Influences of Sex, Morph, and Weather on Roosting Distributions in Overwintering White-throated Sparrows (_Zonotrichia albicollis_)
Habitat choice influences survival by affecting access to resources, shelter from predators, mating opportunities, and numerous other costs and benefits. As such, habitat conservation is crucial, especially for migratory songbirds which are declining primarily due to habitat destruction. White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) are a well-studied migratory songbird, but little is known about their roosting behaviors or how those behaviors are affected by sex, color morph, or weather. To determine this, we tracked White-throated Sparrows to their roosts, determined core home ranges, and analyzed the average distances of roost sites to the home range centroids according to these factors. A logistic regression showed that wind, rain, and barometric pressure were both positively correlated with increased distances to centroid, though the extent varied between individuals. While the mean distances to centroid was 2.1 times greater for females than males and 2.4 times greater for white color morphs than tan, a Wilcoxon rank sum exact test did not produce a statistically significant result for either. This study demonstrates that weather conditions influence roost site selection and indicates a strong likelihood that sex and color morph could influence roosting distributions. As such, sex, color morph, and weather may influence habitat usages, and thus indicate new habitats in need of conservation
Collaboration as an Effective Conflict Management Technique for Maximizing Classroom Productivity
The fundamental goal of the classroom is to model behaviour through interaction between students and the tutor. This cannot be achieved in a chaotic environment occasioned clash of interests and other forms of incompatibility. Hence, there is need for effective conflict management techniques applicable to the classroom environment. This research aims to study the role of collaboration as a conflict management technique in bringing about high productivity in the classroom. Using the Choice Theory by Glasser (1965), this work therefore explored the impacts that collaboration as a conflict management technique has within the classroom. The methodology used in this work is mainly the analysis of secondary data from journals and textbooks while also examining some case studies as an empirical basis. Findings revealed that effective conflict management brings about effective learning and cordial relationship. The study recommended, among others, that in order for the purpose of the classroom to be achieved, Peace and Conflict Resolution as an academic discipline should be made a necessary part of teachers’ training curriculum
The Gasoline Octane Problem
The article discusses the gasoline octane problem and explores the assumption that mixing equal amounts of 89 octane and 93 octane gasoline will result in a full tank of 91 octane, which is the rating Mr. Smith\u27s car requires. However, the article proves that this assumption is incorrect and presents a recursive equation that captures the octane rating on successive fill-ups. The article also discusses the solution to the recurrence relation using the Principle of Mathematical Induction. The conclusion is that the recursive sequence has two accumulation points of 91 ± (2/3). The article suggests further investigations, such as exploring the impact of initially filling the tank with 93-octane gasoline and finding a refill marker for the octane game to converge to a single limit point. Characterizing Theta-Emitter Generation for Use in Microdroplet Reactions
Theta emitters are useful for generating microdroplets for rapid-mixing reactions. Theta emitters are glass tips containing an internal septum that separates two channels. When used for mixing, the solutions from each channel are sprayed with mixing occurring during electrospray ionization (ESI) with reaction times on the order of microseconds to milliseconds. Theta emitters of increasing size cause the formation of ESI droplets of increasing size, which require longer times for desolvation and increase droplet lifetimes. Droplets with longer lifetimes provide more time for mixing and allow for increased reaction times prior to desolvation. Because theta emitters are typically produced in-house, there is a need to consistently pull tips with a variety of sizes. Herein, we characterize the effect of pull parameters on the generation of distinct-sized theta emitters using a P-1000 tip puller. Of the examined parameters, the velocity value had the largest impact on the channel diameter. This work also compares the effect of pulling parameters between single-channel and theta capillaries to examine how the internal septum in theta capillaries affects tip pulling. We demonstrate the utility of using theta emitters with different sizes for establishing distinct reaction times. Finally, we offer suggestions on producing theta emitters of various sizes while maintaining high repeatability. Through this work, we provide resources to establish a versatile and inexpensive rapid-mixing system for probing biologically relevant systems and performing rapid derivatization
Effect of pH on In-Electrospray Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange of Carbohydrates and Peptides
Carbohydrates are critical for cellular functions as well as an important class of metabolites. Characterizingcarbohydrate structures is a difficult analytical challenge due to the presence of isomers. In-electrospray hydrogen/deuteriumexchange mass spectrometry (in-ESI HDX-MS) is a method of HDX that samples the solvated structure of carbohydrates during theESI process and requires little to no instrument modification. Traditionally, solution-phase HDX is utilized with proteins to sampleconformational differences, and pH is a critical parameter to monitor and control due to the presence of both acid- and base-catalyzed mechanisms of exchange. For In-ESI HDX, the pH surrounding the analyte changes before and during labeling, which hasthe potential to affect the rate of labeling for analytes. Herein, we alter the pH of spray solutions containing model carbohydrates andpeptides, perform in-ESI HDX-MS, and characterize the deuterium uptake trends. Varying pH results in altered D uptake, thoughthe overall trends differ from the expected bulk-solution trends due to the electrospray process. These findings show the utility ofvarying pH prior to in-ESI HDX-MS for establishing different extents of HDX as well as distinguishing labile functional groups thatare present in different analytes
