    Job characteristics and work adjustment among Iranian nurses: A correlational study

    Background: Job characteristics (JCs) are an important factor in successful task performance and successful work adjustment (WA). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between JCs and WA among Iranian nurses. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was carried out in 2018 on 190 nurses randomly recruited from Shahid Beheshti University Hospital, Kashan, Iran. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the JCs Questionnaire, and the WA Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed through the independent-samples t-test, the one-way analysis of variance, the Pearson correlation analysis, and the linear regression analysis. Results: The total mean scores of JCs and WA were, respectively, 70.43 ± 45.07 and 3.23 ± 0.43. JCs had significant but weak correlation with WA (r = 0.29; P = 0.001). JCs, age, and employment status were identified as predictors of WA (r2 = 0.076; P = 0.001). Conclusion: Nursing managers can promote nurses' WA by paying greater attention to their perception of their JCs and promoting their professional autonomy

    Trend of mortality rate due to drowning in Iran during 2013-2018

    Background and Objectives: According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths worldwide, accounting for 360,000 annual deaths and 7 of all injury-related deaths. Low- and middle-income countries are the most affected, accounting for 90 of unintentional drowning deaths. This study aimed to calculate the rate of drowning mortality rate and to investigate its trend in Iran. Materials and Methods: Information on death due to drowning in Iran was extracted from Iranian Legal Medicine Organization. The crude mortality rate was calculated each year according to gender and province of the country. To examine the trend for different years, joinpoint regression was used. Results: From 2013 to 2018, a total of 5853 persons suffered from fatal drowning in Iran. The crude mortality rate in men was significantly higher than in women. The drowning mortality rate has decreased during the study period in both genders. The annual percent change in mortality rate was 3.2. Conclusions: Although the death rate from drowning has declined in the country, targeted scale-up of known effective interventions such as swimmers supervision and basic survival skills are still needed for reducing mortality due to drowning, particularly in provinces with high mortality rates

    The impact of prehospital emergency services on the outcome of trauma patients

    Background and Objectives: Trauma is one of the most important health problems in the world, and shock index is a good tool for evaluating trauma patients in emergency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of prehospital emergency on the outcome of trauma patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the records of 359 patients referred to the emergency department; they were selected non-randomly. Demographic information, trauma mechanism, patients' transportation, location and duration of hospitalization and the final outcomes of the patients were evaluated. the predictive power of the shock index in hospitalization and mortality was studied. The data were analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: The results of study showed that 73.3 of patients were male and 26.7 were female with a median of 30 years. Car and motorcycle accidents and falling from altitude were the most common mechanisms of trauma and cause of death. Time interval between trauma and emergency shock index and patient status was normal and significant ( P Conclusion: The rate of patients who were transferred by EMS is equal with those transferred by witness. Patients who had normal shock index with delay transfer time had a significantly high mortality rate

    Comparative efficacy of hospital disinfectants against nosocomial infection pathogens

    Background: Due to the increasing rate of hospital-acquired infections, it is essential to select appropriate disinfectant agents. In this study, the efficacy of hospital disinfectants against nosocomial infection pathogens was compared. Methods: High level disinfectants (Steranios 2, Deconex HLDPA, and Microzed Quatenol) were tested for their antibacterial effects by determining their minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and Burkholderia cepacia ATCC 10673. Results: E. faecalis, as gram-positive bacterium, was more susceptible to high level disinfectants compared to gram-negative B.cepacia. The MIC = MBC values of 2 Steranios, Deconex HLDPA and Microzed Quatenol against E. faecalis and B.cepacia were 0.31, 9.77, 2.2 mg/L and 9.8, 78.13, 70.31 mg/L, respectively. Conclusions: According to the findings of this study, the most effective disinfectants against both E. faecalis and B.cepacia were Steranios 2, Microzed Quatenol, and Deconex HLDPA in order. Considering the importance of these bacterial strains in healthcare-associated infections, the use of these effective disinfectants is recommended in the hospitals. © 2020 The Author(s)

    TGF-β in radiotherapy: Mechanisms of tumor resistance and normal tissues injury

    Emerging evidences show that changes in tumor stroma can adapt cancer cells to radiotherapy, thereby leading to a reduction in tumor response to treatment. On the other hand, radiotherapy is associated with severe reactions in normal tissues which limit the amount radiation dose received by tumor. These challenges open a window in radiobiology and radiation oncology to explore mechanisms for improving tumor response and also alleviate side effects of radiotherapy. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a well-known and multitasking cytokine that regulates a wide range of reactions and interactions within tumor and normal tissues. Within tumor microenvironment (TME), TGF-β is the most potent suppressor of immune system activity against cancer cells. This effect is mediated through stimulation of CD4+ which differentiates to T regulatory cells (Tregs), infiltration of fibroblasts and differentiation into cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs), and also polarization of macrophages to M2 cells. These changes lead to suppression of cytotoxic CD8 + T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells to kill cancer cells. TGF-β also plays a key role in the angiogenesis, invasion and DNA damage responses (DDR) in cancer cells. In normal tissues, TGF-β triggers the expression of a wide range of pro-oxidant and pro-fibrosis genes, leading to fibrosis, genomic instability and some other side effects. These properties of TGF-β make it a potential target to preserve normal tissues and sensitize tumor via its inhibition. In the current review, we aim to explain the mechanisms of upregulation of TGF-β and its consequences in both tumor and normal tissues. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

