Side Impact Testing of the Near-Side, Rear Seat Occupant Using a Deceleration Sled
A near-side, rear seat side impact component test, was conducted and validated utilizing a SIDIIs anthropomorphic test device (ATD). The test fixture consisted of the rear seat structure, side door, interior trim, and side airbag curtain module. Test parameters were determined from full scale tests including impact speed, angle of impact, and depth of door intrusion. A comparative assessment was conducted between the full scale test and the deceleration sled test including ATD contact with the vehicle interior, contact duration, sequential timing of ATD contact, and dummy injury measures. Validation was achieved so that the deceleration sled test procedure could be utilized for further evaluations
Adding Lean to a Traditional SCM Course Through Hybrid Course Design
Teaching SCM using lean as well as traditional methods is in demand by students and their employers. Teaching lean and traditional coursework in one term is a challenge. Also, lean is best learned by student-active exercises that reinforce lean principles but consume a lot of class time. This presentation outlines an approach taken using a hybrid course structure to contrast lean with traditional techniques including the use of several student-active exercises in one term. The hybrid structure uses video lecture to move some coursework “outside class” to make time for “inside class” hands-on exercises including two versions of The Beer Game, a lean materials handling exercise, VSM for SCM, and the ERPsim Logistics Simulation. The approach and lessons learned from two terms of course instruction are presented

Increasing Biogas Production from Sewage Sludge Anaerobic Co-digestion Process by Adding Crude Glycerol from Biodiesel Industry
In an effort to convert waste streams to energy in a green process, glycerol from biodiesel manufacturing has been used to increase the gas production and methane content of biogas within a mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion process using primary sewage sludge. Glycerol was systematically added to the primary digester from 0% to 60% of the organic loading rate (OLR). The optimum glycerol loading range was from 25% to 60% OLR. This resulted in an 82–280% improvement in specific gas production. Following the feeding schedule described, the digesters remained balanced and healthy until inhibition was achieved at 70% glycerol OLR. This suggests that high glycerol loadings are possible if slow additions are upheld in order to allow the bacterial community to adjust properly. Waste water treatment plant operators with anaerobic digesters can use the data to increase loadings and boost biogas production to enhance energy conversion. This process provides a safe, environmentally friendly method to convert a typical waste stream to an energy stream of biogas
