The Integral Embrace of Stanislav Grof\u27s Holotropic Paradigm

    No full text
Though best known as a foundational expression of the field of transpersonal psychology, Grof\u27s holotropic paradigm is also an original and vital expression of integral theory and practice. Integral perspectives can be discerned through the degree to which they manifest the following five principles or qualities: evolutionary, planetary, transdisciplinary, enchanted, and engaged. This presentation will demonstrate the integral embrace of the holotropic paradigm through consideration of these five principles in Grof\u27s life-work

Grof and Whitehead: Visions of a Postmodern Cosmology

    No full text
Due to the materialist bias lurking behind most modern scientific thought, spiritual experience has been marginalized and generally left out of any scientific cosmological speculation. Stanislav Grof’s work with extraordinary modes of experience provides a detailed cartography of these transpersonal realms and challenges the notion that our understanding of reality can be adequate without their inclusion. The speculative philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead provides a metaphysical basis for just such a enspirited cosmology, one that is also congruent with quantum and relativistic physics and most scientific findings, if not their materialistic justifications. Grof’s transpersonal phenomenology, on the other hand, offers enriching possibilities of spiritual experience to flesh out Whitehead’s cosmological scheme

Exploring the Boundaries of Death and Rebirth in LSD Psychotherapy

    No full text
The experience of dying and being reborn is one of the central dynamics of deep psychedelic work. This presentation explores 3 basic questions about this dynamic: (1) Why does death become as large as it sometimes does in psychedelic therapy? (2) Why does death repeat itself so many times? And (3) What is actually dying and being reborn in advanced sessions

Transcendent Sex and the Prenatal Experience: Acting out the Scripts in Love

    No full text
Prenatal events and the phenomena of the Birth-Perinatal Matrices identified by Grof are often re-enacted and re-accessed inadvertently during sex, propelling people into altered states similar to those he identified in his psychedelic and holotropic breath work research. Other prenatal research identifies how some prenatal complexes predispose people to altered-state sex, certain kinds of experiences, and certain kinds of love relationships

    Psychology for a Holotropic Metaphysic

    No full text
Stanislav Grof’s Holotropic theory complements Alfred North Whitehead’s great design, characterized by Abner Shimony, to integrate physics into a generalized psychology. Shimony’s estimation of Whitehead’s design suggests an inversion of the idea that the deliverances of relativistic and quantum physics support Grof’s Holotropic psychology. Rather, Grof’s discoveries open avenues to understanding experientially “the complex energy, emotional and purposeful (that Whitehead characterizes),” inherent in the becoming of the fundamental actualities of existence, from which the physics characterizations of energy, time, and space are but abstractions. What is more, Shimony suggests that Whitehead offers a means to integrate the mind into a scientific picture of the world, contrary to most Cartesian-Newtonian views. Grof’s characterization of psychedelic effect as “an unspecific amplifier of mental processes” addresses Shimony’s suggestion exactly and provides an important preface to creativity toward a change in consciousness requisite for evolutionary progress
