Trigger Circuit Board Design for Coordinated EEG, Motion, and Eye Gazing Recording in Two Person: A System Integration Approach

    Get PDF
Integrative data analysis, which involves the simultaneous recording of EEG, motion, and eye gazing in humans, is increasingly recognized for its potential to yield new scientific insights. To establish these simultaneous measurements, signal synchronization of multiple time courses is necessary, time data from different measurement instruments must be managed finely, and time offsets must be corrected. However, such accurate time management from the triggers requires a fine design of circuit boards with the integrated transistor-transistor logic signal voltage. This study presents a design concept and mechanism for a trigger circuit, demonstrating that the proposed experimental system effectively addresses these challenges. A custom trigger circuit board, combined with a microcontroller, was developed to handle voltage signals and ensure seamless synchronization between different devices. The trigger signal output from the circuit board can be controlled and demonstrated through system integration across multiple measurement instruments. It should be noted that the accuracy of trigger signal output may be influenced in part by the system clock of the operating system, but the integrated trigger circuit board and the measurement system enable precise and reliable synchronous measurements, with the potential for further synchronous analysis.journal articl

Development and application of method for controlling quality of reinforced soil wall construction using the “Reinforced Soil Wall Checklist”

    No full text
It has been about half a century since the first reinforced soil wall was constructed in Japan, and it is now widely used in the general public. However, with the increase in the number of construction results, deformation of the wall panels has been reported in some of the reinforced soil walls constructed in Hokkaido. Therefore, we have organized the actual situation of reinforced soil walls constructed by the Hokkaido Development Bureau, and established a forum (hereinafter referred to as “Reinforced Soil Wall WAKATTEN-KAI”) where people involved with reinforced soil walls in Hokkaido (client, design consultants, contractors, reinforced soil wall manufacturers, Kitami Institute of Technology, and the Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region) can share their awareness of each other's work. As a result of discussions at the Reinforced Soil Wall Checklist Meeting, the effectiveness of the reinforced soil wall checklist was confirmed in the work and construction of reinforced soil walls ordered by the Hokkaido Development Bureau (hereafter referred to as the Development Bureau) based on the recognition that the checklist is effective in ensuring quality, in which items that should be shared by both contractors and receivers are mutually verified. This paper describes the background of the reinforced soil wall checklist as a tool for building cooperative relationships and encouraging dialogue between the client and the contractor.journal articl

Temporal and spatial analysis of activity patterns: A case study of neighborhood park in the Orio–Hibikino area, Kitakyushu, Japan

    Get PDF
This research explores how the park's design features and temporal conditions, such as weather and season, affect user activity in parks near neighborhood communities. The hypothesis is that user behavior patterns are influenced by complex interactions between spatial and non-spatial characteristics, including the park's physical layout, park features, demographic composition, weather conditions, and temporal variations. This study has two main goals: to analyze the spatial distribution of activities and temporal variations of activities occurring in walking paths, open areas, playground amenities, and benches across four parks located in the neighborhood communities of Kitakyushu using real-world datasets collected over summer and autumn in 2024. Activity patterns have been evaluated by user spatial patterns with similar activity and location and relabel activity zone and park feature performances. Results reveal that certain locations emerge as activity nodes or “hotspots” for particular activities, depending on the season and time of day, emphasizing the dynamic interaction between park design and user engagement. This study provides insights supporting the adaptability and responsive approach to park design and planning, considering both spatial temporal dynamics in understanding and optimizing park usage patterns.journal articl

Adversarial control of synchronization in complex oscillator networks

    Get PDF
This study investigates perturbation strategies inspired by adversarial attack principles from deep learning, designed to control synchronization dynamics through strategically crafted weak perturbations. We propose a gradient-based optimization method that identifies small phase perturbations to dramatically enhance or suppress collective synchronization in Kuramoto oscillator networks. Our approach formulates synchronization control as an optimization problem, computing gradients of the order parameter with respect to oscillator phases to determine optimal perturbation directions. Results demonstrate that extremely small phase perturbations applied to network oscillators can achieve significant synchronization control across diverse network architectures. Our analysis reveals that synchronization enhancement is achievable across various network sizes, while synchronization suppression becomes particularly effective in larger networks, with effectiveness scaling favorably with the network size. The method is systematically validated on canonical model networks including scale-free and small-world topologies and real-world networks representing power grids and brain connectivity patterns. This adversarial framework represents a novel paradigm for synchronization management by introducing deep learning concepts to networked dynamical systems.journal articl

Classification of Heat Transfer Coefficient Using Deep Learning Incorporated Boiling Images

    Get PDF
Boiling cooling has been used as a cooling method for electronic devices due to its high heat transfer coefficient (HTC). The regularity of the boiling phenomenon is a crucial factor in the development of more efficient cooling systems. To develop such systems, it is essential to accurately measure the HTC, which is closely related to the boiling phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a method for predicting the HTC of two different heat transfer surfaces using deep learning with boiling sound and boiling images as inputs. The proposed method achieves an accurate improvement of 2.0% and 16.7% compared to models using only boiling sound and boiling images as input, respectively.conference pape

Hindered cracking in colloidal suspension coatings via evaporation-driven lyotropic liquid crystals

    Get PDF
We demonstrate that lyotropic liquid crystalline (LC) phases, formed by the molecular interactions between 1-glyceryl monooleyl ether (GME) and water, offer new pathways for producing crack-free particulate films from colloidal suspensions. Drying experiments on titanium dioxide-ethanol-water-GME suspension systems revealed a 15-fold increase in the critical cracking thickness, above which cracks spontaneously evolve, compared to suspensions without additives. Contrary to previous theoretical predictions based on capillary forces, the critical thicknesses ethanol-lean suspensions increased with higher particle packing volume fractions in the dried films. We developed a new phenomenological model that incorporates the formation of viscoelastic LC phases and found it to be in quantitative agreement with measurements. This suggests a versatile route for delaying cracking by introducing thermodynamically metastable phases of amphiphilic molecules. The evaporation-induced isotropic-LC transition was further verified by numerical predictions of the compositional trajectories on the phase diagram.journal articl

Observation of Out-of-Plane Antidamping Torque at the Platinum/Permalloy Interface

    Get PDF
Achieving electrical control of ferromagnets without magnetic fields is crucial for the dense integration of nanodevices in modern memory and computing technologies. Current methods using spin orbit torques from the spin Hall effect and interfacial Rashba effect are limited to in-plane magnetized ferromagnets. Out-of-plane antidamping torque is essential for the electrical only control of ferromagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In this work, we report the observation of out-of-plane polarized spin currents in platinum/permalloy bilayers, linked to interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the interface between two metallic layers, as revealed by polarized neutron reflectometry. In-plane angle-resolved spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements characterized the out-of-plane damping-like torque, constituting about 12% of the total torque in ultrathin Pt films, which vanishes when platinum thickness exceeds 4 nm, confirming its interfacial origin. This interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy-induced torque is significant compared to the bulk spin Hall effect, which can be obtained in a typical heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayer. This advancement holds promise for enhancing the efficiency and reliability of spin orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM), spin Hall oscillators, and other spintronic devices.journal articl
