Consultation Reflections

I wrote this paper for an essay assignment in Human Origins and Prehistory, taught by  
Dr. John Soderberg. This paper was prompted to compare and contrast the viewpoints of  
anthropologists Sarah Blaffer Hrdy and Richard Wrangham, and to understand why their theories  
on Homo erectus are so different despite both anthropologists using similar evidence. Before  
coming to Denison, I was confident in my ability to write essays but was somewhat uncertain of  
how to translate my work into writing effective academic scholarship. I appreciate my assigned  
editor for taking the time to thoroughly read and consider my work and ways to improve it. This  
writing process included working on section transitions and breaking up my structure into  
smaller parts. I believe it has improved my work. My consultant helped me to see my paper as  
more of a cohesive whole than it had been before. This writing process was enjoyable, and I look  
forward to further improving my writing during my time at Denison.

Eva and I began each of our consultations together by creating an outline for our meeting 
to prioritize what we needed to work on. At first, we focused on restructuring her paper into a 
more logical form. After reorganizing it, we created transition phrases to better suit the new 
outline of Eva’s paper. My favorite part of the consultation was prior to giving my insight, I 
would ask Eva for her own and they were usually closely aligned. However, we experienced 
difficulty with the deletion of some points that may have been irrelevant without Eva’s 
professors’ given prompt. Giving Eva the power to choose how she wanted the consultation to go 
and what to prioritize closely aligns with the Writing Center's values of creating and enhancing

Consultation Reflections

Despite the amount of time I spent initially reworking and rewriting to produce a final 
draft of my piece, the process of revising my work for publishing with the writing center 
revealed that there were still small adjustments I could make to strengthen my essay further. 
Through this process I realized the value of having a third party do a comprehensive assessment 
of your essay, especially for a paper on a specialized topic that needs to do the work of informing 
the reader on things they may otherwise be ignorant of. Notes from a third party are incredibly 
beneficial when you’re concerned with the clarity of your argument, and Mary Hodgkins helped 
me identify exactly where I needed more clarification. For example, we revised some of my 
topic sentences so that each paragraph transitioned gracefully from the previous paragraph, 
strengthening the overall structure of my paper. This process really highlighted how great of a 
resource the writing center is and cemented my commitment to continue using this resource in 
the future.

Coming into this consultation, I was impressed with the writer’s work and excited to 
discuss the essay. We mostly focused on mechanics and organizational improvements, and spent 
a lot of our conversation talking about how to further strengthen the great ideas that were already 
on the page. This paper was tackling a hefty topic and did so incredibly eloquently, and we 
looked at ways to help keep the reader attentive to the larger argument throughout all ten pages. 
We looked closely at the introduction and thesis and clarified the central claim at work. We then 
divided the paper into sections and added subheadings, and tweaked some topic sentences to help 
with transitions of ideas. I loved working with Hayley, and my favorite moments of the 
consultation were when she was able to pick up on what I was about to say, and make the edit 
herself before I could finish my sentence. It’s indicative of what we want to accomplish at the 
Writing Center– giving writers the tools they need to be successful writers independently.

The Rat King
Moose Hogeland
They look upon their subjects, a sea
Of tangled creatures dancing in forced synchronicity.
This royal ball will be de ned by
The multitude of memories left behind.
As evening cycles from night then to
day, they falter in their vital movement,
Their aching feet ready to rest from the eternal merriment.
Too tired to keep dancing and moving, they take
Their leave and stumble to rest,  nally arriving to
Their private chamber, picturesque in their disheveled mess.
The rotting sewers, a court of high renown, the
Home of vermin, a royal army of rats and roaches.
A roiling ball of bodies writhing in pain, unable to
Get free, unable to rest, they dance to survive.
The Rat King, foregoing the comforts of
Sleep, drink, and food for the eternal dance,
Until they never dance again, picturesque in their deathbed.
They look upon their desiccated subjects, a tangled
Mess of tails, blood, and fur. They
Delegate, document, and dissect the
creatures. The court is dismantled, untangled and
Cleaned. The grotesque, knotted tails are
Preserved in time to
Remind those who come long after
Of the royal ball of the rat king.

ilynchee
Under the ochre sky,
I creeped through deserted landscapes
that are left behind,
tread by tread
jam-packed
with pointed pieces of metal.
Clanking, a sound,
should have roused
human beings
from their enduring nap,
but none to be found.
The scent of lubricant
hangs in the greasy air,
a type of fragrance
that I would never get to smell
but keeps on  owing in my veins.
I lean forward, gasping for a blast of dust
that carries along the  aming feathers,
whose iron-like odor
of blood and gore
recalls a moaning extinction.
I was alone but surrounded
by the horns of ferrous utility pole
falling apart
as it gets devoured
by swarms of oxygen.
I was alone but overwhelmed
by the huge balls of  re
raining down this way and that,
like the grieving tears
for the eternal loss

of another towering sentinel.
How ironic is
the Voyager Golden Record,
a human's e ort,
a time capsule,
on which they carved
the intelligent brain of theirs,
while the aftermath was imprinted
nowhere else, but
on each grain of contaminated sand.
At the emptiness of night-time
carved by the remaining whine
of cockroaches,
"a worker bee"
beavers away, by himself,
packaging trash into giant skyscrapers,
one cube
at a time,
cleaning up traces
of the intelligent brain.

Languish along that river all for tragedy-
glimmering, golden, gilded
Beautiful as Gatsby dead in the pool, Lord,
What a tragedy it is to blush,
to giggle as your blood becomes
Beautiful to those who once would dress your wounds, who now snort
tragedy like cocaine
Till nothing but su ering is beautiful,
till your sweat is crystal,
till your tears are valuable,
till tragedy is your lover and far more
Beautiful than a white picket fence,
a rose garden,
a dog,
a life.
