because the atomic switching occurred only at high bias voltages. Higher accuracy was achieved in the Boolean logic RC task because of the nonlinearity originating from switching. These findings suggest that nonlinearity plays a fundamental role in the design and implementation of RC devices.journal articl

The objective is to introduce a systematic approach for evaluating the quality of generated sentence suggestions, allowing for assessments comparable to caregiver evaluations. Our proposed framework aims to provide a comprehensive and standardized method for evaluating the efficacy of sentence suggestions. By establishing a systematic evaluation process, we seek to bridge the gap between automated assessments and human evaluation, contributing to the development of more reliable and accurate models in the field of nursing care record applications.
During the initial phase of our study, we used a Markov model to generate sentence suggestions within the context of nursing care record applications. These suggestions were then compared systematically against ground truth care records, serving as a reference for accuracy and relevance. Furthermore, we conducted a human evaluation to obtain caregivers’ opinions and establish a ground truth for the assessment process. By comparing the model-generated suggestions with ground truth care records and expert evaluations, our study aims to assess the performance and applicability of the Markov model comprehensively.
Based on this foundation, our study evaluated the generated sentence suggestions using several existing metrics. The outcomes of these metrics were then systematically compared against human evaluations, and the results were meticulously observed. Given the unique characteristics of care records, we found that the current evaluation metrics fell short of delivering satisfactory assessments.
The intricacies of healthcare documentation necessitate a more nuanced approach to evaluation. Our findings underscore the need for customised metrics that can capture the specific intricacies and nuances of sentence suggestions within the context of care records.
In conclusion, our proposed evaluation metric outperforms several current evaluation methods in assessing sentence suggestion generation within care record applications. The meticulous comparison against existing metrics revealed the limitations of conventional approaches in adequately capturing the intricacies of healthcare documentation.
