African-Centered Transpersonal Self in Diaspora and Psychospiritual Wellness: A Sankofa Perspective
Get PDFThe West African concepts of àse and sankofa have distinctive transpersonal value that should be explored in greater depth by the transpersonal field, particularly for their relational and participatory aspects. Transpersonal psychology is a Western psychology with philosophical roots in transcendentalism and perennialist traditions that may include theism and non-dualism. Officially established in 1968, transpersonal psychology has gone through a number of shifts, including the participatory turn in the early 2000s. The Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi), also founded in 1968, has built a substantial body of research on a variety of African epistemology, cosmology, and philosophy to create the field of African-centered psychology. The transpersonal West African concepts discussed here may serve as a bridge to begin greater dialogue between the fields of Black psychology and transpersonal psychology

No full textThe emergence of language and the capacity for storytelling can be considered fundamental to our becoming human. Our brain seeks meaningful patterns - the story - in everything we see, hear or sense. Storytelling favors survival by activating a powerful inner world of association and meaning, enabling us to more successfully navigate the world, empathize with others, and develop abstract ideas. Similarly, the visual arts express and reflect back to ourselves our connection to nature and the cosmos in symbolic form. Thinkers since the time of Plato and Aristotle have described traits common to these forms of expression as archetypes: characters, images and scenarios that recur over time, patterns and structures that are fundamental in nature. Jung and Campbell are renowned for their insights into this rich realm of the psyche. What does all this evidence reveal about the deeper nature of consciousness? This talk will offer some interpretations, as well as explore broader aspects of storytelling and art throughout human history
Planetary Consciousness and Humanity\u27s Destiny
No full textHumanity is at a pivotal stage in our evolution: Homo Sapiens Sapiens has been on Earth for some 100,000 years, some millions of years if we count our ancestor species. These are mere time flickers in an Earth and its life stretching to billions of years. The last years have seen an unprecedented development of technological and scientific advancements, an awareness of human rights, a globalization of economic systems and an awareness of the Earth as our common home. Along with these, we witness major ecological challenges, famines and poverty, extinction of countless species, societal strife, a breakdown of human values, increasing frequency of wars, and even the threat of nuclear annihilation. It is time to realize we are at crossroads and as planetary citizens make our choices: Either we move forward with the awareness of the sacredness of all life, the brotherhood/sisterhood for all humans on Earth, a higher spiritual purpose; or go down the path of more of the same, the relentless rise of the ego, the source of all evils, until perhaps we annihilate ourselves. From the point of view of the Conscious Universe, the freedom to choose is ours. If we realize the unity of all life, under an undivided Awareness, we will fulfill our planetary and galactic destiny.
