Wastewater treatment by means of advanced oxidation processes based on cavitation – A Review

    No full text
Hydrodynamic and acoustic cavitation combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including, among others, the Fenton process, is a promising alternative to the technologies of wastewater treatment technologies in use today. The present review discusses processes based on cavitation combined with AOPs and evaluates their effectiveness in oxidation of organic contaminants. Complete degradation of, among others, p-nitrotoluene, p-aminophenol, 1,4-dioxane, alachlor, chloroform, trichloroethylene, sodium pentachlorophenate and carbon tetrachloride was achieved by using hydrodynamic cavitation or acoustic cavitation alone. Cavitation is also an effective method of disinfection of water. Complete oxidation of hardly degradable organic contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, insecticides, phenol and its derivatives was observed when using hybrid processes: hydrodynamic or acoustic cavitation combined with the Fenton process, ozonation, hydrogen peroxide, UV irradiation, catalysts and persulfates. The review also discusses the cavitational reactors used in the wastewater treatment and the effect of process parameters (including pH, temperature, concentration and kind of contaminants) on the effectiveness of oxidation. The oxidation effectiveness for individual treatment methods is compared and their advantages and limitations discussed. The analysis of economics of the treatment processes performed to evaluate the possibility of scaling up reveals that the only economical processes should be based on hydrodynamic cavitation (mainly due to low cost of reactors and low consumption of electrical energy compared with ultrasonic reactors)

Stop Sign and Stop Line Detection and Distance Calculation for Autonomous Vehicle Control

    No full text
Environmental perception plays a crucial role in autonomous driving vehicle speed control. Autonomous vehicles must follow the traffic rules indicated in traffic sings. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for detection of stop sign and calculating the distance, which is an essential parameter in controlling the longitudinal velocity of an autonomous vehicle. As the vehicle moves closer to the stop sign, the stop sign falls out of the field of view of the camera, making it tough to bring the vehicle to stop at the desired distance from the sign. Hence, information on the position of stop line is essential to know where exactly to stop the vehicle. Stop sign detection is carried out using AdaBoost cascade classification based on three different feature types- Haar-like features, Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The performance results of all the three classifiers are analyzed and compared to determine which one performs the best. To find the stop line a classic computer vision algorithm is proposed. The distance to stop sign and stop line is estimated in real time so that a decelerating torque can be applied accordingly to slow down the vehicle and eventually bring it to a complete standstill

Batch Sizing in Sustainable Production Systems with Imperfect Quality

    Get PDF
In classic Economic Production Quantity (EPQ), an optimal batch size is determined to minimize total production cost including setup and inventory holding costs, and defective parts are not allowed. In this paper an imperfect EPQ system is studied to minimize the overall cost, where setup cost, scarp rate, batch size, and electrical power demand are determined by the model. In this imperfect production system, a percentage of the batch is defective in each cycle, which will be reworked at an extra charge. In addition, the model considers electrical power demand charge which accounts for a large percentage of industrial utility bills. This framework also determines the optimal level of investment on system design and flexibility which in turn, is a function of setup cost, electrical power requirement (power demand), and scrap rate. The proposed constrained cost minimization problem is formulated as a nonlinear mathematical model, and is solved using a posynomial Geometric Programming (GP) approach to present a closed form solution for the batch size, setup cost, allowable defective rate and power requirements. The model is illustrated through a numerical example and some sensitivity analysis is performed
