    Structural coloration and epicuticular wax properties of the distinctive glaucous leaves of Encephalartos horridus

    The leaves of the cycad Encephalartos horridus exhibit a conspicuous glaucous appearance, attributed to the presence of epicuticular wax. However, the molecular and optical bases of this coloration have not been scientifically explained. In this study, we conducted a detailed analysis of the epicuticular wax composition, combined with RNA-seq and de novo transcriptome assembly, to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Additionally, Monte Carlo multi-layer (MCML) simulations were performed to model light interactions and explore the structural coloration generated by the epicuticular wax crystals. The wax was found to be predominantly composed of nonacosan-10-ol, forming tubular crystals that enhance reflectance in the long-wavelength UV to blue light range. However, the microstructure alone is not sufficient to produce the glaucous appearance; it arises from the interplay between the wax crystals and the underlying dark tissues rich in chlorophyll. These findings provide insights into the evolutionary adaptations of cycads to UV exposure and contribute to a broader understanding of plant surface lipid biosynthesis and structural coloration, with potential applications in biomimetic material design.journal articl

    Asymmetric self-organization from a symmetric film by phase separation

    Self-organization realizes various nanostructures to control material properties such as superconducting vortex pinning and thermal conductivity. However, the self-organization of nucleation and growth is constrained by the growth geometric symmetry. To realize highly controlled three-dimensional nanostructures by self-organization, nanostructure formation that breaks the growth geometric symmetry thermodynamically and kinetically, such as tilted or in-plane aligned nanostructures, is a challenging issue. A vertically aligned nano-checkerboard is typically formed from ZnMnGaO4 with the twin domain vertically aligned by the stress from the MgO substrate. The change in the template structure is promising to form a different type of nanostructure. The cubic ZnMnGaO4/MgO films were annealed to form nanoscale tetragonal domains in the tilted direction from the surface, which is determined by lattice mismatch, lattice symmetry, and atomic bonding. On the other hand, as a result of free deformation, in-plane aligned twin domains were formed on the SrTiO3 substrate with a thin MgO buffer layer, which does not induce stress in the ZnMnGaO4 film. By annealing the ZnMnGaO4/MgO/SrTiO3 film, the nano-checkerboard with a size of ∼10 nm and a length of ∼200 nm is elongated to the in-plane [100] or [001] direction. This study demonstrates the possibility of fabricating a nanostructure that breaks the growth geometric symmetry, which is not achieved by the previous self-organization.     画像生成AIは,ユーザが入力したプロンプト(語集合やテキスト)に対して,関連する画像を自動生成するものであるが,プロンプトの作成に関する指針・アルゴリズムが無く,そのため,適切なプロンプトを与えることが困難であり,意図した生成画像を獲得することが難しいという問題がある.本研究では,俳句・短歌などの短文テキストが,どの程度,事物や事象を具体的・視覚的に表現しているかを検証するため,短文テキストの絵画性(painterly)分析を行った.次に,画像生成AI(Midjourney)を用いて,俳句・短歌などの短文テキストからの画像自動生成を行い,生成画像の品質分析を行った.画像自動生成は,与えられた短文テキストのみを用いた場合と,与えられた短文テキストに関連するテキストを追加した場合で実験を行った.conference pape

    Observer-Structured Controller Design Using Practical Data

    This note addresses the conversion problem of a priori designed unstructured controllers to observer-structured controllers. Observer-structured controllers have been proposed as a structural extension of Luenberger observer-based controllers to accommodate linear parametric plant systems with unspecified nominal state-space matrices, and the usefulness has been demonstrated in the literature. However, the conversion process in the literature uses only the mathematical models of the plant systems and the a priori designed unstructured controllers, which might degrade the plant state estimation performance of the converted observer-structured controllers due to the possibility of unexpected disturbances, unmodeled dynamics, etc. of the practical operating environment. Therefore, a conversion method which well reflects the practical operating environment has been desired. To this end, this note proposes a conversion method, which is based on the least square method, by using the data of the plant systems controlled by the a priori designed unstructured controllers under practical operating environment, and illustrates the effectiveness of our method.journal articl

    Daily Variations of Inter-Hemispheric Field-Aligned Currents During Severe Geomagnetic Storms Using Equatorial Magnetic Field Measurements from Davao Station, Philippines

    An examination of geomagnetic data collected in Davo, Philippines, over a 20-year period encompassing solar cycles 23 and 24 resulted in the identification of attributes linked to the Inter-Hemispheric Field-Aligned Currents (IHFACs). The study focused on the analysis of the normalized D component of geomagnetic field (ΔD). Specifically, characteristics were investigated in the dawn, noon, and dusk sectors, revealing the identification of both long-term features across solar cycle 23 and 24. During the declining phases of solar cycles, peak-to-peak amplitudes of ΔD in the dusk sector show enhancements, indicating increased sensitivity to geomagnetic variations as solar activity wanes. The variation of ΔD during storm periods was studied and compared to quiet time ΔD variations to identify the changes in IHFACs during high-intensity geomagnetic storms. During the main phase of severe geomagnetic storms, significant enhancements in the negative component of ΔD occur around local noon, while at night, the positive component of ΔD shows marked increases. During the recovery phase, the positive component's daily amplitude gradually decreases over several days, indicating a slow return to quieter geomagnetic conditions, whereas the negative component remains relatively stable compared to quiet periods. It is evident that the response of IHFACs to solar disturbances significantly depends on the phase of the geomagnetic storm and the time of day.journal articl

    Fall Anxiety: Quantum State Probability as a Key Feature in Parkinson’s Risk Prediction

    Fear of falling remains a significant concern among individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Elevated scores on the Fall Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) are associated with recurrent falls and anxiety that limits daily activities, ultimately increasing fall risk. While machine learning presents opportunities for fall risk prediction, the integration of psychological indicators and advanced feature engineering techniques, particularly for gait data, has not been thoroughly investigated. This study proposes quantum state probability values as novel features to predict fear of falling. Utilizing a motion capture dataset from the Federal University of ABC, Brazil, the model incorporates demographic data, L-Dopa dosage, and gait features. Among four dataset configurations, the model using only quantum state probability features achieved 93% accuracy with an SVM-RBF classifier. High Cohen’s Kappa and MCC values confirmed the strong predictive alignment with true labels. Visualization using PCA and t-SNE demonstrated less overlapping class separation in quantum state probability as feature.journal articl
