Shetland Sea Word Glossary
A glossary of words belonging to the Shetland sea language. In this context, sea language is a variety of ritual or euphemistic vocabulary used by fishers to circumvent the usual names for certain ‘unlucky’ items at sea. In Shetland, many of the older coinages derive from Norn, a Scandinavian language spoken in the isles until the eighteenth century. Defining Altruism
This Excel spreadsheet contains the raw data used for a structured review of the precise definitions of altruism in full-length books in English with the word ‘altruism’, ‘altruist’, or ‘altruistic’ in the title or subtitle, available from WorldCat as of June 2, 2024, that were written by an author with a terminal academic degree who held an academic position. Excluded were books about biological altruism, self-published books, biographies, books in which psychological altruism was not a primary subject (such as books about organ donation or neurobiology), and book-length compilations of works by many authors with different viewpoints (such as edited books, encyclopaedias, compendiums, and symposium and conference proceedings or transactions). Theses that were published were included, on the premise that the successful doctoral student was supervised by a qualified academic supervisor in an academic setting. The combination of synaptic structural stability and functional plasticity is a recognized feature of the nervous system. This dichotomy is possible because the processes involved in neuronal information processing, such as receiving and transducing stimuli and generating synaptic responses, are predominantly biochemical. Here, we reveal a presynaptic response to neuronal activity that is physical in nature. We show that dynamic filopodia emerge and transiently deform synaptic boutons to enhance connectivity during action potential discharge. Filopodia extension increases presynaptic membrane tension, which is crucial for preserving synchronous neurotransmitter release during repeated synaptic vesicle fusion. However, during excessive action potential discharge, this mechanism becomes maladaptive, contributing to epileptogenesis. Therefore, we provide the first direct evidence that mechanical forces determine the extent and timescale of synaptic signals
A link between the size and composition of comets
This dataset contains the supplementary data for the manuscript "A link between the size and composition of comets" by Robinson et al. 2024, published in MNRAS. In this work we collated literature measurements of comet composition and the size of the cometary nucleus, in order to search for possible correlations between these parameters. In this dataset we provide a table of all the composition and size measurements used in this work.README.txt - contains a description of data headers in the data file "df_comp_all.csv".

There are three main datasets i.e A) House_Hold_PAIRS, B) HOUSE_HOLD_PAIRS_SHARED_MDR, C) E_COLI_MDR_SHARED, We also have a list of paired farmer and pig(HOUSE_HOLD_PAIRS), the multi-drug resistant(MDR) strains they share (HOUSE_HOLD_PAIRS_MDR_SHARED), and the MDR patterns carried by E.coli recovered from the paired farmer and pig(E_COLI_MDR_SHARED). Farmer-pig_carriage this dataset compares the gene carriage of a farmer at time T and thier pig at time T+1 in the same household.

Videos from the model construction and the tests in February 2020
Construction and testing of the second phase of the project. A scale model of a 2m x 2m groin vault made of 3D printed and mortar filled plastic blocks was tested at the EQUALS laboratory in Bristol (February 2020). Videos included from significant tests showing collapse. Tests vary according to confinment (largely configuration 2) and excitation. In this study, we investigate the dynamics of self-organised suspensions formed by rod-like fd virus colloids. Two methods have been employed for analysing fluorescence microscopy movies: single particle tracking (SPT) in direct space and differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) in reciprocal space. We perform a quantitative analysis on this anisotropic system with complex diffusion across different self-assembled states, ranging from dilute and semi-dilute liquids to nematic and smectic organisations. By leveraging the complementary strengths of SPT and DDM, we provide new insights in the dynamics of viral colloidal rods, such as long time diffusion coefficients in the smectic phase. We further discuss the advantages and limitations of both methods for studying the intricate dynamics of anisotropic colloidal systems

These are the source data underlying the figures presented in a manuscript entitled "The NE/AAT/CBG axis regulates adipose tissue glucocorticoid exposure", which has been provisionally accepted for publication in Nature Communications. Once published, the metadata for this dataset will be updated with the DOI of the published paper. Corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG; SERPINA6) binds >85% of circulating glucocorticoids but its influence on their metabolic actions is unproven. Targeted proteolytic cleavage of CBG by neutrophil elastase (NE; ELANE) significantly reduces CBG binding affinity, potentially increasing ‘free’ glucocorticoid levels at sites of inflammation. NE is inhibited by alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT; SERPINA1). Using complementary approaches in mice and humans to manipulate NE or AAT, we show high-fat diet (HFD) increases the NE:AAT ratio specifically in murine visceral adipose tissue, an effect only observed in males. Notably, HFD-fed male mice lacking NE have reduced glucocorticoid levels and action specifically in visceral adipose tissue, with improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, independent of systemic changes in free glucocorticoids. The protective effect of NE deficiency is lost when the adrenals are removed. Moreover, human asymptomatic heterozygous carriers of deleterious mutations in SERPINA1 resulting in lower AAT levels have increased adipose tissue glucocorticoid levels and action. However, in contrast to mice, humans present with systemic increases in free circulating glucocorticoid levels, an effect independent of HPA axis activation. These findings show that NE and AAT regulate local tissue glucocorticoid bioavailability in vivo, providing crucial evidence of a mechanism linking inflammation and metabolism
