When Helping Hurts: An Ideographic Critique of Faith-Based Organizations in International Aid and Development
Using ideographic critique as a subset of rhetorical analysis, this paper critically examines the efficacy and ethicality of American Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in international aid and development. Through tracking case studies both domestically and abroad, this thesis evaluates the very real impacts that development efforts imprint on vulnerable populations by exploring questions of coercion and constitutive rhetoric. This thesis begins by providing a robust overview of ideographs and constitutive rhetoric as defined by scholars McGee, Cloud, Conduit, Luciates, and Charland then pairs this methodology with coded data taken from a sample group of some of the most prominent FBOs in the world. Highlighting ideographs like “development,” “stewardship,” and “family values” I follow three distinct narratives to trace the root cause of structural violence enacted against the LQBTQIA community in Uganda and negative side effects of unexamined “voluntourism.” My findings build on recent mentalities in development literature (referencing cycles of dependency and neo-colonialism), trace the identity creation of the Religious Right in American politics, document the rapid rise of state-funded FBOs, and deconstruct the rhetorical myth that “Homosexuality is un-African.” Ultimately, I argue that the terms “FBO,” “Religious Right,” and “Christian” have become ideographs unbeknownst to the American public. As a result of this, these groups which ironically possess the best intentions to “help” and “save” others have inadvertently done more harm than good by adopting damning rhetoric
Courtesy: The Space Between Souls
This paper presents an illustrative dissection of the virtuous power of courtesy. The content, herein, examines the mutual space between individual souls created through courtesy, utilizing Robert Sardello’s (2003) definition of “courtesy” as a virtue. True acts of courtesy surpass commonly understood actions and niceties, in which the purpose is to invite one’s soul into a mutual space of acknowledgment with the soul of another. It is only out of this recognition that the soul remembers its common and worldly origin. Ego processing dictates so much of our daily interactions that the presence of soul connection is most certainly never brought to the forefront of our awareness. Courtesy, which leads to connected moments of existence, can most likely be achieved by ignoring categorization of appearance, as well as maintaining a perception of soul-being. Those who act with virtuous courtesy are lead blindly by the heart, quieting the commentary of the mind. Acts of virtuous courtesy can be seen in the profession of hospice care, as a unifying theme in Star Wars, as well as in the prominent work of Mother Theresa. As the nature of the individual soul cannot be expressed in solitude, the relationship between client and therapist most closely represents the process of creating a shared space for one’s soul to enunciate its existence
The Phenomenon of Belonging
A central problem facing humanity is that we have forgotten our sense of belonging. We no longer feel like we belong to ourselves, each other, and the world in deep and meaningful ways. Modern culture has uprooted the heart felt bonds of authentic connection and replaced them with false experiences of belonging through the addictive qualities of materialism, narcissism, and rationalism. As a result we suffer from our lost experiences of soul, spirit, and the aliveness of the world. In this article, we will explore belonging as the process of growth, forever pushing away the old and pulling towards new ways of being. The qualities of belonging explored herein reveal a heroic journey of remembrance from the innocence of being in childhood to the wounds of betrayal, alienation, and growth. This narrative exploration guides us from disillusionment and isolation to a remembering of what more authentic belonging feels like and how we are called to it as a homecoming to ourselves
Jesuit-Infused Online Training to Work with Military Couples & Families:
In this paper we will detail the online certificate in Counseling Military Families (CMF) offered at Regis University, along with its relevance to the Jesuit mission and the service ethos of the military. Additionally, we explain how the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm is infused within the certificate courses. Lastly, the hope of providing a much-needed opportunity to prepare students to be effectually therapeutic with service members and their families, in a way that is accessible to all, is shared

First Do No Harm: Caution Against the Promises of Whole Genome Sequencing in Medicine
Sequencing whole genomes is quickly extending its influence beyond scientific research into medicine. The purpose of this thesis is to connect the use of a novel sequencing technology in genetics research to the use of similar technologies to create an individualized disease risk assessment via whole genome sequencing. The goal of the research presented here is to directly assess the differences in genetic structure of the La Suerte, Costa Rica mantled howler monkey (A. palliata) groups between the forest edge and interior using microsatellite analysis. The rapid sequencing platform, Oxford Nanopore MinION, provided preliminary sequencing results to assess the inbreeding levels of mantled howler groups at the forest edge versus the interior of the fragmented forest. This research will be compiled with previous studies on howler monkey response to forest fragmentation to determine what extent howler populations are affected by human infringement and habitat fragmentation. While the sequencing results could not be used to discern genotype, sequencing platforms are increasingly being used to detect deleterious gene mutations linked to disease. Considering both the positives and negatives behind knowing genetic disease risk, I turn my attention from sequencing technologies of non-human DNA sequences to the application of advanced platforms to sequence whole human genomes. With the established genetic link to disease, whole genetic sequences are now easily analyzed for specific mutations. Knowing that genetic risk can present potentially like altering information, there are challenges that physicians, medical ethicists, and society must address in the coming era of personalized medicine

Opioid Awareness Shaping Lives: One Mind, One Heart, One Pill at a Time
Problem: Across the board recognition to decrease the inappropriate, misuse and abuse of opioids has gained real momentum for the past decade. This multifaceted problem is complex, requiring battles to be waged on all fronts. A critical realm in confronting this issue requires solid and effective education for nursing professionals which can then be imparted to patients and caregivers. The PICO for this capstone is: P: Nursing Staff Registered Nurses, I: Pre-test, Didactic, Simulation, Post-test, 30-day Post-test, C: Pre/Post/Post-test current practice knowledge, additional comparison of Naloxone (Narcan) current practice utilization 30 days Pre and Post Implementation and O: Evaluate increased and retained opioid knowledge, skill competency and Naloxone utilization Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase nursing staff opioid knowledge, strengthen clinical skill competency, raise multi-modal therapy awareness and reduce Naloxone utilization. Goal: The goal of this study is to initiate and standardize yearly nursing staff education, prioritize non-opioid therapies as first-line treatment, decrease inappropriate opioid use and minimize the need for Naloxone. Objectives: This study includes the following objectives: to increase nursing staff opioid education, clinical skill competency, demonstrate knowledge of non-opioid palliative anesthetic techniques and inpatient Naloxone reduction by 50-100%. Plan: Using a quasi-experimental quantitative design, the study’s succession is as follows: 1.) Pretest, 2.) Didactic education, 3.) Enactment of a progressive group simulation scenario, 4.) Post-test and debriefing and 5.) 30-day Post-test initiated for knowledge retention. Additionally, simulation skills were observed by analyzing domains of Noticing, Interpreting, Responding and Action. Inpatient Naloxone utilization reduction was analyzed 30 days pre and post implementation. Outcomes and Results: The results indicate a statistically significant difference in pre-test to post-test and 30-day post-test scores after a combined didactic and simulation session. Results from the post to 30-day post-test were not found to be statistically significant indicating possible knowledge retention post didactic and simulation intervention. While the Naloxone results were not statistically significant, positive data indicators direct the need for continued evaluation noting utilizing the acute pain service consistently may impact inappropriate opioid administration, reduce length of stay and reduce patient transfers to a higher level of care. The simulation observation domains indicated that block techniques from didactic education resulted in learning. Dual intervention, didactic and simulation, provided an evidence-based method to enhance opioid knowledge. Initiating standardized and frequent opioid education is imperative so that nursing professionals provide excellent patient care and contribute to optimal health outcomes with thoughts every pill given wholeheartedly matters