    Developing a national minimum data set for hospital information systems in the Islamic Republic of Iran Mise au point d’un ensemble de données minimum au niveau national pour les systèmes d’information hospitaliers en République Islamique d’Iran

    Background: Standardized data collection supports disease information management and leads to better quality of care. The Islamic Republic of Iran lacks a standard data set for data collection in hospitals. Aims: The aim of this study was to design a minimum data set for hospital information systems in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Methods: This study was conducted in 2015. Data sets of other countries, hospital records, hospital information systems and electronic health record systems in the Islamic Republic of Iran were reviewed for data elements for the minimum data set. Data elements were collected using a data extraction form and were categorized into similar classes, which were divided into administrative and clinical sections. The list of data elements was reviewed by experts in technical offices of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, and a minimum data set was drawn up. Results: There were nine and 18 data classes in the administrative and clinical sections with a total of 166 and 684 data elements respectively. After review by the expert panel, 159 administrative and 621 clinical data elements were retained as the minimum data set for the Iranian hospital information system. Conclusion: Our dataset can be used by the Iranian health ministry, hospital information system companies and health surveillance centres for more efficient management of health data. © World Health Organization (WHO) 2020

    Retinoic acid and 17β-estradiol improve male germ cell differentiation from mouse-induced pluripotent stem cells

    This research aimed to explore the impacts of retinoic acid (RA)/17β-estradiol (E) induction and embryoid body formation to enhance differentiation of mouse-induced pluripotent stem cells (miPSCs) into male germ cells in vitro. Flow cytometry and qPCR were conducted to describe miPSCs differentiation process. Various temporal expression profiles of germ cell-related genes were traced. Stra8 gene expression increased in the RA group on the 4th day compared to other groups. The RA group experienced a more significant increase than E group. The expression of Sycp3 increased in RA + E group on 4th day compared with other groups. Expression of AKAP3 enhanced in the RA + E group than other groups on day 4. Moreover, miPSCs showed that this gene expression in the RA + E group was increased in comparison to RA and E groups on day 7. AKAP3 gene expression on day 7 of miPSCs decreased in RA and E groups. Flow cytometry data indicated that 3–8 of the cells in sub-G1 stage were haploid after RA and E induction compared to other groups on day 4. This study showed that miPSCs possess the power for differentiating into male germ cells in vitro via formation of embryoid body by RA with/or E induction. © 2019 Blackwell Verlag Gmb

    The association between serum levels of growth differentiation factor-15 and rheumatoid arthritis activity

    Background: Macrophages play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) acts as an autocrine regulator of macrophage activation. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess serum level of GDF-15 as a potential biomarker for detecting RA activity. Method: A total of 100 female RA patients and 55 age and weight matched healthy control females were enroled. The serum level of GDF-15 was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Serum levels of GDF-15 in RA patients with high, moderate, low and no disease activity were 989.0 ± 161.9, 505.6 ± 220.5, 349.2 ± 155.9 and 349.0 ± 144.0 pg/mL, respectively. GDF-15 with a cut-off value higher than 705 pg/mL was indicative of high RA activity with sensitivity of 96 and specificity of 92. Conclusion: GDF-15 serum levels may be used as a biomarker to predict high RA disease activity. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Lt

    Circular RNA and diabetes: Epigenetic regulator with diagnostic role

    Circular RNAs, a group of endogenous non-coding RNAs, are characterized by covalently closed cyclic structures with no poly-adenylated tails. It has been recently recommended that cirRNAs have an essential role in regulating genes expression by functioning as a translational regulator, RNA binding protein sponge and microRNA sponge. Due to their close relation to the progression of various diseases such as diabetes, circRNAs have become a research hotspot. A number of circRNAs (i.e., circRNA0054633, circHIPK3, circANKRD36, and circRNA11783-2) have been shown to be associated with initiation and progression of diabetes. Based on reports, in a tissue, some circRNAs are expressed in a developmental stage-specific manner. In this study, we reviewed research on circular RNAs involved in the pathogenesis and diagnosis of diabetes and their prognostic roles. © 2020 Bentham Science Publishers

    The effects of group reality therapy on general health among nursing and midwifery students

    Background: Nursing and midwifery students experience high levels of stress, particularly during their clinical education. High levels of stress negatively affect general health. Reality therapy (RT) is a method with potential effects on stress. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of group RT on general health among nursing and midwifery students. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Autumn 2015 using a pretest-posttest design. Forty-six students were randomly allocated to an intervention (n = 23) and a control (n = 23) group. Participants in the intervention group received group RT in eight weekly sessions. The General Health Questionnaire was used for general health assessment both before and 1 month after the study intervention. The paired and the independent samples t-test and the Chi-square test were used for the data analysis. Results: There was no significant difference between the intervention and the control groups respecting the pretest mean score of general health (33.05 ± 14.91 vs. 30.34 ± 14.32; P = 0.528). However, the posttest mean score of general health in the intervention group was statistically significantly less than the control group (19.08 ± 10.27 vs. 29.39 ± 12.38; P = 0.004). Conclusion: Group RT can significantly improve general health among nursing and midwifery students
