Pandering with Worksheets: Graduate Professors’ Pedagogies

    No full text
This exploratory, arts-based study investigates how three tenured professors in a humanities department conceptualize graduate-level teaching and envision their ideal graduate classrooms. Through semi-structured interviews, qualitative coding, and arts-based interpretation, the study identifies three key tensions in their pedagogical thinking: balancing independence and structure, the stigma surrounding “undergraddy” approaches, and valuing long-term intellectual struggle as a means to master threshold concepts. Despite clear visions for ideal pedagogies, professors face significant barriers to implementing them, including time constraints and entrenched norms about what graduate education “ought” to look like. Findings suggest that despite strong pedagogical insight, professors struggle to bridge the gap between ideal and actual practice. The study calls for further research, sustained pedagogical development, and more inclusive, transparent teaching practices that better support the needs of diverse graduate learners by enhancing their self-efficacy and disciplinary enculturation

The Effect of Music on Cognitive Function in Academic Performance Among College Students.

    No full text
Students frequently listen to music during cognitively demanding tasks such as reading, writing, and studying. Research has shown that music can offer therapeutic benefits. For example, Wang et al. (2025) demonstrated the effectiveness of music-centered therapy in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Similarly, Arnaud et al. (2013) found that music has a measurable impact on students’ cognitive performance during study sessions. This pilot study explores how different music genres influence memory retention and cognitive function among college students. Using a survey method, participants (n=16) listened to an assigned genre of music (classical, rock, or Lo-Fi), or a control group of no music, while reading a short essay. They then completed a quiz over the reading designed to assess comprehension and recall. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze differences in test scores across the four groups. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in quiz scores among the four groups, F(3, 12)=4.06, p=.038, suggesting that music genre influenced memory retention and cognitive performance, though further research with a larger sample is needed before generalizations can be made

Effects of Generation Status and Parent Education Level On Impostor Phenomenon in Undergraduate Students

    No full text
Navigating new environments and experiences opens people up to unrelenting self-doubt. The jump from high school to unexplored college territory is a particularly hazardous time for this manifestation. Undergraduate students are notorious for self-doubt and questioning. This self-doubt is known as the impostor phenomenon. The impostor phenomenon, colloquially known as impostor syndrome, is when an otherwise successful person feels like a fraud. A non-probability convenience sampling of 148 students was collected through a survey. The survey included the Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale and was distributed to students to determine if there is a difference in impostor phenomenon among first-generation, continuing-generation, or legacy students. This study also analyzes any difference in impostor phenomenon scores with parent education levels, among other variables. There was no relationship between impostor phenomenon and parent education level or generation status found. It was found that women have significantly higher impostor phenomenon scores than men. The findings from this study may provide valuable insights for assisting students during the difficult transition from high school to college

    Communication Principles and Practices

    No full text
Communication Principles is designed to summarize the foundations of communication that can be put into practice immediately both in the classroom and in real life. In fact, most people in the business world acknowledge the value of communication, regardless of career path or profession. As Artificial Intelligence appears to be eliminating jobs, many experts continue to acknowledge that human skills, such as those promoted in a basic communication course, are irreplaceable. This book provides an overarching approach to communication that includes some theory behind the skills, so that the why (theory) continues to drive the what (skills) in a cohesive manner. The order of this textbook is unique in that it addresses public presentations in the first half, so that students can begin presenting early in a semester. The second half of the book addresses other communication contexts, beginning with the intrapersonal context and the intercultural context. The interpersonal context is layered onto the intrapersonal and intercultural backgrounds, followed by the small group context, where intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intercultural contexts intersect with greater complexity because of the number of people in groups. And finally we address conflict and reparation, which can happen in any context. Mediated communication is addressed specifically in the intrapersonal chapter, while also appearing where appropriate in the other contexts
