Development of an Online Course in Research for Undergraduate Students
Get PDFThis Work in Progress paper will cover the development of an online course in research practices for undergraduate students. Active participation in research is an important part of experiential learning, which can help to prepare students for careers in a variety of settings including industrial R&D departments, academia, and government research labs. Undergraduate students’ research experiences may be limited in their value, however, by the learning curve students face as they begin to conduct research. The quality of their training may also be limited, with some receiving excellent training and orientation from a strong research lab or faculty mentor, and others receiving little guidance. In order to better prepare undergraduate students for research, faculty members in different departments at Kettering University, a midwestern STEM-focused institution, received an internal grant to develop a class in research for undergraduates. This class, which is designed to be offered online either for cohorts or for individual students as an independent study, contains information and resources on a diverse range of issues such as motivation for research, research ethics, planning a research project, conducting literature searches, experimental procedures, keeping lab documentation for various types of projects, data analysis, technical writing, intellectual property, and issues relevant to scoping out one’s own research project. This paper will give the background for the course development, evaluation of the required content and decisions on structure and format, and describe the various modules in the course. It will also describe the future plans for deployment, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the course, and suggest ways in which it could benefit a wide range of undergraduate students in different disciplines
Queueing Models with MAP Arrivals Useful in Service Sectors
Get PDFQueueing models have found applications in many fields, notably in service sectors. In this paper, we study queueing models that have significant applications in service sectors. We look at multi-server systems with MAP arrivals. We assume phase type services for single server systems and exponential services when dealing with multi-server systems. All arriving customers finding no idle server will not wait in the system to receive services but rather leave their information in a registry list. These customers will be reached out on a first-come-first-served basis (FCFS) by an idle server soon after completing its current service. The reach out time is assumed to be exponential and at the end of this time, with a certain probability the reached out customer is available for service; with complementary probability the customer is not reachable due to various reasons including the customer not picking up the call from the service system to receive a service. In the case when the reach out is unsuccessful, the server will remain idle should there be no customer in the registry list. However, if there is at least one customer in the registry, then the server will start another reach out. The classical approach using matrix-analytic methods is employed and discuss a few illustrative examples that bring out the qualitative nature of the models in steady-state. When dealing with MAP/G/c queues we resort to simulation and present a few examples. Some concluding remarks including a few extensions to the models studied here are presented
