Spirituality and Hallucinogen Use: Results from a Pilot Study among College Students

    Get PDF
Anthropologists have studied the use of hallucinogens as a spiritual tool by indigenous populations since the turn of the 20th century. However, literature is sparse in describing use by non-indigenous populations. Using a study population of students from a university in the Southwest United States, the current study investigated the spiritual development and meaning that college students place on their use of hallucinogenic substances. The spiritual framework developed by Love and Talbot (1999) and a transpersonal anthropological approach were used to guide the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant. Results indicated that participants used hallucinogens for both spiritual and recreational purposes with hallucinogen use playing an important role in their continued exploration of spirituality, which was an integral part of their lives. This pilot study could serve as a primer for future research on the role of hallucinogen use in the spiritual experiences of contemporary U.S. college students, and other non-indigenous Western populations

Integral dreaming : a holistic approach to dreams

    No full text
A holistic approach to the fascinating, multifaceted world of dreams. This innovative book offers a holistic approach to one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of human experience: dreaming. Advocating the broad-ranging vision termed “integral” by thinkers from Aurobindo to Wilber, Fariba Bogzaran and Daniel Deslauriers consider dreams as multifaceted phenomena in an exploration that includes scientific, phenomenological, sociocultural, and subjective knowledge. Drawing from historical, cross-cultural, and contemporary practices, both interpretive and noninterpretive, the authors present Integral Dream Practice, an approach that emphasizes the dreamer’s creative participation, reflective capacities, and mindful awareness in working with dreams. Bogzaran and Deslauriers have developed this comprehensive way of approaching dreams over many years and highlight their methods in a chapter that unfolds a single dream, showing how sustained creative exploration over time leads to transformative change.https://digitalcommons.ciis.edu/facultypublications/1000/thumbnail.jp

    Mental Health and the Paranormal

To date, there has been a dearth of work examining the relationships between paranormal experiences and mental health. After defining paranormal experience and its prevalence, I examine a number of areas related to paranormal experience and psychopathology: psi and the unconscious, dissociation and fantasy proneness, schizotypy, transliminality and reality monitoring, child abuse, reasoning and information processing, and transpersonal psychology. Finally, I discuss the clinical implications of these findings

    Integral Ecology Panel

    No full text
Integral Ecology panel The gravity and complexity of the global ecological crisis calls for integral approaches to ecology. Such approaches are concerned with the transformation of human conceptual, psychological, and cultural patterns that have become an imminent danger to the health of the entire Earth community, as well as with the cultivation of new structures of human experience and action that are more harmoniously aligned with the natural world and the larger cosmic order within which we dwell. Speakers on this panel will explore some of the history and implications of the emergence of more integral ecologies

    Integral Ecofeminism

    No full text
Integral Ecofeminism The integral ecofeminist worldview expressed in this presentation recognizes the ever growing, ever expanding, ever changing nature of things as existing beyond our limited ability to perceive and/or explain the world we know. It calls us to a journey, to the realm of spirit for initiation. It is a prayer for helping us to understand that which we oftentimes cannot describe nor explain adequately though the vehicle of language. Rather than be limited to our words, integral ecofeminism asks that at times we be willing to communicate through our hearts; for the love that is generated from within that crucible has the power to embrace and nurture the rising tension of the entire planet. Further, are called to “spirate” language, to borrow Mary Daly’s term, breathing the life of the Muse into the creation of reality. This presentation offers an introduction to integral ecofeminism as a spiritual and philosophical pathway for the realization of a global community while providing the tools by which the container for global metamorphosis is created
