No full textThe biodiversity crisis is impacting Europe’s largest biotope: arable land. But most of the ecological research on biodiversity focuses on habitats outside of arable systems. The segetal flora - wild plants growing in crop fields - is among the most threatened plant groups in Europe due to agricultural intensification. Over one-third of these species are endangered. Organic farming promotes arable plant biodiversity due to the absence of herbicides or synthetic fertiliser. This study evaluates the status of the segetal flora in the Berchtesgadener Land (BGL) Biosphere Region through vegetation mapping and investigates factors influencing the diversity of arable plants. Using the methodology of Meyer et al. (2024) - who mapped arable plant diversity along two field margins and one full diagonal through the field interior across 150 fields organically managed in Bavaria, but missing the Prealps and the BGL - this research aims to fill that knowledge gap. Additionally, it compares data from the BGL region with findings from the rest of Bavaria. Field surveys were conducted on 42 organic cereal fields in the northern part of the BGL region. Of the 167 recorded taxa, 82 species belong to Bavaria’s segetal flora. Results indicate significantly higher diversity of the segetal flora along field margins compared to field interiors. Species richness across entire fields was significantly influenced by crop coverage only. Several factors had a significant effect on species composition, particularly the time since conversion to organic farming. In collaboration with local farmers, the Biosphere Region’s administration office initiated successfully a seeding project to reintroduce and establish rare arable plants in the region. PLOS ONE / Non-guided, Mobile, CBT-I-based Sleep Training in War-torn Ukraine: A Feasibility Study
No full textAbstract Background War conditions can severely impact sleep and mental health at the populationlevel, especially in the conflicts of such tremendous scale as in Ukraine. The aimof this research was to study whether a mobile, unguided Cognitive BehavioralTherapy-based Intervention for sleep problems, Sleep2, is feasible, acceptable, andpotentially able to reduce mental health/sleep problems symptoms.MethodsA single-arm, open-label, uncontrolled pre-post evaluation study was conductedwith 487 registered participants: 283 started, 160 (56.55%) finished, out of which 95completed without an ambulatory heart rate (HR) sensor and 65 with. Assessmentswere conducted through online questionnaires and objective measurements via HRsensors. Besides feasibility and acceptability, outcome measures included symptomsin several mental health domains alongside self-reported and objectively reportedsleep parameter.ResultsEngagement with the Sleep2 app was high, achieving an 80.72% compliance rate,alongside high levels of feasibility and acceptance. Participants reported significantpre-post reductions in the severity of symptoms, with sleep problems decreasing by22.60% (Cohen’s d = 0.53), insomnia by 35.08% (d = 0.69), fear of sleep by 32.43%(d = 0.25), anxiety by 27.72% (d = 0.48), depression by 28.67% (d = 0.52), PTSD by32.41% (d = 0.51), somatic symptoms by 24.52% (d = 0.51), and perceived stress byPLOS One | https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0310070 May 27, 2025 2 / 1617.90% (d = 0.39). Objective sleep measurements showed a significant reduction insleep onset latency only.ConclusionThe ‘Sleep2Ukraine’ program demonstrated high feasibility and acceptance, with sig-nificant improvements in subjective sleep and mental health measures among partic-ipants. However, given the study’s uncontrolled design and reliance on self-selectedparticipants, these findings should be considered preliminary. Randomized controlledtrials are needed to establish efficacy. Nonetheless, the results highlight the potentialof culturally adapted, scalable, mobile-based CBT-I interventions to address sleepand mental health needs in war-affected populations
Zwischen Tradition und Moderne: die kroatisch-katholische Pfarrgemeinde des seligen Kardinals Aloisius Stepinac in Salzburg als religiöser und kultureller Anker in einem säkularen Österreich
No full textDie vorliegende Masterarbeit untersucht die kroatisch-katholische Pfarrgemeinde in Salzburg, die trotz eines säkularen Umfelds eine hohe Vitalität aufweist. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, inwiefern diese Gemeinde im Rahmen der Säkularisierungstheorie interpretiert werden kann. Die Säkularisierungstheorie postuliert, dass die Bedeutung der Religion infolge der Modernisierungsprozesse zunehmend schwindet. Ihre Vertreter*innen verweisen insbesondere auf den Rückgang der Mitgliederzahlen in religiösen Gemeinschaften und die steigende Zahl konfessionsloser Personen, ein Trend, der sich in vielen europäischen Ländern deutlich abzeichnet. Im Gegensatz zu dieser Entwicklung verzeichnet die kroatisch-katholische Pfarrgemeinde in Salzburg jedoch jährlich einen Mitgliederzuwachs, sodass sie nicht in die gängige Deutung der Säkularisierungstheorie passt.
